'Most Villa fans would pick any other ground - but Emery breaks hoodoos'
Back-to-back Champions League qualifications would be pivotal in maintaining the momentum of the Unai Emery revolution at Aston Villa.
It would not only further cement the club's footballing status at the top table but also provide a vital financial boost - especially amid ongoing wage pressures and broader fiscal challenges.
In the bigger picture, Villa simply cannot afford to fall short. Already Tottenham, one of the two clubs they are aiming to displace in the so-called 'Big Six' has sneaked into the Champions League via the Europa League final.
Falling behind them now risks more than lost prestige - it could mean losing key players and missing out on top transfer targets needed to strengthen this summer.
And for a final-day decider? Most Villa supporters would pick any ground but Old Trafford, which has been the 'Theatre of Nightmares' over the past seven decades.
Since 1955, Villa have won just three times - in 1983, 2009 and 2021.
Still, Unai Emery is no stranger to breaking hoodoos. He delivered Villa's only home win over Manchester United this century - and now has the chance to complete a rare managerial double.
To do that, the players need to summon the mindset and composure that deserted them in recent semi-finals - games where they were favourites, but faltered.
If they can rise to the occasion and finish on 69 points - one more than their fourth-placed finish last season - even if other results do not fall their way, it still marks tangible progress.
To the players and the manager: one last push. On the club's 150th anniversary, securing consecutive Champion League qualifications would provide a great foundation for a potential new legacy period in the club's history.

Manchester United explore Mount sale with Premier League rival linked
Manchester United have explored the potential sale of Mason Mount this summer with the club trying to 'establish whether there is a market' for the midfielder. Mount has endured an injury-hit time at Manchester United since arriving from Chelsea in a £55m deal in 2023. A succession of fitness issues and the presence of Bruno Fernandes has prevented Mount from making the expected impact at Old Trafford. He made just eight starts in the Premier League last season and has not been capped by England since the 2022 World Cup. Advertisement The club's former scout, Mick Brown, has revealed that the Red Devils have explored the sale of Mount this summer. Speaking to the Inside Track podcast, he said United are open to letting Mount move on this summer amid interest from Aston Villa. 'United have tried to establish whether there is a market for Mason Mount,' he said. 'Aston Villa have been spoken about and I think they could make a move. 'People remember Mason Mount at his best, that's what Villa want to help him get back to and it looks like he's back to full fitness now. 'Villa want to strengthen because they've lost (Marcus) Rashford and (Marco) Asensio, so Mount is on their list. Unai Emery is a fan of his and feels he could help him to rediscover his Chelsea form. Advertisement 'It would be an excellent move for Mount as well, because Villa are a top club, they've got top facilities and they'll be playing in Europe.' John Stones committed to Manchester City: ‘I want to stay here, I love it'
John Stones has committed his future to Manchester City after admitting he questioned whether there was a way back from some 'dark days' during an injury-ravaged season. The England international defender is into his tenth season at Manchester City but foot and hamstring injuries plagued him last season. Advertisement It limited him to only 13 starts in all competitions and the influx of new defenders in the last two transfer windows led to speculation as to whether he could be allowed to leave before his contract expires next summer. 'I'm here, I want to stay here, I love it,' Stones said. 'I'm here to help the team. I don't know what's been said or speculated, but I hope that kind of shuts it down.' Stones made several comebacks last season but each time his body broke down. The last time he made an appearance was in February when he started the second-leg of the Champions League play-off match against Real Madrid but only lasted eight minutes before going down again. 'There's been points where you think, you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life, and football, I give everything, on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and those are the dark days,' he said. 'I think everyone's been through them and think, 'Why is this happening?'. You wish it would go a different path, but like I said, it's self-doubt, there's a lot of things 'All of us have been through different upbringings and challenges through life and what did we do within those situations, was it fight or was it give up? I was a fighter from a young age, in difficult moments, you have to look at the bigger picture and realise what are your morals, what you believe in, and fight to make it worthwhile.' Stones turned 31 last month and is now one of the most senior players with 277 appearances for the club. He is an experienced international player but he found the difficulty of diagnosing and treating his injury problems mentally challenging. 'I don't know what the reason was and we've sat with the medical staff, sports science, to try and figure out why,' he said. 'Some things can't be explained, which is even more testing mentally when there's not really an answer. Advertisement 'I've been unlucky with some of the injuries that I've had, they were very rare last season, after speaking to specialists. Sometimes I think, why has it happened to me? But I've got to deal with that and move forward and try to adapt with how my body's adapting. 'I think we all self-doubt as players and feel things and we want to get back as quick as possible. 'Maybe that's a downfall sometimes that you try to push too soon. Definitely family, I think that's my biggest thing, being around them and having their support. You can feel very lonely at times when you're training by yourself and that's the difficult part of it, being in a team sport, not training with the team when you run out of the pitch in your rehab. 'So a lot of things that you've got to get used to and deal with and try and set yourself goals to come back and it's been a challenge. I am over that hurdle.' City have signed Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, adding to a central defensive group that includes Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake. Some players and managers have complained about the expanded Club World Cup adding more games to an already packed calendar but Stones is viewing it as an opportunity to re-assert himself. 'I feel great, I'm back fit, ready to help the team when called upon. I think this season I've got to look more detailed into training, things that I can do off the pitch that I can sustain playing a lot more games. 'It's difficult when you're injured, you almost work longer and more, so from that aspect I know the guys mentally and physically have had such a long season. 'I suppose mentally for me it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process, but now I've put that behind me and used this as a mini introduction back into before the new season and another trophy for us to hopefully win and get some game time.'

Marcus Rashford keen on linking up with Lamine Yamal at Barcelona
The dream destination for Marcus Rashford after his exit from Manchester United appears to be Barcelona after he declared an interest in playing alongside Lamine Yamal. An interview with Spanish YouTuber Javi Ruiz revealed something of the 27-year-old's thoughts on his future. Asked if he would like to be teammates with Lamine Yamal, Rashford said: 'Yes, for sure. Everyone wants to play with the best. Hopefully … we'll see.' Barcelona's sporting director Deco told Catalan radio station RAC1 in May that the club 'like' Rashford. Advertisement Rashford, whose own breakthrough at United came as an 18-year-old, with four goals in two games against Denmark's FC Midtjylland and then Arsenal in February 2016, said 'It's difficult to put into words what [Yamal] is doing because he's not supposed to be doing that at 16 or 17. I don't think we've seen that before.' United are looking to sell Rashford, frozen out by Ruben Amorim and loaned to Aston Villa in January, to fund further summer transfer business beyond the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha. Alejandro Garnacho is another on open sale. For Rashford, contracted until 2027, having stated his time at United is at its end, the asking price is understood to be £40m. Despite a productive spell at Villa, including a throwback performance in the club's Champions League near-miss against eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain, he is unlikely to return to Unai Emery's club, who have profit and sustainability concerns (PSR), after missing out on a return to the Champions League. 'Spain is nice, and it's not too far from home,' Rashford told Ruiz. Barcelona have made a wide forward a priority, with Liverpool's Luis Díaz also linked. 'As wingers we only have Lamine and Raphinha, because Ferran [Torres] is becoming more and more a striker,' Deco said. The No 1 target is the Athletic winger Nico Williams, 22, for whom a buyout clause is set at €58m (£49.7m), and Barça are willing to pay it. That would unite Spain's star wingers from their Euro 2024 triumph in the Catalan capital, a move that broke down last year when Williams decided to stay in the Basque Country. Personal terms are reported to be agreed, but Barça's own, precarious PSR position may delay that deal until July. Deco said: 'The fact that Nico and Lamine are friends is good. But this is not a club of friends. We come here to work and try to win. Then, if they get along well, all the better.'
