Rapper Kendrick Lamar lands the biggest wins at the 2025 BET Awards

Kendrick Lamar was the top winner at the BET Awards on Monday night, an awards ceremony honouring black actors, singers and sports stars.
The 30 For 30 rapper won the best male hip-hop artist award, best album of the year and the video of the year award for Not Like Us.
Lamar and filmmaker Dave Free also took home the video director of the year award at the event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast on the BET cable channel.
"BET has always made sure they're representing the culture right and always put me in the midst of the cycle of what we represent," Lamar said on stage when accepting his award.
Host comedian Kevin Hart opened the ceremony by recognising the BET Awards' 25th anniversary and all of the "history that has been made" on the stage.
The ceremony traversed the evolution of black music, starting with a performance by R&B artist Ashanti that featured a compilation of songs, including her 2002 song Foolish.
Additional performances included other 2000s songs Ballin ' by Mustard, 1 Thing by Amerie and Like You by Bow Wow.
Hart led with jokes while also highlighting the BET Ultimate Icon Award winners of the night, including Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg.
The special award was given to those that have paid homage to music, entertainment, advocacy and community impact.
Presented by Stevie Wonder, Foxx accepted his award and reflected on his recovery journey after having a stroke in 2023.
"I have to be honest, when I saw the in memoriam, I was, 'Man, that could have been me;," he said.
Another honour included the best female hip-hop artist award for rising rapper Doechii.
"(US President Donald) Trump is using military forces to stop protest," Doechii said in her acceptance speech, addressing the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles where the national guard and marines are being deployed.
She said: "I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us."

In a complaint filed Friday, June 13, Dixon alleges that Perry created 'a coercive, sexually exploitative dynamic' with Dixon while they worked on 'The Oval,' a BET drama series produced by Perry. Dixon has sued Perry for quid pro quo, sexual harassment, workplace sexual harassment, and sexual assault and battery, among other claims. He is seeking $260 million in damages and a jury trial. Representatives for Dixon pointed to the lawsuit when reached for comment. In the complaint, Dixon accused Perry of 'initially promising him career advancement and creative opportunities, such as producing his pilot and casting him in his show, only to subject him to escalating sexual harassment, assault and battery, and professional retaliation when Dixon did not reciprocate Perry's unwanted advances,' according to the lawsuit. But Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.' In the 46-page lawsuit, Dixon alleges that he met Perry in September 2019 while working for an event company in Atlanta organizing a party for Perry's studio. Over the next few months, Perry allegedly texted Dixon about helping him find a job and change his life. He was offered a role as the character Dale in Perry's show 'Ruthless' in November 2019, according to the lawsuit. The two continued to exchange messages throughout the winter, the suit says. In January 2020, months after Dixon took on the 'Ruthless' role, Dixon was invited to Perry's home in Georgia, where Perry allegedly sexually assaulted Dixon. After the incident, Dixon ignored Perry's messages until Perry offered him a series regular role on 'The Oval,' according to the suit. 'Dixon was intrigued, hoping this would be the big break he was looking for and a chance to showcase his acting talent.,' the complaint said. In March 2020, while reading a script about his character in 'The Oval,' Dixon realized his character's fate was left uncertain, the lawsuit says. Dixon then believed that Perry would make the character die if Dixon 'ignored Perry or failed to engage with the sexual innuendos,' the suit said. The sexual harassment, according to the lawsuit, continued into 2021 with Perry allegedly sending Dixon photos of Dixon's body from the set of 'The Oval' with sexually suggestive comments. In June of that year, Dixon alleges, Perry invited him to his home to discuss a show that Dixon wanted to produce. He accused Perry of sexually assaulting him at that meeting. In 2023, the lawsuit said, Dixon told Perry that he was moving away from Atlanta to California to put distance between them. Dixon's lawsuit said he gave up a full payment of almost $400,000 when he left 'The Oval' in its final season. According to the complaint, Dixon 'continued to put up with' Perry's advances due to fear for his career. The complaint also alleges that Dixon visited a doctor who told him he had suffered insomnia, stomach issues and levels of stress. He was supplied Zoloft to deal with the stress, according to the lawsuit.

Kendrick Lamar performs ‘Not Like Us' in Toronto, crowd responds

Kendrick Lamar has been on his Grand National Tour with SZA. His most recent stop was in Toronto, Canada. The overly publicised feud between Kendrick and Drake reached a fever pitch when Lamar took to the stage at the Rogers Centre and let loose with a selection of his records aimed at Drake. These included Like That by Future which Lamar features on. That particular record sparked the exchange between two of the best rappers out. Lamar also did Euphoria and the monster hit, Not Like Us. He performed for two nights in Toronto, which is also known as The 6. Pundits debated whether he would be able to perform in his rival's hometown, but not only did he do that, but he played to a sold-out audience. Lamar left the crowd wanting more, right after he performed Not Like Us. This record is considered to have sealed Lamar's victory in the battle. That song houses lyrics that frame Drake in a dim light, inferring that he is a deviant. Drake is still at legal loggerheads with Universal Music Group (UMG) over their promotion of that track. The lawsuit filed in January of this year, alleges that UMG defamed Drake by amplifying Not Like Us, which includes accusations against him and his associates. UMG has filed motions to have this ongoing matter dismissed. Regardless, Lamar basked in the moment at centre stage as the chant of 'one more time' rang around the arena after he played the controversial global hit. The Compton native did not oblige and instead moved on with his set. Everything Lamar did in the battle was very purposeful and calculated. This was no different with his visit to Canada. Lamar played at a venue that Drake has not even performed at yet, which must sting. Drake has of course played at some major venues in Canada but not at the Rogers Centre. Also having SZA on the GNX tour and performing in Canada could be a sore spot for Drake. At one stage he and SZA seemed to be friendly, and the R&B sensation has even appeared in a Drake music video for the song Rich Baby Daddy as well as an appearance in the lyrical visualiser for Slime You Out. Adding insult to further injury, Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada's NDP party, was spotted in the audience. Drake called him out on social media to which Singh responded and claimed to have only been at the show to see SZA and nobody else. Singh even posted an apology on his social media, stating that Drake and his OVO collective have done so much for Canada and that it was insensitive for him to have gone to this concert. The event went off without much incident as tensions were expected to be high. Some of Drake's most loyal fans did attempt a protest outside the venue, but to no avail, as the show went ahead as planned and uninterrupted. Drake has been working on a new solo album following the Valentine's Day release of his third joint or collaborative album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U with Partynextdoor. It would be hard to conceive a reality where the Canadian superstar lets this moment go by unanswered but given that he is widely considered to have lost the lyrical skirmish with Lamar, it might be better to simply move on.
