Rape accused joined search after crime, took victim to hospital: Police

KANPUR After sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl and attempting to murder her in Kanpur's Ghatampur locality on Tuesday, the accused, a 21-year-old neighbour, allegedly returned home after the gory act, washed his clothes, took a bath, and then joined the victim's family in search of the child who had been missing from home, behaving as if nothing had happened, said police on Wednesday.
The minor had gone to a nearby grocery store around 4pm when the accused youth allegedly lured her to a secluded spot on the pretext of offering her a chocolate. 'He outraged her modesty, and when the girl screamed in pain, the assailant allegedly stuffed her mouth with leaves and soil. As she continued to cry and resist, he repeatedly hit her with a brick until she lost consciousness,' said deputy commissioner of police (south) Deependra Nath Chaudhary.
An FIR was lodged under relevant sections of the BNS and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
The accused, who resides across a narrow lane from the victim's house in a sparsely populated locality, is said to have used his familiarity with the family to lure the girl away while she was playing outside her home on Tuesday evening.
'When I was asking others about my daughter's whereabouts, he told me that she was lying behind the Syed Baba ki Mazar,' the victim's mother recalled from the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where the girl remains in the intensive care unit.
Police said the accused led the family to the child's location near the mazar around 11pm and then rushed her to the hospital on his motorcycle. The CCTV footage shows him transporting the grievously injured child to the local community health centre.
According to the police, the accused fled the locality soon after many women identified him as the last person seen with the child. 'My daughter used to call him 'uncle'. He took her with him and then hit her with a brick on the face,' said the distraught father, a local e-rickshaw repairman.
'The manner in which he joined the search made it impossible to suspect him. He acted like one of us,' he added.
The area near the mazar, surrounded by dense trees, is largely deserted in the evenings. It was here, the police said, that the accused allegedly struck the child with a brick and attempted to suffocate her by stuffing leaves into her mouth.
After committing the crime, he returned to his house, cleaned himself up, and actively joined the search. His familiarity with the family and the neighbourhood allowed him to deflect suspicion, until eyewitnesses placed him with the child just before her disappearance.
Police officials said the accused was adopted by a tubewell operator and his wife, and had been a frequent visitor to the victim's house.
The DCP confirmed that multiple teams have been deployed to track the accused, who remains at large. 'We are closing in on him. His arrest is imminent,' he said.
Kanpur commissioner of police Akhil Kumar visited the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday and remained there until dawn. Given the critical condition of the victim, a green corridor was created to expedite her transfer to the LLR hospital.

In a major breakthrough against digital financial fraud, Lucknow Police on Saturday busted a gang involved in illegally siphoning off nearly around ₹ 80 lakh through 'crypto trading' of USDT (Tether). Eight accused were arrested from various parts of the city. A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station under sections 317(2), 318(4), 61(2), and 111(2)(B) of the BNS, along with sections 66C and 66D of the IT Act, according to a press release issued by the cyber crime unit. Police said the accused operated a well-organised racket involving foreign handlers, mule bank accounts, and untraceable crypto wallets. In the past two months, ₹ 75–80 lakh was funneled through fake 'crypto trading' deals without using any legitimate exchange. Transactions were conducted via Telegram channels controlled by Chinese handlers, who used the TRC-20 network to bypass legal scrutiny. The gang's modus operandi involved recruiting local Indian account holders on a commission basis. These individuals were made to receive high-value deposits via NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS, which were then withdrawn in cash the same day and handed over to underground crypto brokers. These brokers purchased USDT using decentralised peer-to-peer (P2P) wallets that operate without KYC norms ensuring complete anonymity and making law enforcement tracking nearly impossible, stated the press release. During the police interrogation, the accused claimed to be 'crypto traders' but failed to produce any exchange records, GST documents, or wallet KYC details. Investigators confirmed that these wallets, often used for money laundering, were chosen precisely because they operate outside Indian jurisdiction and cannot be traced easily. The accused have been identified as Satyam Tiwari (21, Lucknow), Diwakar Vikram Singh (21, Basti), Saksham Tiwari (21, Raebareli), Vinod Kumar (24, Gonda), Krish Shukla (25, Lucknow), Mohd. Shad (31, Barabanki), Laiq Ahmed (32, Gonda, currently in Lucknow), and Manish Jaiswal (40, Lucknow), stated in a cyber crime press release on Saturday. The police recovered 16 mobile phones, 2 laptops, a tablet, ₹ 1.85 lakh in cash, 3 cheque books, a passbook, and 4 four-wheelers from the accused. The Cyber Crime Cell is now tracing other linked accounts and crypto wallet addresses, with further arrests expected in the coming days, the press release stated. A senior police official stated that the gang exploited loopholes in crypto regulation and bank account verification to run a cross-border financial crime operation masked as 'trading'. Investigations are underway to identify more links in the chain, especially handlers operating from abroad.

UP train horror: Delhi mason beaten to death; 10-km assault by 20 men in crowded coach

MEERUT: A 39-year-old man, working as a mason in Delhi and going home to visit his wife and children during the weekend in Baghpat, was beaten to death by a group of around 20 men. His ordeal lasted for almost 10 km on a crowded general compartment of the Delhi-Saharanpur passenger train on Friday night. Deepak Yadav suffered head injuries and was declared dead at a community health centre (CHC) moments later. SP (Govt Railway Police), Ashutosh Shukla, said, "Yadav of Khekra in Baghpat was travelling home when he got embroiled in a verbal spat with some fellow commuters over a seat. Some of them started beating him. Yadav sustained head injuries and was rushed to CHC once the train reached Khekra." SHO (GRP) Udham Singh Talan added, "This is a serious incident as fight took place on a moving train from Delhi." An FIR has been registered under BNS section 103 (murder) against five people so far and the rest are being identified. All five were arrested on Saturday. The body was sent for autopsy. Further probe is on." A video of the incident surfaced online on Saturday. In the clip, a man could be purportedly seen being kicked and punched in a crowded train compartment by some men, with a few other passengers trying to stop them. And then, in the video, the "culprits" could be seen jumping out one by one from the train as it approaches the Khekra station. A police officer, probing the case, said that the accused belong to places in and around Baghpat. Most of them travel in groups. Yadav also had his own group, and a few days ago, the two sides had a heated exchange on a moving train. He added: "The incident took place between Fakharpur and Khekra stations. One of his friends got down in Fakharpur, and it seems the perpetrators were waiting to catch him alone before the train approached his home village, Khekra." Yadav is survived by his wife, Savitri, and two children -- daughter Aayushi, 12, and son Aviral, 3. Rajveer Singh, the victim's neighbour, said, "He used to come over during weekends. His young family are in a state of shock. We want the culprits to be punished soon."
