Indore Metro rolls out smoothly, thanks to IIT-Bombay's intervention

MUMBAI: Indore celebrated a new chapter in urban commute on May 31 with PM Narendra Modi inaugurating a 6-km Metro line from Gandhi Nagar station to Super Corridor Station-3, but behind the smooth run of its first ride lies a quiet intervention from IIT-Bombay.
Rewind to 2022. The concrete was not set right. Initial pile foundation tests failed. Worry lines deepened. That's when Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) knocked on the doors of IIT-B, where steel met science.
"They reached out in Jan 2022 when MPMRCL authorities faced a problem with the initial pile foundation design and construction," recalled Prof Deepankar Choudhury, chair professor and former head of civil engineering at IIT-B.

, travelled to Indore with his then PhD students, Chaidul Chaudhuri and Vansittee Dilli Rao. What they found was sobering: In many piles, the concrete hadn't flowed fully to the bottom, with a shortfall in lengths. Gaps as large as two metres stared back, posing a serious risk to the entire metro superstructure.
"Anything built over such uncertainty was a hazard," Choudhury said. "We proposed supplementary piles and redesigned the pile cap with detailed finite element analysis, considering customised location-specific ground conditions," Choudhury explained. The compromised piles were repurposed as auxiliary supports, their strength recalibrated by a new configuration. That is the mind beneath Indore's Metro.
These findings were recently published in a leading journal of the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Journal of Geomechanics, by Choudhury and his former PhD scholars of IIT-B.

QS Rankings 2026: The QS World University Rankings, released on Thursday featured the best performing institutions around the world. A total of 54 Indian institutions made it to the QS Global Rankings with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi as the best performing Indian institution. The Sustainability Score evaluates how well an institution contributes to areas such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, student well-being, transparency, and ethical decision-making. Here are the top 10 Indian institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2026 with their sustainability scores: The best performing Indian institute is the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi with an overall rank of 123 among the top institutions around the world. IIT, Delhi earned a sustainability score of 79.9. The second Indian institution is the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) with an overall 129 rank. IIT, Bombay earned a sustainability score of 75.2. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) with an overall 180th position, earned a sustainability score of 73. IIT-Kanpur set to host 58th convocation on June 23, RBI guv Sanjay Malhotra to be chief guest

Lucknow: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is set to host its 58th convocation ceremony on Monday to celebrate the academic achievements of its graduating students as they begin a new phase of their journey. The momentous occasion will be graced by RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra, an IIT-Kanpur alumnus, as the chief guest. The chairperson, Board of Governors (BoG), IIT- Kanpur, and Prof. Manindra Agrawal, director, IIT-K, will preside over the ceremony. Malhotra completed his bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from IIT-K in 1989. He began his career as a bureaucrat in 2000 and held key roles across various ministries in Rajasthan and at the national level, including international experience with UNIDO. He served as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power and also served as the Chairman and MD of REC. In December 2024, he was appointed Governor of the RBI.
