Andre Onana offered Man Utd escape route as 'transfer negotiations begin'

Manchester United spent big to dump David de Gea and make Andre Onana their No.1 when signing him from Inter Milan two years ago at the behest of Erik ten Hag - but it's been a bumpy ride for the Cameroon stopper since moving to Old Trafford Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could be handed an Old Trafford exit by French side Monaco - if he wants one. Onana has been United's undisputed No.1 since arriving from Inter Milan in a £44million in 2023. The ex-Ajax stopper joined at the behest of then-boss Erik ten Hag, who unceremoniously dumped long-time first choice David de Gea, having concluded that the Spaniard's style didn't fit what he wanted. ‌ It's been a difficult ride for the Cameroonian since, with a number of high-profile errors during United's two most disappointing Premier League campaigns in the league's history. And there are suggestions that Ruben Amorim and the club's hierarchy could cut their losses on Onana this summer. ‌ Aston Villa's Emi Martinez has been heavily linked with a move to United, amid suggestions that a £40m move could be in the offing for the Argentina international. Ironically Martinez was sent off at Old Trafford on the final day of last season, as Villa missed out on Champions League football. But to bring in a new No.1, United have to shift Onana out. He has no interest in being second choice and, frankly, is on too big a contract to be left in limbo. So United need to cut a deal for him first. And according to Sky in Italy, they're doing just that. It's claimed Monaco are opening negotiations with United to see if a deal can be done to take him to the Ligue 1 club this summer. Onana, 29, has made 101 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils since his arrival. One player who snubbed a move this summer is club captain Bruno Fernandes, who revealed this week how United boss Amorim played a key role in his decision to snub a mega money offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal. The move would have trebled his current £300,000-a-week salary. "The president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask about the possibility of me moving there," said Fernandes. "I had to wait a while to think about the future. As I've always said, I would be willing to do it if United thought it was best to move on. I spoke with the coach, Ruben Amorim, who really tried to talk me out of it. ‌ " Manchester United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could, but they didn't need the money. From my side, it was a very ambitious proposal, the president was a fantastic person. I never talked about the money, it ended up coming up later, with my agent. "I had to make the decision as a family and understand what I wanted for my future. That was the question my wife asked, what my professional goals would be. At no point did she say yes or no, she always supported me and put my professional side first. ‌ "It was an easy move, even at a family level. I had Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo. My children are used to playing with theirs. But I simply want to stay at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, because I still feel capable of that. "I want to continue to be happy and do what I love most. I'm still very passionate about this sport. It's my way of seeing football and I'm happy with my decision." WAFCON: D-17: Cameroon, the Eternal Outsider

Published: Wednesday, 18 June 2025 The countdown continues as we edge closer to the CAF TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2024. In the build-up to the 13th edition of this iconic tournament, looks back at the defining moments of the competition. Today's spotlight is on Cameroon, one of the historical cornerstones of the Women's AFCON. Finalists in 2004, and 2014 and 2016, the Indomitable Lionesses have consistently made their mark on the biggest stages, blending power, passion, and commitment. Just 17 days to go until the 2024 CAF TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations. A major force in African women's football, Cameroon will be conspicuously absent this year. It's a shocking omission for a team that has reached the final three times (2004, 2014, and 2016). Cameroon's history in the Women's AFCON is marked by epic battles, often against Nigeria, their long-time nemesis. In 2004, in Johannesburg, they reached the final but fell to the Super Falcons in a heavy 5-0 defeat. But the deepest scar remains 2016. On home soil, in a packed Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Cameroon pushed Nigeria to the edge. But in the 84th minute, Desire Oparanozie struck the decisive blow, breaking Yaoundé's heart and delivering a new title to Nigeria. 'We'll never forget that match. We gave everything for our fans,' recalls Christine Manie, then team captain. Today, a new generation is rising, led by talents like Naomi Eto and Monique Ngock, determined to write their own story. With experienced pillars such as Ajara Nchout Njoya and Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné providing guidance, the Cameroonian team is eager to bounce back. 'The future belongs to those who keep believing,' says Mireille Tchengang. They may have missed the 2024 tournament, but the promise of a stronger comeback remains unshaken. One thing is certain: the Lionesses will roar again.

Andre Onana risks missing derby in potential seven-game Ruben Amorim headache

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to miss a number of matches next season should he link up with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations as anticipated Andre Onana could potentially miss up to seven matches for Manchester United next season, assuming manager Ruben Amorim continues to back the goalkeeper. The Cameroonian has had a career marred by errors at Old Trafford since his £47million transfer from Inter Milan in 2023. Despite several blunders last season against the likes of Lyon, Leicester and Brighton, he remained the club's first-choice keeper. However, his position is one that Amorim may look to strengthen this summer. ‌ Whether he keeps his place remains to be seen, but the 29-year-old is set for a potentially extended absence regardless due to Cameroon's participation in the Africa Cup of Nations later this year. The tournament has been moved forward from its usual slot. ‌ Taking place in Morocco, it will now run from December 21 to January 18. This means that Onana could miss as many as seven United matches if his nation make it to the final, with a clearer picture painted by 2025/26 Premier League fixtures being released on Wednesday. The games he risks missing include clashes with Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Wolves, Leeds United, Burnley and Manchester City, as well as an FA Cup third round match scheduled among the league fixtures. Onana will only miss the Manchester derby if Cameroon do go all the way. There's also a chance he could play against Villa on December 20, given that Cameroon's first group match against Gabon isn't until Christmas Eve, followed by games against Ivory Coast and Mozambique. That would mean he'd have to join his international team-mates late, mirroring the controversy from two years ago when he missed the opening match of the 2023 tournament due to a late arrival at the national camp. Onana played against Tottenham Hotspur just a day before their first group game against Guinea, drawing criticism from Togo legend Emmanuel Adebayor, who accused the goalkeeper of disrespecting his country. ‌ "He did not respect Cameroon," said the former Arsenal and Spurs striker. "I was a player like him, and even being the most important player in my selection, I never acted in this way. "The fact that this situation is happening shows that there is a problem, perhaps even within the federation. He risks losing big, because he has alienated the Cameroonian supporters, as well as many African supporters and undoubtedly certain members of the team." Altay Bayindir could be in line for a run in the first team if Amorim decides his goalkeeping situation is satisfactory, with the Turkish keeper having played 10 games across all competitions last season. According to the Athletic, Onana is set to stay at Old Trafford, although that doesn't guarantee he'll still be No. 1.
