Andre Onana risks missing derby in potential seven-game Ruben Amorim headache
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to miss a number of matches next season should he link up with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations as anticipated
Andre Onana could potentially miss up to seven matches for Manchester United next season, assuming manager Ruben Amorim continues to back the goalkeeper. The Cameroonian has had a career marred by errors at Old Trafford since his £47million transfer from Inter Milan in 2023.
Despite several blunders last season against the likes of Lyon, Leicester and Brighton, he remained the club's first-choice keeper. However, his position is one that Amorim may look to strengthen this summer.
Whether he keeps his place remains to be seen, but the 29-year-old is set for a potentially extended absence regardless due to Cameroon's participation in the Africa Cup of Nations later this year. The tournament has been moved forward from its usual slot.
Taking place in Morocco, it will now run from December 21 to January 18. This means that Onana could miss as many as seven United matches if his nation make it to the final, with a clearer picture painted by 2025/26 Premier League fixtures being released on Wednesday.
The games he risks missing include clashes with Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Wolves, Leeds United, Burnley and Manchester City, as well as an FA Cup third round match scheduled among the league fixtures.
Onana will only miss the Manchester derby if Cameroon do go all the way. There's also a chance he could play against Villa on December 20, given that Cameroon's first group match against Gabon isn't until Christmas Eve, followed by games against Ivory Coast and Mozambique.
That would mean he'd have to join his international team-mates late, mirroring the controversy from two years ago when he missed the opening match of the 2023 tournament due to a late arrival at the national camp.
Onana played against Tottenham Hotspur just a day before their first group game against Guinea, drawing criticism from Togo legend Emmanuel Adebayor, who accused the goalkeeper of disrespecting his country.
"He did not respect Cameroon," said the former Arsenal and Spurs striker. "I was a player like him, and even being the most important player in my selection, I never acted in this way.
"The fact that this situation is happening shows that there is a problem, perhaps even within the federation. He risks losing big, because he has alienated the Cameroonian supporters, as well as many African supporters and undoubtedly certain members of the team."
Altay Bayindir could be in line for a run in the first team if Amorim decides his goalkeeping situation is satisfactory, with the Turkish keeper having played 10 games across all competitions last season. According to the Athletic, Onana is set to stay at Old Trafford, although that doesn't guarantee he'll still be No. 1.

Antonio Conte makes statement about Man Utd transfer he did not expect
Napoli boss Antonio Conte has revealed he was surprised that one Manchester United transfer was completed last summer with the Italian not expecting the deal to go ahead Antonio Conte has revealed he was surprised Napoli were able to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United last summer. The Scotland international helped inspire a Serie A title win in his first season at the club as he played a pivotal role in the success. United accepted a £25.4million bid for McTominay as they parted ways with the academy product in August 2024, much to ex-Chelsea boss Conte's delight. Then Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag blamed profit and sustainability rules for the sale of the midfielder, admitting he had mixed feelings about the deal. But while McTominay had struggled to secure a position in the Dutchman's starting XI consistently, he quickly proved his worth to Conte. The 27-year-old deliverd 12 goals and six assists in 34 appearances during his debut season in Italy, including six goals in the final seven matches as Napoli earned the title over Inter Milan on the final day of the season. And Conte was surprised to have McTominay at his disposal at all. Despite being told by club chiefs that his signature could be secured, the Italian thought Napoli's lack of European football could be problematic. But the 55-year-old knew the player was underutilised at Old Trafford. Conte was more than happy to take advantage of the opportunity. "Scott is a player whom I knew really well. He was born and raised at Manchester United," Conte told Sky Sport Italia. "I could see that he always made an impact when he played, but at the same time, I noticed he wasn't used as a key player at Manchester United. "He was hardly a starter. Honestly, we had talked about it with [Napoli director] Giovanni Manna. He told me it was a possible solution. "Sometimes, directors make up stories also to keep you calm. If you ask me: 'Have you ever thought McTominay would surely arrive?' I'd say no. "Don't forget we were heading into a season without European trophies to play for, so he had to leave Manchester United to start over with us." Conte was left with a single frustration, McTominay's signing happened too close to the end of the window. 'A bit late, but he arrived and I was very happy because Manna was good at signing him,' Conte said. 'We had discussed McTominay, but I didn't think he would really join us.' Revealed: Florian Wirtz's first words to Liverpool fans - as £116m record signing declares bold ambitions and reveals why the Reds were the club for him
Liverpool 's new superstar Florian Wirtz has declared his ambition to 'win everything, every year' after making his blockbuster switch from Bayer Leverkusen. The German golden boy says he is already feeling the love from Reds fans following his £100million move - which could rise to a British transfer record of £116m. Wirtz has penned a five-year deal at Anfield after a month-long soap opera which saw him reject the esteemed company of Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid. He will be expected to hit the ground running after Liverpool shelled out a club-record fee to sign him. Wirtz said: 'I would like to win everything, every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. 'In the end, we want to be successful. Last season, Liverpool won the Premier League, so my goal is to win it again and also go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Liverpool Football Club (@liverpoolfc) Liverpool's new superstar Florian Wirtz says he aims to 'win everything, every year' 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and join the Premier League.' In a video on Instagram, the 22-year-old added: 'What would I say? I would say, thank you for the support, of course, I also saw it on Instagram or everywhere else that they are wanting me to come. 'I would say thank you for the support and I'm really looking forward to playing in front of them and achieving big things together. 'So yeah, I'm really happy to come and sorry for the long wait.' After a relatively reserved few transfer windows, Liverpool fans have been left slack-jawed by what looks to be an almost perfect transfer window so far. Arne Slot had already signed Wirtz's former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m. Witrtz and Frimpong were crucial to Leverkusen's invincible domestic double in 2023-24 under Xabi Alonso and were recently on holiday together. Frimpong arrives as an attack-mided replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who Liverpool got £10m for from Real Madrid just a month before his contract ended. The Reds are also set to sign Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez for £40m. Meanwhile, Giorgi Mamardashvili will take his place as Alisson's sidekick after leaving Valencia for £29m - as arranged last summer - while Caiomhin Kelleher has been shipped to Brentford for a healthy £18m. Slot's vision appealed to Wirtz and the Dutchman plans to deploy him as an attacking midfielder. It is believed that in games when Liverpool are dominating, they foresee Wirtz floating all over the attack. They will have to balance the books with sales but their summer business may continue after with them still having designs on a No 9 and defender.

John Obi Mikel blasts 'stupid' Chelsea star who may have to consider transfer
John Obi Mikel tore into Nicolas Jackon after his 'stupid' red card in the Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo, telling the Chelsea striker to leave if he cannot handle competition for his place in the team. The Blues suffered a 3-1 defeat in Philadelphia on Friday night, taking the lead in the first-half through Pedro Neto but conceded three times in the second period. Flamengo scored twice in the space of three minutes midway through the second-half, wrestling control of the game from the Premier League side. Liam Delap was handed his first starting appearance for the club since his £30million arrival from Ipswich but was replaced after 64 minutes, in between the first two Flamengo goals. Jackson was brought onto replace him but in first meaningful contribution four minutes after coming off the bench, he was shown a straight red card for a wild lunge on Ayrton Lucas. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The incident drew parrels with one from the Premier League in May. The Senegal international was shown a straight red card 36 minutes into a vital match against Newcastle United in a similarly wild act of petulance, earning himself a suspension that carries over into the new season. Mikel, who has previously questioned Jackson's reliability in front of goal, told DAZN: 'Unbelievable, a stupid, stupid stupid, mistake you can make. I don't know what is going through his head. 'You come into the game with your side 2-1 down. Your team needs you and he does that. He did that in the league game against Newcastle, a very important game which we needed to get into the Champions League and he got a red card. Now he is has done it again. You can't keep making these mistakes.' Asked if Jackson's decision stemmed from frustration with not starting the game, Mikel said: 'I don't care what his frustration is, it is a massive football club. It is about competition. 'If you're angry, if you're pissed off that Delap has come onto the club and he's going to be the competition with you, you have to embrace it if you are a big player. Because the only way we win trophies is if the competition is there.' Jackson has been Chelsea's first choice striker for the last two seasons but Delap's arrival could change that. Mikel warned if the former Villarreal star cannot handle the pressure that comes with added competition, then he should move on. More Trending 'Nicolas Jackson needs to have a word with himself on where he sees his Chelsea career going on from here,' Mikel continued. 'The manager has brought in a striker in Delap. If the manager starts to doubt you, thinking 'do I still trust this guy' and he keeps making mistakes and letting the club down, he will think do I stick with the player I brought into the football club in Delap. So the manager has a decision to make because you can't keep putting him in and letting the team down. If he doesn't trust him then it is time for Delap to start the games. 'He [Jackson] wants to be the only guy, playing every game. No, we need healthy competition to win trophies moving forward, challenging for titles. And if he is not ready for it then he should not be at Chelsea football club.' MORE: Liverpool sign Florian Wirtz – will 'future Ballon d'Or winner' be worth every penny?
