Old Reliable – Netherlands Star Hailed For Solid Display In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win

Stefan de Vrij started for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds. The 33-year-old took the place of Francesco Acerbi in the starting eleven from Inter's first Club World Cup group stage match against Monterrey.
It was not necessarily the kind of match in which de Vrij typically thrives.
The former Lazio and Feyenoord defender is a very physical player with plenty of experience. Therefore, his comfort zone tends to be marking equally physical centre-forwards.
And Urawa Reds played without a real out-and-out striker for much of the match. Instead, quick winger Yatsuke Matsuo played up front for the Japanese team.

De Vrij didn't have too much of a problem adjusting to what Urawa Reds threw at him, though.

The 33-year-old safeguarded the Inter penalty area well. He was not really at fault for the Urawa Reds opening goal.
And de Vrij's anticipation meant that he was always a step ahead of the Urawa Reds forwards to the ball.
Therefore, there was virtually no real danger from the Japanese team except for on their goal.

Italy Star Praises Inter Milan FIFA Club World Cup Hero: ‘Hope He Stays With Us'
Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni says that he's hoping Valentin Carboni stays at the Nerazzurri. The 26-year-old spoke to InterTV after yesterday's win over Urawa Red Diamonds, via FCInterNews. Carboni was the scorer of the dramatic late winner in the Club World Cup clash. Advertisement Valentin Carboni was not the likeliest hero for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Argentine is only just coming back from an ACL tear that has kept him out since October. But it was Carboni who Inter coach Cristian Chivu turned to late in the Nerazzurri's Club World Cup match against Urawa Red Diamonds. When Chivu threw the 20-year-old on off the bench, Inter were trailing 0-1 in the Club World Cup group stage clash. However, Lautaro Martinez was able to find the equalizer for Inter. From then on, it looked as though the Nerazzurri would be settling for a point. However, it was Carboni who found himself with the ball at his feet inside the penalty area in stoppage time. And the Argentine showed great technique and composure to tuck the ball into the far corner. Alessandro Bastoni: 'Hope Valentin Carboni Stays At Inter Milan' SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 21: Valentin Carboni #45 of FC Internazionale Milano celebrates after scoring his team's second goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group E match between FC Internazionale Milano and Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field on June 21, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by) Now the big question is whether Carboni will stay at Inter or leave on another loan this summer. Advertisement Nerazzurri defender Alessandro Bastoni called Carboni 'a great player.' 'He's already shown that. Then unfortunately last season he got an injury that stopped his growth a bit.' 'But he has unique characteristics that we don't have in the squad,' Bastoni said of the Argentine. 'We hope that he can use this Club World Cup as a platform to stay with us.' Then, Bastoni commented on Inter's last Club World Cup group stage match. Watch Inter Milan vs River Plate for FREE with DAZN on any device! 'Our minimum objective is to get our of the group,' said the 26-year-old. 'Because we didn't come here on vacation. We really want to do well after a really difficult end to the season.' 'Between Inter and the national there were some bad defeats,' Bastoni admitted. 'But I repeat: we're here to fight. And we really want to get to the next round.'
