Cardi B Named ‘Voice Of The Culture' At 2025 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards

Yahoo09-06-2025

Ahead of the 2025 BET Awards, the unsung heroes of Hip-Hop and R&B — a.k.a. songwriters and producers— were honored at this year's ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards. Held at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons on Sunday (June 8), the hitmakers gathered to celebrate various achievements.
The Voice of the Culture Award is presented to Cardi B, set aside for those who've had a massive influence on music and culture. Past recipients of the award include Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, D-Nice and T.I. When the Bronx-bred emcee took the stage, she was overjoyed and gracious.
'My voice has always been a reflection of what I live and what I'm living, which I feel is a true reflection of the people, the culture, my friends, my family, and the environment that I grew up in,' gushed the Grammy-winning rapper. 'I like to put that in my music— my joys, my pains, my drama, everything.'
She continued, 'I hate the idea that if you don't write every line on your own, it makes what you have to say not real. Music is a collaboration, it has always been. The biggest hits [and] the greatest records come from teamwork. They come from sharing experiences, energy, pain and joy. It's not about ego, it's about impact. I write, I co-write, I rewrite. I speak to what's true to me. My pen, my mind and my feelings are in every verse and in every hook. I respect every writer who brings their magic to the table. This award is not just for me, it's for the culture.'
Cardi's hit, 'Enough (Miami)' also snagged an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award. The rapper made history back in 2020 as the first woman to receive the esteemed ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year Award for two consecutive years. Kendrick Lamar and Mustard's 'Not Like Us' was named ASCAP R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap Song of the Year while songwriter OZ was given the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year honor, for contributing to hits like Drake and J. Cole's 'First Person Shooter,' Jack Harlow's 'Lovin On Me,' and Travis Scott's 'I Know?'
Cece Winans' 'That's My King,' was named ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Gospel Song of the Year, and Sony Music Publishing took home the coveted honor of ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Publisher of the Year.

Cardi B's Cowboy Carter Look Is a Must-See

Turns out, even A-list celebrities are hyped about some of the summer's biggest tours—Ya ya Cardi B! Over the next few months, superstar artists from Beyoncé to Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and SZA, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo are on the road with their buzzy concert experiences. In the stan-filled crowds, you will often find fellow celebrities watching on from their VIP seats or pen. (Because who doesn't love taking in a summer show?). This week, for one, Beyoncé has brought the mammoth Cowboy Carter tour to Paris, and Cardi B is the latest star that's been spotted arriving to the stadium to show support and witness Bey on the top of her game—in a perfect rodeo-inspired look, no less. It's no secret that the official dress code for the Cowboy Carter tour is western-inflected, and Cardi B fit the vibe perfectly with her avant-garde cowgirl getup. Cardi wore a calf-hair jacket with a fringed bodysuit to match, cinched at the waist with a leather belt adorned with saloon-slinging buckles. To take it up another level, she accessorized the look with springbok-like boots, a furry cowboy hat, and statement turquoise jewelry.

Cardi B Releases First Song of 2025 'Outside' amid Estrangement from Offset: 'I Was Very, Very Angry'

Cardi B has released her first single of 2025 with "Outside" "I made this song a few months ago when I was very, very angry," the rapper said in a video on Instagram Stories ahead of its release Cardi debuted the song on Wednesday, June 18 during a Spotify event in CannesCardi B is back! On Friday, June 20, the rapper released her first single of 2025 with "Outside" after debuting it at a Spotify event in Cannes two days prior. "OUTSIDE 😤 IS OUT NOW," Cardi, 32, wrote in an Instagram post. She also celebrated the release with a video on Instagram Stories. "If y'all wouldn't have asked for it, I wouldn't have put it out," Cardi said in the video posted on Thursday, June 19. She continued: "I made this song a few months ago when I was very, very angry. I had to change some bars because I was angry, honey.' The summer anthem, which comes amid her estrangement from Offset, was produced by Charlie Heat and HeyMicki, per Genius. 'When I tell you these n----- ain't shit, please believe me (Let's go),' Cardi raps on the track 'They gon' f--- on anything, these n----- way too easy (Facts) / Good for nothing, low-down, dirty dogs, I'm convinced (Yeah) / Next time you see your momma, tell her how she raised a bitch." On Wednesday, June 18, Cardi performed "Outside" live for the first time during Spotify's Cannes event. According to Variety, she played Megan Thee Stallion team-ups "Bongos" and "WAP" and performed songs including 'I Like It,' 'Bodak Yellow,' 'Money" and 'Up." PEOPLE can confirm she also performed her song "Bartier Cardi," but noticeably didn't mention Offset's name during the song. According to the publication, Cardi noted she was having 'a bad day today" in the midst of the show, saying she wasn't sure 'if it's because I'm sleepy or hungry but there's always tomorrow.' Friday Music Guide: New Music From Karol G, Benson Boone, Cardi B, Haim and More

Billboard's Friday Music Guide serves as a handy guide to this Friday's most essential releases — the key music that everyone will be talking about today, and that will be dominating playlists this weekend and beyond. This week, Karol G explores Latin history, Benson Boone's Heart beats loudly, and Cardi B is ready to take the gloves off. Check out all of this week's picks below: More from Billboard The Ultimate Latin Playlist For a Feel-Good Summer 2025: Listen Jelly Roll & Brandon Lake's 'Hard Fought Hallelujah' Collab Certified Platinum Nick Cannon Forgets Two of His 12 Kids' Names While Trying to List Them: 'I Usually Get in Trouble' Karol G, In the lead-up to Tropicoqueta, Karol G has been candid when discussing how 2023's smash hit Mañana Será Bonito and its coinciding world tour left her wondering what the best next step would be for her long-term future; it turns out that the answer was in the past, as Tropicoqueta reveals more of Karol's backstory while also exploring and celebrating different strands of Latin music, creating a curious, wholly absorbing new chapter. Benson Boone, If 'Beautiful Things' changed the trajectory of Benson Boone's pop career, then American Heart, his new album released more than a year after his breakthrough smash, represents the crystallization of everything we've learned about the backflipping, big-voiced singer-songwriter in the interim: the 10-song project is relatively short but full of theatrical spunk, as Boone prowls across each song with feeling and determination. Cardi B, 'Outside' A long-awaited new Cardi B track titled 'Outside,' released on the cusp of summer, might be perceived as a new warm-weather anthem from an artist who's had a few of them — but the single is instead a cutthroat diss track at an estranged romantic partner, with Cardi using her clout and cunning ('Favorite player from your favorite team, he in my DMs!' she exclaims) to move on personally and artistically. Haim, By releasing a new album every four years, Danielle, Alana and Este Haim have been able to take their time expertly crafting the pop-rock melodies that they've always traded in, and the overarching themes of the full-lengths that house them. With I Quit, 2021's masterful Women In Music Pt. III receives a follow-up full of airtight compositions, housed within a full-length statement about moving on from unnecessary details in order to appreciate our limited time on Earth. Sombr, 'We Never Dated' 'I can't make you love me,' Sombr repeats on new single 'We Never Dated,' approaching a time-honored theme in pop songwriting with Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies and a modern sense of tenacity; with breakthrough hits 'Undressed' and 'Back to Friends,' the teen star was able to reinvigorate a classic alternative sound for 2025, and 'We Never Dated' continues that balancing act with aplomb. Megan Moroney, '6 Months Later' Megan Moroney's songwriting has rapidly sharpened over the past few years, as a line like 'What doesn't kill you calls you six months later' on her new single makes for a devastatingly funny eye-roll toward an ex — but the real attraction here is Moroney's voice, full of weariness when recalling a breakup and packing smoky, sarcastic personality in each syllable, on a song that the rising country star soundly commands. Fred again.., Skepta & PlaqueBoyMax, 'Victory Lap' After playing a surprise show together in Brooklyn earlier this week, Fred again.. and Skepta have commemorated the unexpected team-up with a summer-ready single: 'Victory Lap' is a restless, scorching dance cut, with the fusion of Fred and Skepta's respective energies producing a slickly rhymed, garage-adjacent banger that does not stop moving. Editor's Pick: Lorde, 'Hammer' The third and final pre-release single from Lorde's Virgin begins with what sounds like out-of-focus chatter, before the pop star's voice barges in to provide clarity: 'There's a heat in the pavement, my mercury's raising / Don't know if it's love, or if it's ovulation.' Lorde has long been a wry, literary songwriter, and throughout 'Hammer' — the album track, which she described as 'an ode to city life and horniness' — she once again captures universal feelings in striking, singular fashion. Best of Billboard Chart Rewind: In 1989, New Kids on the Block Were 'Hangin' Tough' at No. 1 Janet Jackson's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits H.E.R. & Chris Brown 'Come Through' to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart
