He praised the vision of the Ruler of Sharjah in adopting an organic farming model, which enhances soil fertility year after year.
Dr Al Tunaiji detailed that the third season of the wheat farm featured the cultivation of three distinct wheat varieties. The leading variety, Yokora Rojo from Saudi Arabia, was joined by Egypt 3 and Egypt 4 from Egypt, both of which showcased remarkable yield and robust stalks in experimental plots. The Egyptian varieties shown a higher protein content in Sharjah compared to their country of origin.
Additionally, corn silage was planted on 12.5 hectares as a trial phase to provide green fodder for cattle, producing over 500 tons of easily digestible feed. Plans are underway to expand summer farming with leguminous forage crops, ensuring crop rotation between grass and legumes to supply organic feed.
The CEO of Iktifa stated that agricultural researchers at the farm are actively working on developing new experimental wheat strains, aiming to create the "Sharjah 1" variety. He noted that the third season saw the cultivation of 1,450 non-GMO soft and hard wheat strains, doubling the number from previous seasons. The hybridization program has also advanced, with the number of parent plants increasing to 45, selected in the second season. These plants have undergone research at the first-of-its-kind Biotechnology Laboratory in the UAE, which is equipped with advanced smart technology for physiological measurements and molecular analysis to determine the genetic lineage of the selected wheat strains.
Dr Al Tunaiji wrapped up his speech by thanking the Ruler of Sharjah, praising his vision and ongoing commitment to fostering development and sustainability. He highlighted that language cannot fully convey the extent of Sheikh Sultan's contributions to the nation.

Watch: Ship runs off course, hits dock in Egypt's Suez Canal; no injuries reported

A diving vessel briefly ran aground during its northbound transit through Egypt's Suez Canal but was safely refloated within 60 minutes, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said on Saturday. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident that took place on Friday. The site is currently being assessed for some damage, but the structure of the ship, Red Zed 1, is sound, the SCA added. Red Zed 1 is a 217-meter-long, 43-meter-wide diving vessel with a gross tonnage of 41,000 tonnes. It was transiting the canal en route from the Netherlands to Sudan. In a statement, the SCA said that the ship "experienced a sudden steering failure... The swift response prevented a major collision with the ferry dock." Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. Three tugboats, Misr El Gedida, Mosaed 4, and Suez 1, were dispatched and managed to stabilise the vessel. The authority shared a video of the vessel escorted by the three tugboats to the Ballah area and then to the Great Bitter Lakes. Take a look: The video of the incident itself went viral and was shared by media outlets and social media users. Khaleej Times could not verify the authenticity of the clip. The SCA clarified that its pilots aboard managed to steer the vessel parallel to the dock, minimising impact. Supervisors detected the ship's deviation early and immediately notified a ferry that was docking at the site to evacuate passengers. SCA Chairman Osama Rabia stressed that navigation in the Suez Canal was unaffected by the incident, and ferry services across the canal resumed promptly after a backup ferry was deployed. "After temporary repairs and completion of investigations, the vessel can continue its journey," the authority said. The Suez Canal is one of the world's most vital waterways for global shipping and trade. One of the most significant maritime incidents in recent history occurred in the canal on March 23, 2021, when the Ever Given, a 400-meter-long container ship operated by Evergreen Marine, ran aground, blocking one of the world's busiest trade routes for six days. The vessel, which was en route from China to the Netherlands, became lodged sideways across the canal due to high winds and human error, according to investigations. The ship was eventually refloated on March 29 by the SCA with the help of tugboats, dredgers, and international salvage teams.

‘Kibriyaa': Arabic word for grandeur balances pride and humility

Glory and grandeur run through the Arabic word of this week. Kibriyaa goes beyond pride. It suggests majesty and commands reverence, yet invites caution. Like most Arabic words, the seeds of its meaning lie in trilateral root letters – kaf, ba and ra – which generate a number of related names. There is Kabir, meaning great and a name consigned to males; and Takbir, meaning glorifying God, something worshippers do throughout their five daily prayers, particularly communally in the mosque. These related words also reflect the slippery slope from supreme confidence to conceit, with the latter described in Arabic by the stern-sounding istikbar. Because of the magnitude of its meaning, kibriyaa also holds a place in spiritual literature. The Quran establishes the term as divine territory, with a verse from Chapter 45 stating 'wa lahu al-kibriyaa'u fi as-samawati wa al-arđi" (And to Him belongs all grandeur in the heavens and the earth). In turn, the Quran also offers repeated warnings against arrogance, referred to as kibr, a spiritual poison said to erode good character. While preserving its resonant undertones, modern Arabic has also used kibriyaa in more secular contexts. An elderly and dignified person, for instance, may be described as possessing a form of kibriyaa. It is important to note, however, that the term in this case conveys earned gravitas – not pridefulness. That balance between self-respect and self-exaltation – in a region where both dignity and humility are honoured – is what keeps kibriyaa one of the most dynamic Arabic words. Its rich and weighty connotations mean it's not used casually, in pop songs or film titles for instance. It is also a reminder of the nuance of the Arabic language, in which from seemingly simple roots emerge entire philosophies on how to conduct oneself – teaching us what to aspire to, and what to avoid.
