IIT-Kanpur set to host 58th convocation on June 23, RBI guv Sanjay Malhotra to be chief guest

Lucknow: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is set to host its 58th convocation ceremony on Monday to celebrate the academic achievements of its graduating students as they begin a new phase of their journey.
The momentous occasion will be graced by RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra, an IIT-Kanpur alumnus, as the chief guest. The chairperson, Board of Governors (BoG), IIT- Kanpur, and Prof. Manindra Agrawal, director, IIT-K, will preside over the ceremony.
Malhotra completed his bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from IIT-K in 1989. He began his career as a bureaucrat in 2000 and held key roles across various ministries in Rajasthan and at the national level, including international experience with UNIDO.
He served as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power and also served as the Chairman and MD of REC. In December 2024, he was appointed Governor of the RBI.
The convocation ceremony for 2,848 students graduating this year (subject to the approval of the BOG meeting, to be held on June 22, 2025) will be held in two sessions, with the first session being conducted in the main auditorium of IIT-K, which has a capacity of 1250, awarding the high achievers.

The second session will be the conferring of degrees by the individual departments to the students across the different Lecture Halls led by the chairperson of the Senate Post-Graduate Committee (SPGC) and the Chairperson of the Senate Under-Graduate Committee (SUGC). The ceremony is being held in two sessions to ensure that all the graduating students can participate in this celebration of their academic accomplishments.
The graduating students include 269 PhD recipients, 29 from MTech-PhD (Joint Degree), 2 from MDes-PhD (Joint Degree), 2 MS (by Research)-PhD (Joint Degree), 480 MTech recipients, 874 BTech and 204 BS recipients. The ceremony will also see 194 students from MSc (2-year), 145 from MBA, 20 from MDes, 83 from MS (by Research), 40 from PGPEX-VLFM, 26 from Double Major, 93 from Dual Degree, 26 from MS-PD (MS part of the Dual Degree), and 361 from the eMasters degree programs, subject to the approval of BOG meeting, to be held on June 22, 2025.
This diverse cohort of graduates reflects IITK's wide-ranging academic programs and its dedication to promoting a multidisciplinary learning environment.
In keeping with the flexibility that the institute's academic programme offers, 90 students are graduating with two minors, 192 students are graduating with one minor, and 30 graduate students are graduating with three minors.

While IIT-Kharagpur and JU improved their rank, CU's position saw a dip. The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position."At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. With limited resources, my aim is to develop the university holistically, focusing on research and international network."

QS Rankings 2026: The QS World University Rankings, released on Thursday featured the best performing institutions around the world. A total of 54 Indian institutions made it to the QS Global Rankings with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi as the best performing Indian institution. The Sustainability Score evaluates how well an institution contributes to areas such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, student well-being, transparency, and ethical decision-making. Here are the top 10 Indian institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2026 with their sustainability scores: The best performing Indian institute is the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi with an overall rank of 123 among the top institutions around the world. IIT, Delhi earned a sustainability score of 79.9. The second Indian institution is the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) with an overall 129 rank. IIT, Bombay earned a sustainability score of 75.2. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) with an overall 180th position, earned a sustainability score of 73. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) secured the 215th position overall, earning a sustainability score of 77.8. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore acquired 219 rank among the top institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2025 with a sustainability score of 66.3. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) secured an overall rank of 222, earning a sustainability score of 74.7. University of Delhi got an overall rank of 328 and a sustainability score of 71.2. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) achieved the lowest sustainability score of 43 among the top 10 Indian institutions in QS World University Rankings 2026, with an overall rank of 334. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) with an overall rank of 339 earned a sustainability score of 57.5. Anna University, Chennai at 465th rank achieved a sustainability score of 64.5. Banks must act with social commitment, says MP

MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Saturday said banks should not simply chase profits but also operate with a strong sense of social responsibility. Presiding over the District-Level Advisory and Progress Review Committee meeting in Madikeri, Mr. Yaduveer called upon banks to extend lending support to farmers, small and medium enterprises, traders, and cottage industries. 'Inclusive development is the need of the hour, and banks must play an important role in ensuring it,' he said. He urged banks to strictly adhere to Central government guidelines and provide greater assistance to priority sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and fisheries. 'Banks should function as partners in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of inclusive and sustainable development,' Mr. Yaduveer said. Stressing on the importance of language and communication, he said staff of nationalised banks should learn Kannada to connect better with local communities. 'It not only helps in addressing grievances efficiently but also strengthens public trust,' he added. RBI Assistant General Manager Suraj said that an online Kannada learning initiative for bank employees has already been launched. Presenting the overview of bank performance in the district during 2024-25, Lead Bank Manager Gangadhar Nayak said banks achieved 99% of the agricultural loan disbursement target, 97% in small-scale industries, 100% in educational loans, 74% in the housing sector, 104% in other priority sectors, 98% overall in the priority sector, and 117% in non-priority sector lending. The Annual District Credit Plan target for the year 2025–26 has been pegged at ₹7,680.10 crore. Sector-wise allocations include ₹3,477.86 crore for crop loans, ₹1,388.42 crore for small and medium industries, ₹33.27 crore for educational loans, ₹59.46 crore for the housing sector, and ₹115.53 crore for other priority sectors — totalling ₹5,074.54 crore for all priority sectors. A sum of ₹2,606.56 crore has been earmarked for non-priority sectors, he said. Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Anand Prakash Meena, Additional Deputy Commissioner R. Aishwarya, and officials from various departments and corporations attended the meeting.
