NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Saturday directed Air India to remove its three senior officials from all roles related to crew scheduling and rostering, news agency PTI reported quoting sources.
As per the report, one of those named is a divisional vice president at the airline.
On 12 June, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, tragically crashed into a hostel at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar, shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Of the 242 people aboard, 241 died, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, along with dozens more on the ground.
In its order dated 20 June, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed Tata Group-owned Air India to promptly initiate internal disciplinary action against three officials.
A week later, significant progress has been made in identifying victims. Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said: 'As of 5.45 pm, 231 DNA samples of the deceased have matched with their family members. Out of those 231 matched samples, 210 bodies have been handed over to their families.'

Air India's CEO and MD, Campbell Wilson, reassured the public that the fleet, especially Boeing 787s, remains safe. In a statement, he confirmed: 'Have our aircraft been deemed safe? Yes.
We have completed the additional precautionary checks…' He emphasised the airline's commitment to caution: 'Where there is any doubt, we will not release aircraft …for service.'
Wilson pledged ongoing support for affected families and staff: 'We continue to mourn… Around 500 colleagues from Air India and 17 other Tata companies remain in Ahmedabad to help the families… 200 have received some degree of solace and closure.' He added: 'The counselling services… continue to be available to everyone and I encourage you to avail of it.'

Court orders trial of 10 cops for custodial torture

Rajkot: A court here has ordered criminal proceedings against ten policemen for alleged custodial torture of a suspect in 2015. These policemen were posted at Gandhigram police station in Rajkot at the time and will now face trial. Second additional chief judicial magistrate V D Modh issued summons to all ten accused, directing them to appear before the court. The next hearing will be on Aug 2. The matter dates to Jan 6, 2015, when a judicial magistrate first class submitted a private letter to the district judge, raising concerns about custodial torture. The complaint was based on allegations by Chetan Gondaliya, who had been arrested under IPC Sections 307 (attempted murder), 504 (intentional insult) and others. The district judge ordered an inquiry into the allegations, under which the court recorded Gondaliya's testimony and that of the treating doctor, who also submitted a medical certificate for injuries suffered. In its order dated May 29, 2025, the court observed: "This court submitted the inquiry report to the district judge on May 23, 2025, finding prima facie that Gandhigram police station inspector V M Jadeja, PSI Haidya, DCP Chaudhary, Kuldeepsinh Jadeja, Siddhrajsinh Jadeja, Kisan, Pratap, Raju Bala, Kripalsinh and Ravat Ahir, in connivance with each other, assaulted Chetan Gondaliya, causing bodily injuries and thereby committed offences punishable under IPC Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 114 (abetment). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Laxmi Ji Idol For Wealth, Peace & Happiness Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo " On May 27, the district court directed the magisterial court to begin criminal proceedings. ADG Nikhil Gupta guides cops on better policing practices

Nashik: ADG (Law & Order) Nikhil Gupta on Saturday instructed senior police officers of Nashik city police and Nashik Range to enhance the detection rate of property offences, decrease the backlog of citizen applications, and prioritise tasks related to police stations. He urged officers to utilise the eSakshya app, which the police use to record digital evidence. Gupta directed ACPs of the police commissionerate and SDPOs of district police to visit each police station within their jurisdiction at least once a week. During these visits, these officers should review the applications that the police stations receive, examine the case diaries of Investigation Officers (IOs), inspect documents related to accidental deaths, and provide guidance to the IOs. These measures aim to increase the detection rate. "Routine work often leads to certain things related to policing to get missed, which were pointed out to the officers. Apart from advising them on improving the detection rate related to property offences, usage of eSakshya, a platform for recording digital evidence, registering Zero FIRs and swiftly transferring them to the concerned police station, etc, were suggested to the officers," said ADG Nikhil Gupta. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Gupta added, "Maintain zero tolerance to the smuggling of narcotic drugs and illegal weapons." Murder over peeing near shop: Cops draw flak for accused getting bail

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The city police arrested the five accused following the murder of a man and the injury of two people during a brawl over urinating near a chicken shop in the Mukundwadi area late on Thursday. However, the accused obtained bail within 24 hours of their arrest, drawing criticism of the city police. On Friday, special judge (SC & ST Act) A R Ubale granted bail after ACP Sudarshan Patil presented the accused in court seeking their police custody. Judge Ubale ruled the arrest illegal due to non-compliance with constitutional and legal safeguards, notably article 22(1) of the Constitution and section 47 of the BNS. In his order, Judge Ubale stated: "Apex Court cast duty on the trial court to declare the arrest to be illegal and to release the accused on bail, forthwith, if there is non-compliance with the constitutional mandate. As in the present case, the grounds of arrest are not communicated to the accused Nos.1 to 5 in writing, their arrest becomes illegal. Therefore, the accused Nos. 1 to 5 are entitled to be released from custody on furnishing bail and bonds. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo " The court noted although the investigating officer, ACP Patil, claimed to have informed the accused of the grounds of arrest, he admitted that no written communication was made. Though there were station diary entries in this regard, the arrest memo entries lacked any mention of specific grounds for arrest. Judge Ubale relied on key Supreme Court rulings, including Vihaan Kumar vs State of Haryana, Pankaj Bansal v Union of India, and Prabir Purkayastha v State (NCT of Delhi), reaffirming the mandatory requirement to inform an arrested person in writing and in comprehensible language about the reasons for arrest. The court held that any violation renders the arrest and remand process illegal, though it does not affect the validity of the investigation or trial. The five accused — Mastan alias Nanna Husain Qureshi, Samir Khan Sartaj Khan, Babar Shaikh Afsar Shaikh, Sajid Quresh alias Sajju Ahmed Qureshi, and Nasir Khan Mohammad Munir Khan — were granted bail on a personal bond of Rs25,000 each, along with one solvent surety. The court directed them to cooperate with the investigation and attend the MIDC Cidco police station every Saturday and Sunday until the chargesheet is filed. Meanwhile, Satara area police station arrested the five accused in a pending dacoity case.
