Ahmedabad plane crash: DNA confirms identities of 223 of those killed
Eight days after the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, the identities of 220 persons who died have been confirmed through DNA testing, The New Indian Express reported on Friday. The bodies of 204 persons have been handed over to their families as of 11.50 am on Friday, Civil Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi told the newspaper. This includes the bodies of two persons who succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which was en route to London's Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad, crashed just 33 seconds after taking off. This is being viewed as the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade. There were 242 people aboard the aircraft. One passenger survived with ' impact injuries '. Thirty-four persons were also killed on the ground after the plane crashed into the hostel building of the BJ Medical College and Hospital in Ahmedabad, according to Air India. Rakesh Joshi, the civil hospital superintendent, told The New Indian Express that among the 223 bodies that have been identified, 168 were Indians, 36 British citizens, seven Portuguese and one Canadian. Another 11 persons were those who were not in the aircraft, but were in buildings into which it crashed. The remains of 15 victims were transported by air, while 189 were sent via road, the doctor added. Meanwhile, India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is yet to decide whether flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the aircraft that crashed will be sent overseas for analysis, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Thursday. The decision will be taken 'after due assessment of all technical, safety, and security considerations'. The ministry issued the clarification after certain media outlets reported that the recorders were being sent abroad for analysis. 'The Ministry of Civil Aviation urge all stakeholders to refrain from speculation on such sensitive matters and to allow the investigative process to proceed with the seriousness and professionalism it warrants,' the statement added. The Tata Group's chairman N Chandrasekaran on Thursday told Times Now that one of the engines of the Air India plane that crashed was new and installed in March, while the other was installed in 2023 and was not due for servicing until December.

AHMEDABAD: DNA samples of 223 victims of the Air India plane crash have been successfully matched, and 204 bodies have been handed over to families as of 11:50 am on June 20, according to Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi. The Civil Hospital authorities have intensified the efforts to identify and return the remaining bodies. Meanwhile, two patients under treatment at the Civil Hospital succumbed to their injuries. Their bodies have been handed over to their families, bringing the total count of bodies handed over to 204 from the Civil Hospital alone. Breaking down the identification further, Dr Joshi confirmed that the 223 matched victims comprise 168 Indian nationals, 7 Portuguese, 36 British citizens, 1 Canadian, and 11 non-passengers - local residents who were tragically caught in the crash zone.

DNA matches identified 215 victims in the Air India AI-171 plane crash while mortal remains of a total of 198 deceased were handed over to their respective families, ANI reported. Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi on June 20 said, "215 DNA samples have been matched, of which the mortal remains of 198 deceased have been handed over to their the 198 deceased, 149 are Indian nationals, seven Portuguese, 32 British and one Canadian." As per the report, the mortal remains of 183 victims were dispatched by road through ambulances while the bodies of remaining 15 victims were dispatched by air. Earlier on Thursday, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik informed ANI that 222 victims of the Air India plane crash have been identified. According to GS Malik, DNA samples were used to identify 214 individuals while eight were identified without DNA matching. The devastating Air India crash took place on June 12 when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner set off for its journey from Gujarat's Ahmedabad. Moments after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, the aircraft rammed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu held a high-level video conference with all Airport Directors across the country to review ground-level preparedness and passenger support mechanisms in the light of rescheduling of flights happening due to multiple reasons like post-accident checks, weather changes, closing of certain airspaces due to geopolitical tensions, etc. According to a release from the Civil Aviation Ministry, several directives were issued during the meeting, including Close liaison with airlines, which was emphasised to ensure passenger issues are addressed swiftly and on the spot. Availability of food, drinking water, and adequate seating facilities at terminals must be ensured, particularly during flight delays or congestion. Sufficient personnel must be deployed at key touchpoints to manage passenger grievances proactively.
