Nirvana Nokwe 'prioritising music' after graduation

TimesLIVE4 days ago

Nirvana Nokwe is gearing up to make waves in the music scene after recently graduating from the Academy of Sound Engineering.
While studying in the television and screen arts division when she first enrolled, Nokwe also got to engage with students who did music.
'It was a beautiful intersection between my music and my filmmaking work. I was studying to be behind the camera. I just started creating really strong relationships with people in the sound division and they called me in to be a part of their projects. I didn't exist in just one space,' she told TshisaLIVE.
She will soon release a single called Mama with Master KG and Goon Flavour as they launch their upcoming EP.
'It's been so amazing collaborating with them. They featured me on one of their songs. This song is such a beautiful compliment to what's happening in my life. Mama is a song that's so close to my heart, especially now, because books before boys — because boys bring babies.
'This song is about me thanking uMama for supporting me and helping me keep focused, not me giving my life, faith, and destiny away to boys, now that I'm graduating. I'm just so grateful to my mother. My mother really taught me to prioritise myself before love and is always giving me advice about love and dating. She's always telling me to have a life and have a strong connection with God first.'
While Nokwe is used to dominating the screens, she'll soon be on the airwaves as she returns to her first love.
'I am really prioritising my music this year. I'm really putting in a lot of effort into music, and working on my own stuff.'
Beyond the limelight, Nokwe wears many hats.
In 2024 she launched the Connect Supper Club, which provides a platform for inspiring discussions, networking and collaboration, paired with fine dining and a sophisticated ambience.

Sbonakaliso Mazibuko to give aspiring actors a shot at stardom

Smoke & Mirrors actor Sbonakaliso Mazibuko has started an acting school. Sbonakaliso, known for his roles on Amalanga Awafani, Uzalo and Durban Gen, has opened the Shogazi Academy in Durban to mentor aspiring actors. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, the 40-year-old said he is offering a free acting course with a level five certificate upon successful completion, focusing on Durban-based aspiring actors. 'The programme started with online auditions in June and aims to mentor 15 young talents over 11 months. The programme, named Durban Ten Actors in a previous initiative, intends to give young actors an opportunity to act in a stage play at the Stable Theatre in Durban, potentially exposing them to casting agencies and production houses,' he said. 'After some time, the aspiring actors will receive their monthly stipend. I'm in the final stage to conclude with the funders on how we'll operate in this academy. I'm excited about this initiative, as someone elsewhere played a huge role in the person I am today.' The Shogazi Academy mentorship includes online auditions. Sbonakaliso sees this as a way to give back to the community and believes acting talents need to be discovered and nurtured.
