Metro free ride ends with over 1.5L ridership, now avail discount on fares

Indore: Indore Metro's seven-day 'joyride' officially concluded on Saturday, with Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) reporting an impressive ridership of nearly 1.5 lakh people. They experienced the new mode of transport for free during its inaugural week. The joyride had commenced on June 1 on approximately 6 km-long Super Priority Corridor'. While the first week offered free travel, MPMRCL has announced a promotional discount scheme for the subsequent weeks. In the second week, commuters will receive a 75% discount on ticket fares. This will be followed by a 50% discount in the third week and a 25% discount in the fourth week. Currently, Indore Metro operates across five stations. The minimum fare for travelling between two stations is Rs 20, while the maximum fare for travelling up to five stations is Rs 30. With the promotional discounts, the minimum ticket (Rs 20) will be available for just Rs 5 per person during the second week, and the Rs 30 ticket for longer journeys will cost Rs 8 per person. MPMRCL PRO Himanshu Grover said manual ticketing will continue at Indore Metro stations. This is due to ongoing scrutiny of a Turkish company, which has been assigned the contract for Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system for both Indore and Bhopal Metros, regarding any potential links to anti-Indian activities. A decision regarding shifting to automated ticketing will be taken once this scrutiny is complete.

Indore Metro rolls out smoothly, thanks to IIT-Bombay's intervention

File Photo MUMBAI: Indore celebrated a new chapter in urban commute on May 31 with PM Narendra Modi inaugurating a 6-km Metro line from Gandhi Nagar station to Super Corridor Station-3, but behind the smooth run of its first ride lies a quiet intervention from IIT-Bombay. Rewind to 2022. The concrete was not set right. Initial pile foundation tests failed. Worry lines deepened. That's when Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) knocked on the doors of IIT-B, where steel met science. "They reached out in Jan 2022 when MPMRCL authorities faced a problem with the initial pile foundation design and construction," recalled Prof Deepankar Choudhury, chair professor and former head of civil engineering at IIT-B. Choudhury, who also shaped the foundation strategy for India's longest sea bridge Atal Setu , travelled to Indore with his then PhD students, Chaidul Chaudhuri and Vansittee Dilli Rao. What they found was sobering: In many piles, the concrete hadn't flowed fully to the bottom, with a shortfall in lengths. Gaps as large as two metres stared back, posing a serious risk to the entire metro superstructure. "Anything built over such uncertainty was a hazard," Choudhury said. "We proposed supplementary piles and redesigned the pile cap with detailed finite element analysis, considering customised location-specific ground conditions," Choudhury explained. The compromised piles were repurposed as auxiliary supports, their strength recalibrated by a new configuration. That is the mind beneath Indore's Metro. These findings were recently published in a leading journal of the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Journal of Geomechanics, by Choudhury and his former PhD scholars of IIT-B. 1240 trees to be removed for Regal to airport metro

Indore: As the city celebrated , Indore once again witnessed the loss of its green cover to make way for a major development project. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL), following permission from Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), started felling 1,240 trees to construct the route along with stations between Regal Square and Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now MPMRCL officials approached the IMC for permission to cut or transplant the trees. In a site inspection conducted by the IMC Horticulture Department, 1,240 trees were identified as hindering the metro project. Based on the report, permission was granted to cut 228 trees and transplant 1,012 trees. Tree cutting work has started in front of Indore airport, where an underground station of Indore Metro is proposed. The list of affected species is extensive and includes common varieties like Ashok, Badam, Gulmohar, Mango, Neem, Peepal and various Ficus species. Among the affected trees are many old and even some fruit-bearing trees that are at least 20 years of age or more. In accordance with the provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Preservation of Trees (Urban Areas) Act 2001-02, MPMRCL deposited a compensatory afforestation amount of Rs 12.40 lakh into the IMC Treasury via RTGS. This payment serves as compensation for the trees being removed or transplanted, senior officials said. "We will ensure scientific transplantation of affected trees, including avoiding unnecessary trimming, proper site selection and further care of the same," IMC additional commissioner Abhay Rajhangaokar said, adding that MPMRCL has been instructed to undertake double compensatory plantation against the loss of trees.

Indore Metro issues guidelines, penalties for safe & efficient travel

Indore: As Indore embraces its new era of urban transport with the recently launched Metro, MPMRCL has issued a comprehensive set of "Dos and Don'ts" to ensure a smooth, safe, and respectful experience for all passengers. Additionally, the guidelines include a list of 'violations' that can lead to penalties and even imprisonment. Adherence to these guidelines, which have also been posted at every station of the Indore Metro, is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and pristine condition of the city's latest public transit system, senior officials said. The offences and penalties that MPMRCL has identified include drunkenness, causing a nuisance, spitting, sitting on the floor of the train, quarrelling, taking offensive materials, defacing metro properties, and unauthorized sale of tickets. For each of these violations, the authority has fixed a penalty of Rs 200. Additionally, there is a penalty of Rs 400 for the unauthorized sale of articles on the metro railway. Travelling without a ticket or pass will make the passenger liable for an excess charge of Rs 50 and the maximum fare of the system. According to the guidelines, demonstrating of any kind upon the railway, writing, pasting in compartments or carriages, or refusal to be removed can result in exclusion from attending demonstrations, removal from compartments or carriages, or a fine of Rs 500. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo There is a penalty of Rs 5,000, along with removal from the train, if caught travelling on the roof of the train.
