BJP-JD(U) ruined Bihar's economy and social fabric in last 20 years: Congress

Patna: Congress on Saturday slammed the BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar over 'ruining' the state's economy and social fabric in the last 20 years of their rule.
'The BJP-JD(U) alliance has ruined Bihar's economy, governance, and social fabric during their 20-year rule. This has been clearly proven by the reports of the reputed global institutions. That's why we've launched a campaign to expose how Bihar has suffered under Nitish Kumar's leadership,' said Congress spokesperson Prem Chand Mishra while addressing a press conference in Patna.
As part of the campaign, Mishra cited a recent report by CARE Ratings, a global agency, which ranked Bihar last among 17 large Indian states on key development indicators.
'Bihar received just 34.8 points in the Social and Economic Development Index, scoring the lowest across parameters such as education, health, infrastructure, fiscal management, and economic activity,' Mishra said.
Based on the CARE Ratings Report, Mishra pointed out that Bihar ranks 17th out of 17 major states on social and economic development.
He said that poor performance in education quality, maternal and infant mortality rates, employment generation, weak scores on women empowerment, infrastructure, per capita income, alarming fiscal indicators, including debt management, interest payment ratio, fiscal deficit, severe deficiencies in electricity access, railway density, healthcare services, and school teacher ratios.
He also said that the weak judicial efficiency, e-governance, investment environment, and environmental metrics are also poor, including air quality and renewable energy adoption.
'Bihar is now behind even Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh — states it once competed with. The figures speak for themselves, and corruption and poor governance are to blame,' Mishra said.
He alleged that the government's much-publicised development narrative is hollow and lacks substance on the ground.
Mishra added that even the Union government data contradicts the NDA's claims of progress.
'Bihar is in deep crisis, socially, economically, and administratively. The only way out is a change in government and a policy revolution,' he concluded.
This marks a major strategic move by the Congress to build a data-backed campaign against the NDA ahead of the Assembly elections.
With just four months to go, the party appears poised to corner the ruling alliance on its development record, particularly using central and global institutional reports as ammunition.

Kochi: Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI), Kerala region, sought immediate govt assistance to address a severe crisis affecting the livelihoods of 1.4 million people in the state, following environmental difficulties and export-related challenges. SEAI Kerala president, Premachandra Bhat, said Kerala has declined from its position as the leading seafood exporter to fifth place, primarily due to environmental impacts. The state's 590km coastline and nine coastal districts have seen fishing days reduced from 300 to 100 annually. This reduction is attributed to poor weather, fishing restrictions and the current 52-day trawling ban until July 31. The situation worsens as foreign factory vessels from China and Taiwan continue illegal fishing during restricted periods, diminishing local marine resources. "We urgently need stronger coastal surveillance and regulatory enforcement. While our fishermen face strict restrictions, foreign vessels continue to plunder our seas unchecked," Bhat said. He emphasised the critical need for increased domestic production. "Shrimp is the crown jewel of our exports. But without adequate raw material, even the most advanced processing facility becomes nothing more than a silent warehouse," he warned, advocating for govt support in commercial aquaculture and sustainable shrimp farming. Bhat identified the implementation of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) in trawl nets as a crucial priority, essential for marine conservation and maintaining access to environmentally conscious markets like the United States. "We have the technology. We have the necessary approvals. What we now need is administrative will—an urgent push to implement TEDs without further delay," he said. Global challenges, including transport disruptions, the Russia-Ukraine war, Middle East tensions and shipping route instability, are pressuring Indian seafood exporters to maintain competitiveness against China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ecuador. Kerala's industry continues to advance through initiatives like the Plastic-Free Seas Project, where fishermen collect marine plastic waste for proper disposal. "This is a model for the nation. It proves that sustainable practices and profitability can go hand in hand," Bhat added. Women constitute 80% of Kerala's fish processing workforce, operating in over 850 peeling sheds and 100 processing units. Highlighting the sector's significance as a women-oriented industry in Kerala, SEAI said there is a need for year-round employment. The association requested improved access to working capital loans for raw material procurement during peak seasons and continuous processing in lean periods. "When you support this industry, you are not just protecting exports—you are empowering thousands of women and securing countless family incomes," he said, adding that the govt should utilise Kerala's NRI-supported banking system to provide targeted assistance for fish processing facilities.

Delhi CM performs yoga on riverbank, says govt.'s efforts to clean Yamuna visible

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta performed yoga on the banks of the Yamuna river on Saturday, the annual International Yoga Day, accompanied by Cabinet colleague Kapil Mishra, North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, senior officials, and several schoolchildren. Speaking to mediapersons after the event in Sonia Vihar, the CM said she had chosen the spot to show the public that the river was cleaner now as her government has been continuously working to make it pollution-free. 'Message for public' 'Decentralising sewage treatment plants (STPs), laying new sewer lines and water pipelines… whatever is needed to clean the river, we are consistently doing it. By performing yoga here, we want to give a message to the people of Delhi that Yamuna is getting cleaner,' she said. Cleaning the Yamuna was one of the poll promises the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly election. Ms. Gupta said a total of 303 drainage projects, with an estimated cost of ₹8,000 crore, are under way. 'These include redevelopment of major drains, installation of modern water pumps, desilting drains, expansion of stormwater drainage system and scientific drainage network management,' she said. Ms. Gupta said that the Yamuna had been Delhi's identity, as the city was established along the banks of the river. 'We are working sincerely to clean the river. This [Sonia Vihar] stretch of the river is clean. We will clean the remaining stretches also,' she said. She said that thousands of tonnes of water hyacinth had been removed from the river using advanced technology. 'A cruise service is also being planned on Yamuna,' she added. Hitting out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress governments, the CM said, 'Over the years, the city has seen many governments, but they did nothing for Maa Yamuna.' Ms. Gupta said yoga should not be treated as a one-day event, and people should incorporate it into their daily routine. She added that it was due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership that yoga today is being celebrated globally. 'Be it the promotion of millet, reducing oil consumption or advocating yoga, PM Modi has consistently encouraged citizens towards a healthy life,' she added. West Bengal BJP worker found dead

KOLKATA A BJP worker, Sheikh Bakibulla, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his home in Goghat in Hooghly district on Saturday, sparking political tensions in the area. The BJP has alleged that the death was not a suicide but a 'political murder'. The police have sent the body for a post-mortem and initiated a probe. 'In this specific case at Goghat police station, an FIR has been lodged against unknown persons under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (murder),' a high-ranking official of the West Bengal police told The Hindu. Sheikh Abdullah, father of the deceased, said his son had earlier been associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). 'He was assaulted multiple times in the past,' he said.
