JOHOR BARU: Johor has spent RM1mil to develop a smart queueing system that reduces waiting times at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA), making it the first public hospital in the country to have such a facility.
Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the smart queue system (SQS) would be introduced in phases at HSA's specialist clinics before it is fully implemented by the end of the year.
'HSA sees about 2,000 patients each day, making it one of the busiest hospitals in the country.
'Once the SQS is fully implemented, we will hopefully replicate it in other hospitals such as Hospital Sultan Ismail and those in other districts to improve public healthcare delivery,' he said after visiting HSA here on Tuesday (June 17).
With the SQS, patients no longer need to take separate queue numbers at the respective specialist clinics and pharmacy.
They can obtain a queue number by scanning a QR code and use the same number for their medical needs for the day.
Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz added that the state government has also upgraded eight wards at HSA, collaborating with non-governmental organisations (NGO) for the contribution of beds and mattresses.
'Another NGO also contributed an ambulance, which was bought at a lower price as it is a reconditioned vehicle.
'It does not have to be brand new. As long as it is functioning well, we can address the shortage of ambulances,' he said.

KPJ Healthcare Launches KWAN Mobile Clinic At HSAJB To Support Public Healthcare In Johor

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ Healthcare) has launched the operations of its Klinik Waqaf An-Nur (KWAN) Mobile Clinic at Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru (HSAJB), Johor, to improve access to affordable care and support emergency services for the public. In a statement today, it said the mobile clinic provides after-hours treatment for non-critical cases and is aimed at reducing congestion at the hospital's Emergency and Trauma Department. The mobile clinic operates from 8 pm to 12 midnight, offering medical consultations, basic medications and medical certificates at subsidised rates equivalent to those at government hospitals and also supported by KPJ's digital Clinic Management System ('CMS'), which ensures safe, efficient and secure patient management. KPJ Healthcare President and Managing Director Chin Keat Chyuan said by expanding access to care after hours, they are helping to ease congestion at HSAJB while serving the community more effectively. 'This is also the first time a KWAN Mobile Clinic is operating within a public hospital setting in Johor, which reflects the strength of our collaboration with government partners. It is part of our commitment under the KPJ Health System to deliver more connected, inclusive care,' he said. The launch of KWAN Mobile Clinic was officiated by the Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and attended by Johor State Executive Councillor for Health and Enviroment Ling Tian Soon, Johor State Health Department (JKNJ) Director Dr Mohtar Pungut @ Ahmad, HSAJB Director Dr Mohamad Nizam Subahir, as well as senior representatives from KPJ Healthcare and Waqaf An-Nur Corporation Berhad. The initiative is a collaboration involving the Johor State Government, JKNJ, Waqaf An-Nur Corporation Berhad, and the Johor State Health Exco Office. KWAN Mobile Clinic services in Johor began in 2017 and currently in operation through two mobile units that serve various communities across the state. The addition of HSAJB as a new service point is expected to increase outreach to patients, including those seeking treatment at public hospitals. To date, KWAN has treated more than 2.2 million patients nationwide through a network comprising eight static clinics, eight dialysis centres with 192 dialysis machines, and nine mobile units.

Less waiting, better care: Johor MB's mission at Sultanah Aminah Hospital

Johor Baru: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi visited Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) to oversee the progress of several key initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services, reducing patient congestion, cutting down waiting times, and enhancing overall efficiency. Among the central features of the visit was a review of Klinik Wakaf An-Nur, a community-based outpatient clinic now operating five days a week for non-critical cases. The clinic provides an alternative for patients seeking treatment for minor ailments, helping ease pressure on HSA's Emergency Department, particularly during peak hours. "I have directed an increase in the number of doctors to expand treatment capacity and reduce patient waiting times," Onn Hafiz said in his Facebook post yesterday. Onn Hafiz, a hands-on leader, has a strong penchant for visiting government service providers and listening to public concerns as part of his commitment to addressing social issues in local communities. Onn Hafiz said that, together with Johor Health and Environment Committee Chairman Ling Tian Soon, he visited the hospital to review the progress of key initiatives aimed at enhancing patient comfort and healthcare services. In line with the state's digitization efforts, HSA will soon implement a Smart Queue System (SQS) in July, which allows patients to check appointments and obtain queue numbers online, he said. The system only requires patients to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled time, a major improvement over long, early-morning queues that have been the norm. "This is a major step forward in modernising our public healthcare system," said Onn Hafiz. "The SQS will not only streamline patient flow but also improve transparency and minimize overcrowding in hospital waiting areas." Onn Hafiz also inspected infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to HSA's main power supply and electrical systems, which are critical to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare operations. He said that Ward West 5 will soon be reopened, with thanks extended to NGOs and donors who contributed beds and mattresses to support the ward's reactivation. "I am aware and deeply mindful that many people of Johor are still waiting for better, faster, and more compassionate healthcare services," Onn Hafiz said. With surging medical and healthcare costs, many Malaysians are turning to public hospitals, which offer quality services at a fraction of the cost of private hospitals. However, this has led to congestion and long queues. Public healthcare also faces shortages of qualified medical professionals.

New system cuts down on waiting

Staying patient: Patients and their families waiting for their turn to receive medical treatment at Hospital Sultanah Aminah. The new system will streamline the process. JOHOR BARU: Johor's Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) is set to become the first public hospital in Malaysia to adopt a RM1mil smart queue system (SQS) aimed at reducing patients' waiting time. With the SQS, patients will no longer have to take separate queue numbers at the hospital's specialist clinics and pharmacy department. They can obtain a queue number by scanning a QR code with their smartphone and use the same queue number for their medical needs for the day. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the SQS will begin in phases at HSA's specialist clinics before it is fully implemented by the end of the year. 'HSA sees about 2,000 patients each day, making it one of the busiest hospitals in the country. 'Once the SQS is fully implemented, we will hopefully replicate the system in other hospitals, such as Hospital Sultan Ismail and those in other districts to improve public healthcare delivery,' he said after visiting HSA here yesterday. Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon explained that the SQS was developed to address high patient volume and congestion issues faced by the hospital. 'At present, patients need to take a queue number to see a specialist and then take another number to queue up for their medication, which is time consuming. 'The SQS allows patients to know the number of patients ahead of them via a smartphone app so they can move around or go for tea or toilet breaks without worrying about losing their turn,' he added. At present, Ling said the system is being tested and that some patients have begun using it. Onn Hafiz said the SQS was part of the state's ongoing efforts to address issues faced by the hospital, in addition to upgrading eight wards, toilets and surau facilities. The state is working with non-governmental organisations, which had contributed new hospital beds and mattresses as well as an ambulance. He said that Waqaf An-Nur has stationed a mobile clinic at HSA's entrance to provide additional support for the hospital's emergency and trauma department, which tends to get very busy at night and on weekends. 'They will be assisting HSA five days a week to tend to non-critical or level five cases such as fever or cough, which do not require a specialist doctor's attention. 'I have also directed Ling to station at least two additional doctors a day at the emergency and trauma department on a locum basis. I believe that can be done by next week,' he said. When asked about the proposal for a multi-level carpark, Onn Hafiz said a value assessment study has been completed. 'I understand that funding has been secured and the value assessment has just concluded,' he said. Aside from the current practice of parking within hospital grounds, he said patients have the alternative of parking at a free carpark at Pantai Lido, across the road from the hospital. Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an allocation of RM500mil for first phase upgrades of the hospital on Sept 4, 2023. Among the proposed upgrades include the construction of a polyclinic and multi-storey car park to address hospital congestion.
