‘This kid is a superstar': Michael Clarke backs Sai Sudharsan's Test debut at No 3 for India vs England
With India embracing a Test transition from the forthcoming five-match series in England onwards, former Australia captain Michael Clarke has made his pick for India's key No. 3 position as skipper Shubman Gill is slated to take over the No. 4 position vacated after Virat Kohli's retirement.
Clarke has picked Tamil Nadu sensation Sai Sudharsan to be drafted directly to take over the slot when Gill slides one spot down from No. 3 starting June 20 in Headingley.
'To me, this kid is a superstar, Sai Sudharsan. I think he is a number three in Test cricket. I think he is probably going to open the batting in time in India's T20I and ODI team. He is in their Test squad. He gets his first opportunity in England,' Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast.
The left-handed Sudharsan had a dream IPL season with the Gujarat Titans. Outscoring his captain Gill, Sudharsan topped the batting charts in the league, winning the Orange Cap after slamming 759 runs in 15 matches. Averaging 54.21 with a strike rate of 156.17, Sudharsan notched up a century and six fifties as the Titans finished fourth in the Playoffs.
Despite holding a sub-40 average in First-Class cricket, Clarka has backed Sudharsan to fit in well at number three for India.
'I think he can walk in straight to bat at number three. I think technically he's very good, he's got all the shots and mentally, he's ready. He really impressed me and he's a good looking player as well,' Clarke said.
Sudharsan won the Emerging Player of the Season award in the IPL 2025 edition and has previously appeared in two County stints with Surrey between 2023-24.
In his last outing for the side, Sudharsan cracked his maiden First-Class century in English conditons while batting at No. 6. Overall, the 23-year-old averages 39.93 for 1957 runs in 29 FC outings since his debut in 2022

England Receive Huge Boost For 2nd Test Against India: "Could Be In Mix..."
Injury-prone pacer Jofra Archer could be in the England mix for the second Test against India beginning July 2 as he is set for a red-ball comeback with Sussex at Durham in the County Championship, according to a report. The England pace bowling attack without the likes of Archer and Mark Wood has looked tepid in the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar series with India, led by new skipper Shubman Gill, scoring 471 runs in the first innings at Leeds. "Jofra Archer will return to red-ball cricket with Sussex -- despite not being named in squad for County Championship match at Durham. If he comes through the match unscathed, he could be in the mix to play in the second Test against India at Edgbaston," said a report in Sky Sports. It said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that the pacer will be in Sussex's travelling group for the four-day fixture beginning later on Sunday. Archer, who played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL season, has not been a part of first-class cricket in four years due to injuries. The 30-year-old quick was initially not in the 12-player travelling squad for the County Championship match, raising doubts about his fitness but the ECB and Sussex later said the Barbadian-English cricketer will be travelling for the match at Chester-le-Street. If Archer is part of the playing XI and his body holds up in the red-ball fixture, he could be in contention for the second Test at Edgbaston from July 2 or the third at Lord's from July 10. Archer has only played white-ball cricket for England since 2021 because of recurring elbow and back injuries. He was initially due to make a red-ball comeback for England Lions against India A but a thumb injury, suffered during the IPL, did not heal in time. England skipper Ben Stokes had said earlier this month that Archer, who has 42 wickets in 13 Tests, was keen to return to Test cricket. "Randomly, a couple of times he would just send me a text... I was like, 'Let's just hold it there, alright. I know you're in a good spot right now but let's not just rush into it'. "He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats," Stokes had said. "It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof (Archer) that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place, and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket."

Owens powerplay blitz, Chapmans grit help Washington Freedom edge past MI New York in MLC thriller
Dallas [US], June 22 (ANI): Washington Freedom survived a dramatic collapse to clinch a hard-fought win over MI New York (MINY) in their Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 clash in Dallas on Saturday. Despite a middle-overs stutter, a blazing start by Mitchell Owen proved just enough to carry Freedom over the line in a tense chase of 189, as per ESPNcricinfo. Freedom looked in complete control early on, racing to 74/2 at the end of the powerplay. Owen hammered 60 off just 26 deliveries, including five boundaries and five sixes. Young seamer Rushil Ugarkar bore the brunt of the onslaught, leaking 22 runs in his first over, Owen smashing him for three sixes. However, Owen's dismissal in the eighth over triggered a slowdown. With Rachin Ravindra and Andries Gous already back in the pavilion, Freedom's chase lost momentum. Mark Chapman and Jack Edwards attempted to stabilise the innings with a 41-run stand for the fourth wicket, but it took them 5.5 overs, far from the tempo Freedom needed. While Chapman struggled to accelerate, he did well to hold his ground as wickets tumbled around him. Sunny Patel and Naveen-ul-Haq led MINY's spirited comeback through the middle overs, putting Freedom under real pressure. The tension only escalated during the death overs. Trent Boult bowled a masterful 18th over, conceding just a single run and taking a wicket, threatening to swing the game MI New York's way but MINY had exhausted their frontline bowlers by then and were forced to turn back to Rushil Ugarkar for the 19th. That over proved costly, offering Chapman and Freedom the opening they needed to regain control. Earlier, after being put in to bat, MI New York had started brightly with Quinton de Kock and Monank Patel powering them to 70 in the powerplay but the innings shifted almost immediately after, with Owen striking with the ball on the first delivery after the powerplay, a full delivery on the pads that Monank mis-hit to deep fine leg. On another day, it might have disappeared for six. Despite their strong start, MI New York faltered. Nicholas Pooran, struggling for form after a bright Indian Premier League (IPL) start, managed 33 off 30 balls, his highest score of MLC 2025 so far, but it slowed the innings significantly. De Kock, too, fell for a well-made 55 off 34 balls. It was Michael Bracewell who finally injected some momentum with an unbeaten 42 off 24 balls, featuring five fours and a six, one of just four sixes in the entire MI New York innings. His late surge helped the team post a competitive 188. In the end, it was a tale of two powerplays and composure under pressure. While Freedom scored 74 in the powerplay and 95 in the middle overs, MI New York managed 70 and 78 respectively during the same phases. It was the early assault by Owen and the calm finishing touches from Chapman that proved decisive. With this win, Washington Freedom climbed to six points from four matches, tying with Texas Super Kings, though they remain third on the table due to an inferior net run-rate.
