Ex Atalanta & Juventus Defender Reveals: ‘I Was Close To Joining Inter Milan & AC Milan'
Former Atalanta defender Merih Demiral has revealed that he was close to joining Inter Milan and AC Milan from La Dea.
The Turkish international recalled that he nearly transferred to one of the two clubs speaking to Gianlucadimarzio.com.
Merih Demiral spent a few years playing in Serie A.
The Turk played for Sassuolo, where his performances earned him a move to Juventus.
Demiral never quite nailed down a starting spot for himself at the Bianconeri, however. Therefore, he ended up heading to Atalanta.
And it was in Bergamo that Demiral really became a top-rated defender in Serie A.
Demiral thrived playing in the centre of a back three under Gian Piero Gasperini. His physicality allowed him to defend large spaces and patrol the penalty area.
But behind the scenes, Merih Demiral fell out with Atalanta coach Gasperini.
Therefore, the Turk left to join Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2023. He was one of a number of big names from Europe, and Serie A in particular, to head to Saudi Arabia.
However, there was no lack of interest in Demiral's interest in Europe.
And in particular in Serie A, there were clubs who wanted to sign Demiral on the basis of his form for Atalanta.
Demiral revealed that 'I was close to Milan, and also to Inter.'
'But nothing came of it. Because Atalanta preferred not to sell me.'
Meanwhile, Demiral wasn't ruling out a return to Serie A. 'Let's see what happens,' said the 27-year-old. 'In football you never know what will happen.'
Demiral said that 'I learned a lot' playing in Serie A.
'It was very important for my career.'
'I still follow the league,' Demiral said. 'Particularly because my compatriots Calhanoglu and Yildiz are playing there.'

However, there has not been an offer to Inter yet. At least officially. Rather, reports indicate that Galatasaray have been in direct contact with Calhanoglu and his representatives. The Istanbul giants could aim to convince the former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder on the move initially. Then approach Inter formally. Ex Marseille Star Squanders Opportunity To Impress In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win
Ex Marseille Star Squanders Opportunity To Impress In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win Luis Henrique failed to take advantage of a chance to make his mark in Inter Milan's 2-1 Club World Cup win over Urawa Red Diamonds. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that there was no end product from the Brazilian. Advertisement Luis Henrique made his first start for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds yesterday. The Brazilian had just signed for Inter a couple weeks ago. And Henrique had already shown flashes of his quality with his substitute appearance against Monterrey a few days ago. Therefore, Luis Henrique was certainly one of the main players to watch in the Inter starting eleven against Urawa Reds. Luis Henrique Fails To Impress For Inter Vs Urawa Red Diamonds Welcome Inter Milan Luis Henrique Article Image In the view of the Gazzetta dello Sport, however, Luis Henrique looked very much below par. The Brazilian did look to use his pace and technical ability from time to time. Advertisement However, Henrique generally would size up his defender and go sideways. He was unable to really cause any panic in the Urawa Reds defense with any of the dribbles he attempted. In wide areas, the Brazilian had little effect on the match. Then around the penalty area, very little that Henrique attempted came off. There is no doubt that Luis Henrique is a player with quality. However, that failed to materialize into anything tangible yesterday.

Old Reliable – Netherlands Star Hailed For Solid Display In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win
Old Reliable – Netherlands Star Hailed For Solid Display In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win Stefan de Vrij has won praise for a solid display at the back for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds yesterday. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, hail the ever reliable Dutchman for his composure and control of his penalty area. Advertisement Stefan de Vrij started for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds. The 33-year-old took the place of Francesco Acerbi in the starting eleven from Inter's first Club World Cup group stage match against Monterrey. It was not necessarily the kind of match in which de Vrij typically thrives. The former Lazio and Feyenoord defender is a very physical player with plenty of experience. Therefore, his comfort zone tends to be marking equally physical centre-forwards. And Urawa Reds played without a real out-and-out striker for much of the match. Instead, quick winger Yatsuke Matsuo played up front for the Japanese team. (Photo by) De Vrij didn't have too much of a problem adjusting to what Urawa Reds threw at him, though. Advertisement The 33-year-old safeguarded the Inter penalty area well. He was not really at fault for the Urawa Reds opening goal. And de Vrij's anticipation meant that he was always a step ahead of the Urawa Reds forwards to the ball. Therefore, there was virtually no real danger from the Japanese team except for on their goal.
