JoJo Siwa Says She Felt Pressured into Coming Out as a Lesbian: 'I Kind of Boxed Myself in'
JoJo Siwa is reflecting on her coming out experience "I kind of boxed myself in," she told the Daily Mail's YOU Magazine in a new interview Siwa is currently dating Chris Hughes, who she met while starring on Celebrity Big Brother Siwa is opening up about her coming out experience. In a new interview with the Daily Mail's YOU Magazine, the Dance Moms alum reflected on previously feeling pressured to come out as a lesbian. "When I came out at 17, I said: 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care [about gender].' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure," Siwa, 22, told the publication. She noted that she felt the pressure came "in a weird way" from "inside the [LGBTQ] community at times." "From people I know, from partners I've had," said Siwa. "You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian', you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid." In 2021, Siwa came out as LGBTQ, but during her appearance on CBB earlier this year, where met now-boyfriend Chris Hughes, she reflected on her sexuality again. "I feel, like, so queer, do you know what I mean?" she told Danny Beard, her costar and a RuPaul's Drag Race UK alum. Added Siwa: "I've always told myself I'm a lesbian, and I think being here I've realized: 'Oh, I'm not a lesbian, I'm queer.' And I think that's really cool." She added that she was "switching letters," referring to the letters in LGBTQ. "I've dropped the L and I've gone to the Q baby! That's what I love about sexuality," said Siwa, to which Beard, 33, responded: "You are Q, honey. And you know that British people love a queue!" is now available in the Apple App Store! Following the end of CBB, Siwa and her then-partner Kath Ebbs, who identifies as non-binary, broke up. One month later, Siwa and Hughes, 32, showcased their friendship, posting snaps from a getaway in Mexico, along with a photo of them cuddling together. On June 2, Siwa confirmed that she and Hughes were dating in an interview with The Guardian. "It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way," the "Karma" singer told the outlet. JoJo Siwa cancels Pride concert
JoJo Siwa has pulled the pin on her appearance at a Pride festival in Chicago. Siwa was scheduled to take the stage on 29 June at Back Lot Bash, a music festival set to coincide with Chicago's Pride weekend. The Dance Moms alum has yet to address disappointed fans herself, although the show's organisers blamed a "scheduling conflict" on her no-show. The Pride cancellation comes after the former child star admitted last week that she felt pressured by past partners and the LGBTQ+ community to define herself as a lesbian. "When I came out at 17, I said, 'I'm pansexual,' because I don't care," she told the Daily Mail. "But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said, 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure. "Where did that pressure come from? In a weird way, I think it came a little bit from inside the community at times. From people I know, from partners I've had." Siwa is now in a blossoming relationship with her Celebrity Big Brother UK cast-mate Chris Hughes. Hughes, a British TV personality who found fame on Love Island, is the first man she's publicly dated since coming out in 2021. This cancellation follows the postponement of Siwa's US tour dates. JoJo announced that news on her tour website last week. "I've got some news that breaks my heart to share. My US tour has to be postponed. I promise I'll be back before you know it to perform for all the beautiful people in the US."

JoJo Siwa says she felt 'forced' to come out as a lesbian
In a new interview with the Daily Mail, JoJo Siwa discussed her new relationship with her Celebrity Big Brother co-star, Chris Hughes, and the world's reaction to her dating a man after coming out as a lesbian. Sign up for the to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment — delivered three times a week straight (well…) to your inbox! Siwa told another contestant on Celebrity Big Brother UK that she felt "queer" was a better fitting label than lesbian as her and Hughes grew closer. Looking back, she clarified how she currently identifies. "When I came out at 17, I said, 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care [about gender].' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said, 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of the pressure." When the interviewer asked her where that pressure came from, she said, "In a weird way, I think it came a little bit from inside the [LGBTQ] community at times. From people I know, from partners I've had. You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian,' you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid." Siwa and Hughes' relationship grew out of an interaction they had on Celebrity Big Brother after Hughes defended her against a homophobic interaction from actor Mickey Rourke. After that, their bond grew closer and blossomed into an on-screen romance that garnered thousands of comments on their relationship for days. Now, the two share photos of themselves cuddling together on vacation and declaring their love for one another. Some find her relationship hard to believe due to her over-the-top antics and her most recent attempt to shed the "child star" label. After coming out in 2021, she said she felt that her former television network, Nickelodeon, "made the conscious choice to forget about [her]," and she redirected her focus to making music. In 2024, Siwa released her song, "Karma," and called herself the "CEO of gay pop." She said during the interview that this era of her life was all "nonsense." Siwa admitted that she "faked being naughty for a year" and "faked that I was screwing people left and right," saying she "wanted attention." After reflecting on the most pivotal moments of her career and what she's had to deal with, Siwa tells the Daily Mail that she would do everything the same way again if given the chance. "I've already thought about it, and I'm beyond happy with it all. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't change a thing. Really. Zero. I would change nothing," she said.
