No Shubman Gill! Panesar Backs GT Batter To Be Next Superstar Of Indian Cricket

Last Updated: Former England spinner Monty Panesar has backed Sai Sudharsan to become the next superstar of Indian cricket. Sudharsan was in red-hot form for GT in IPL 2025. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has reserved big praise for 23-year-old left-handed batter B Sai Sudharsan and backed him to become the next superstar of Indian cricket. Sudharsan, who has earned his maiden India Test call-up for the upcoming five-match series against England starting June 20 in Leeds, was in red-hot form for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025. He played 15 matches for the Shubman Gill-led side as an opening batter and, with the help of one century and six fifties, amassed a total of 759 runs. For his super show with the bat, Sudharsan won the Orange Cap in IPL 2025 and also bagged the Emerging Player of the Season award. The Tamil Nadu-based batter has played three ODIs and one T20I for Men in Blue so far, and he is now expected to play a big role for Shubman Gill & Co. in the upcoming five matches. Ahead of Sudharsan's much-awaited Test debut, Panesar, who played 50 Tests for England from 2006 to 2013 and picked up 167 wickets, said that the left-handed batter is very aggressive and fearless and could be the next superstar. 'The one thing that I want this Indian team to do is carry on the legacy of Virat Kohli. The way he played Test cricket. I would like to see the young Indian team play like that," Panesar told InsideSport. Sudharsan, who is likely to make his Test debut as a No. 3 batter, has 1957 runs to his name in 29 First Class matches played so far. He hammered a double century for Tamil Nadu against Delhi at Arun Jaitley Stadium in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. First Published: June 09, 2025, 15:18 IST

New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Former batter Robin Uthappa 'genuinely believes' Sai Sudharsan is one of India's future three-format players alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill after his impressive display in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sudharsan dazzled at the top during the Gujarat Titans' impressive run to the Eliminator in the recently concluded cash-rich league. He finished as the top run-getter in the tournament, ahead of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler and others. The 23-year-old, who retired during GT's encounter against the Mumbai Indians in 2023, has included a couple of shots in his repertoire and notched up swashbuckling performances throughout his recent campaign. 'One name that immediately comes to mind is Sai Sudharsan. His evolution over the last couple of years has been phenomenal. Just last year, he was retired out in a game for not scoring quickly enough. And this year, he hasn't changed his technique or approach; he's just added a couple of shots, knows when to accelerate, and suddenly his strike rate has jumped from 130 to 170,' Uthappa said at the launch of the Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26. Sudharsan carved out 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.21, with a strike rate of 156.17, a century and six fifties. After his sizzling performances, Sudharsan walked away with the Orange Cap and was adjudged the Emerging Player of the Season. Apart from his exploits in T20s, Sudharsan caught the attention of spectators with his breathtaking performances in last season's Ranji Trophy. During his three robust appearances for Tamil Nadu, he handsomely struck 304 runs at 76.00 with a century and a fifty each. After his string of consistent runs across formats, Sudharsan was named in India's squad for the five high-stakes Tests in England. As Sudharsan continued to soar to new heights, Uthappa saw another all-format player in him. 'Now, he's the Orange Cap holder. That's mighty impressive. I genuinely believe he's one of India's future three-format players, alongside the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, all young guns in their own right. Then you've got players like Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and so many others stepping up. This is a boiling pot of talent, and I don't think it's slowing down anytime soon,' he added. (ANI)

‘This kid is a superstar': Michael Clarke backs Sai Sudharsan's Test debut at No 3 for India vs England

With India embracing a Test transition from the forthcoming five-match series in England onwards, former Australia captain Michael Clarke has made his pick for India's key No. 3 position as skipper Shubman Gill is slated to take over the No. 4 position vacated after Virat Kohli's retirement. Clarke has picked Tamil Nadu sensation Sai Sudharsan to be drafted directly to take over the slot when Gill slides one spot down from No. 3 starting June 20 in Headingley. 'To me, this kid is a superstar, Sai Sudharsan. I think he is a number three in Test cricket. I think he is probably going to open the batting in time in India's T20I and ODI team. He is in their Test squad. He gets his first opportunity in England,' Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast. The left-handed Sudharsan had a dream IPL season with the Gujarat Titans. Outscoring his captain Gill, Sudharsan topped the batting charts in the league, winning the Orange Cap after slamming 759 runs in 15 matches. Averaging 54.21 with a strike rate of 156.17, Sudharsan notched up a century and six fifties as the Titans finished fourth in the Playoffs. Despite holding a sub-40 average in First-Class cricket, Clarka has backed Sudharsan to fit in well at number three for India. 'I think he can walk in straight to bat at number three. I think technically he's very good, he's got all the shots and mentally, he's ready. He really impressed me and he's a good looking player as well,' Clarke said. Sudharsan won the Emerging Player of the Season award in the IPL 2025 edition and has previously appeared in two County stints with Surrey between 2023-24. In his last outing for the side, Sudharsan cracked his maiden First-Class century in English conditons while batting at No. 6. Overall, the 23-year-old averages 39.93 for 1957 runs in 29 FC outings since his debut in 2022

IPL 2025 awards: Suryakumar Yadav crowned MVP; Emerging Player of the Season, Orange Cap, Purple Cap winners announced

Mumbai Indians' (MI) dynamic batter Suryakumar Yadav was crowned the Most Valuable Player of the Season, while Gujarat Titans' (GT) consistent top-order star Sai Sudharsan was adjudged the Emerging Player of the Season following the conclusion of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday (June 3, 2025). Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended its 18-year-long IPL trophy drought by trouncing Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a pulsating final. Punjab misfired in its attempt to gun down Bengaluru's 191-run target and, in the end, stood one hit away from turning its sorrow into euphoria. Krunal Pandya bamboozled Punjab batters with his spin, while Josh Hazlewood added the finishing touches with his searing pace to cap off an impressive outing with the ball.
