Sbonakaliso Mazibuko to give aspiring actors a shot at stardom

TimesLIVEa day ago

e.tv's Smoke & Mirrors actor Sbonakaliso Mazibuko has started an acting school.
Sbonakaliso, known for his roles on Amalanga Awafani, Uzalo and Durban Gen, has opened the Shogazi Academy in Durban to mentor aspiring actors.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, the 40-year-old said he is offering a free acting course with a level five certificate upon successful completion, focusing on Durban-based aspiring actors.
'The programme started with online auditions in June and aims to mentor 15 young talents over 11 months. The programme, named Durban Ten Actors in a previous initiative, intends to give young actors an opportunity to act in a stage play at the Stable Theatre in Durban, potentially exposing them to casting agencies and production houses,' he said.
'After some time, the aspiring actors will receive their monthly stipend. I'm in the final stage to conclude with the funders on how we'll operate in this academy. I'm excited about this initiative, as someone elsewhere played a huge role in the person I am today.'
The Shogazi Academy mentorship includes online auditions. Sbonakaliso sees this as a way to give back to the community and believes acting talents need to be discovered and nurtured.

DJ Sabby's new single 'Shelele' is a banger

DJ Sabby is back and he's bringing the heat with his latest single, Shelele, a high-energy anthem that not only showcases rising local talent but also pays tribute to the unstoppable spirit of Mzansi's everyday heroes. The new track features a powerhouse line-up including Loki, LMK, Obren, Ndaba Ndaba and Khalipha. The song bursts with vibrant rhythms and a celebratory tone, perfectly matched by a dynamic music video that's as much a love letter to South African townships as it is a visual feast. 'This song is about celebrating every success, no matter how big or small,' DJ Sabby told TshisaLIVE. 'It's a reminder that every win from starting a business to passing an exam is worth shouting about.' Shelele is more than just a party starter; it's a heartfelt ode to community and resilience.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: And then there were 27

The race for the coveted Hollywoodbets Durban July 2025 title has taken a dramatic turn with the withdrawal of SA Derby winner Legend Of Arthur, leaving only 27 contenders still in the hunt for a spot in the R5 million Grade 1 event at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 6 July. The final field will comprise a maximum of 18 runners plus two reserves. Legend Of Arthur, trained by Sean Tarry and previously seen as a strong Durban July hopeful, was scratched due to a medical issue. The three-year-old was set to be the backup ride for champion South African jockey Richard Fourie. This latest development leaves Tarry, a two-time Durban July-winning trainer (with Pomodoro in 2012 and Heavy Metal in 2013), with just one possible runner in the shape of Litigation. All eyes are now on Justin Snaith's highly regarded colt Eight On Eighteen, whose participation remains uncertain. Conflicting reports have circulated in recent days regarding his fitness and intended entry. Smiso Shezi teams up with Blaq Major

For the past two years Smiso Shezi has been living in New York, where he was able to realise his dream and develop his talent in music. Smiso has returned to Durban to further pursue his dream of making good music. His latest single, iBill, features Blaq Major, DM Keey and Luvintage. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Simiso said: ' iBill doesn't talk about the struggle but rather talks about the time when hard work has paid off. Time and time again people put in the required work and effort, but when they reach the summit, they don't know how to be happy,' he said. ' iBill reminds you about enjoying yourself and how it feels to enjoy the finer things in life, basking under the African sun. The track talks about reaching out to your friends for a get together, to have fun and enjoy living. Gone are the days of tears. It is time to celebrate.'
