Man gets five-year jail for harassing minor girl with disabilities
Trichy: The Mahila Fast Track Court in Trichy on Thursday sentenced a 28-year-old man to five years' imprisonment for sexually harassing a 15-year-old girl with disabilities in 2017. The accused, P Yogaprakash of Chinnamani Nagar in Tuticorin, was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Police said he became acquainted with the minor while visiting his sister's house in the district. During one such visit, he sexually harassed the girl. Following the incident, the victim's parents filed a complaint with the Jeeyapuram All Women Police Station (AWPS). Yogaprakash was arrested after police registered a case under Section 7 read with Section 8 of the Pocso Act . After hearing the final arguments, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to five years in prison along with a fine of ₹3,000.

Teacher arrested for sexually harassing 16-yr-old girl
Thanjavur: A govt school teacher has been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for sexually harassing a 16-year-old student. The accused, Ramesh, 56, a resident of Thanjavur district, is employed at a govt higher secondary school in Thiruvarur. He also runs a tuition centre at his residence. He is said to have lent money on interest to some of the students' families. According to police sources, the survivor, a Class 11 student, was repeatedly harassed by Ramesh under the guise of recovering a loan taken by her family. The latest incident occurred earlier this week when she visited his house alone, where Ramesh allegedly sexually harassed her and issued threats. The girl informed her mother, who filed a complaint at the all woman police station. Based on the complaint and subsequent inquiry, Ramesh was arrested on Wednesday. He is currently in custody. Further investigation is ongoing.

Tripura man sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping minor stepdaughter
A Tripura court on Wednesday handed out 20 years' imprisonment to a man who raped his minor stepdaughter. He was also ordered to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000, failing which he will have to serve an additional jail term of two months. Government counsel Ashmita Banik said the incident occurred in West Tripura district in August 2023. 'Though her mother was supposed to support her in this condition, she fled with her (rape-survivor's) stepfather. The minor's elder sister, who lives in South Tripura district, came to know about the incident and filed a complaint,' said the counsel. The minor rape survivor is living at a shelter home. Her stepfather was found guilty by the court under section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The court examined 19 witnesses during the trial. The court also ordered that the rape survivor be paid compensation under section 357 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Man gets 5-yr jail term for sodomising minor boy
Kendrapada: A 30-year-old man was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by the ad hoc additional district and sessions-cum-fast-track (Pocso) court in Jajpur on Wednesday for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy in 2020. Judge Sarat Chandra Dehuri found the man guilty under Section 377 of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict, with an additional year of imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine. According to the prosecution, the man dragged the boy to an isolated place near their village while he was playing on Dec 23, 2020. He threatened to kill the boy if he revealed the incident to anyone. The boy's mother filed an FIR the next day, leading to the man's arrest. Special public prosecutor Partha Sarathi Ray said the court's verdict was based on testimonies from seven witnesses, including the boy, and medical evidence. "The convict committed carnal intercourse against the order of nature with the minor," the court observed in its judgment.

3 held for assault on 9-year-old in Sarojini market
New Delhi: After a disturbing video showing a nine-year-old boy from Nepal being assaulted in south Delhi's Sarojini Nagar market surfaced online, Delhi Police nabbed three men in connection with the incident. The video, which circulated widely on social media on Tuesday, showed the boy crying and begging to be left alone while being slapped, abused and humiliated by a group of men. One of the men poured water into the boy's pants, while another used his foot to taunt and assault him. Police said the boy was a Class III student. The assault took place both inside a shop and a car. "One man is seen holding the boy's arms and waistband, slapping and threatening him, while another pours water down his pants. A third man is seen touching him with his foot and verbally abusing him," a senior police officer said. On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's mother, a case was registered under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 127 (wrongful confinement) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of BNS, along with sections of Juvenile Justice Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Sarojini Nagar Market Shopkeepers Association issued a clarification, distancing itself from the accused. In a joint statement by Group IV representatives Ashok Kalra and Ashok Randhawa, the association said none of the individuals involved was part of the registered market community. "These individuals are roadside vendors and not recognised members of Sarojini Nagar legal shopkeeper community. We strongly condemn any act of abuse or harassment, especially involving children, and support lawful action taken by authorities," the statement read.
