Nitish will be CM if NDA wins elections, says JD(U)

Patna: Amid fresh speculation over the NDA's chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming assembly elections, the JD(U) on Saturday reiterated that Nitish Kumar would be the alliance's nominee. The party cited the BJP's past statements affirming that the leader who spearheads the campaign would ultimately take the top post. The renewed debate followed an interview given by Union home minister Amit Shah to an English daily. When asked who would be the NDA's CM candidate, Shah said on Friday, "Only time will decide who will be the Bihar CM. But what is clear is that we will fight this election with Nitish as chief minister." Reacting to the comment, JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, "All NDA constituents, including their state presidents and Amit Shahji, have clearly said that the election would be fought under Nitish's leadership. So, naturally, he will be the CM if the people give him the mandate. The public also desires this." He dismissed suggestions of ambiguity, saying that even PM Narendra Modi has invoked Lalu Prasad's 'jungle raj' while affirming Nitish's leadership. "Even the 2020 elections were fought under Nitish and he became CM," Neeraj Kumar added. Highlighting the NDA's unified stance, Kumar said, "The alliance has adopted the slogan '2025, Phir Se Nitish.' When this is the message on posters and in slogans, Shah's statement must be understood in that context." However, leader of the opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav took a swipe at JD(U), saying that Nitish's authority had diminished to such an extent that ticket distribution would now be done by Shah.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The hike will benefit over 1.9 crore beneficiaries, who will begin receiving the revised amount from next month. Announcing the decision via social media, CM Nitish Kumar emphasised the importance of ensuring a dignified life for the elderly, describing them as a "precious part of society". He added that the enhanced pension amount would be credited directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts by the 10th of every month. "I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all elderly citizens, disabled people and widowed women will now receive Rs 1,100 per month instead of Rs 400. The revised amount will be disbursed from July and will be credited to accounts by the 10th of each month. This will benefit 1,09,69,255 people," Kumar wrote in his post. The opposition RJD was quick to respond, accusing the govt of mimicking its policies. "The govt is adopting our announcements out of fear of our imminent return to power," said leader of opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. "I announced a hike in the social security pension to Rs 1,500 at a press conference on Dec 6 last year. Now the NDA govt has been compelled to follow suit." The JD(U) defended the move as a continuation of the govt's development agenda. "This hike reflects Nitish Kumar's commitment to 'development with justice'," a party spokesperson said, advising Tejashwi to focus on serving the poor rather than criticising the govt. Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary hailed the decision as historic and thanked the CM for addressing the needs of vulnerable people.

BJP-JD(U) ruined Bihar's economy and social fabric in last 20 years: Congress

Patna: Congress on Saturday slammed the BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar over 'ruining' the state's economy and social fabric in the last 20 years of their rule. 'The BJP-JD(U) alliance has ruined Bihar's economy, governance, and social fabric during their 20-year rule. This has been clearly proven by the reports of the reputed global institutions. That's why we've launched a campaign to expose how Bihar has suffered under Nitish Kumar's leadership,' said Congress spokesperson Prem Chand Mishra while addressing a press conference in Patna. As part of the campaign, Mishra cited a recent report by CARE Ratings, a global agency, which ranked Bihar last among 17 large Indian states on key development indicators. 'Bihar received just 34.8 points in the Social and Economic Development Index, scoring the lowest across parameters such as education, health, infrastructure, fiscal management, and economic activity,' Mishra said. Based on the CARE Ratings Report, Mishra pointed out that Bihar ranks 17th out of 17 major states on social and economic development. He said that poor performance in education quality, maternal and infant mortality rates, employment generation, weak scores on women empowerment, infrastructure, per capita income, alarming fiscal indicators, including debt management, interest payment ratio, fiscal deficit, severe deficiencies in electricity access, railway density, healthcare services, and school teacher ratios. He also said that the weak judicial efficiency, e-governance, investment environment, and environmental metrics are also poor, including air quality and renewable energy adoption. 'Bihar is now behind even Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh — states it once competed with. The figures speak for themselves, and corruption and poor governance are to blame,' Mishra said. He alleged that the government's much-publicised development narrative is hollow and lacks substance on the ground. Mishra added that even the Union government data contradicts the NDA's claims of progress. 'Bihar is in deep crisis, socially, economically, and administratively. The only way out is a change in government and a policy revolution,' he concluded. This marks a major strategic move by the Congress to build a data-backed campaign against the NDA ahead of the Assembly elections. With just four months to go, the party appears poised to corner the ruling alliance on its development record, particularly using central and global institutional reports as ammunition.
