The real-world energy consumption adjustment factor accounts for the differences between laboratory testing and actual driving conditions.
The research emphasises the crucial role of India's power grid composition in the overall
emissions reduction potential
of BEVs. Variations in the grid mix and real-world driving conditions can lead to significant fluctuations in lifecycle emissions.
Why adopt BEVs?
Accurate modeling and analysis are crucial for capturing the true advantages of BEVs in terms of emissions reduction. The study's findings highlight the urgency of adopting BEVs as a critical step towards achieving broader climate and sustainability goals.
The study warns against delaying BEV adoption in anticipation of a cleaner grid. It underscores that ICE vehicles purchased today will remain on the road for many years, contributing to cumulative emissions.

Speaking at the discussion organised under the banner of PanIIT Alumni Leadership Series (PALS), a voluntary initiative by IIT alumni, on the topic 'Engineering education for a new era', V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, said toppers should be encouraged to opt for disciplines other than computer sciences, since the country needs bright minds in other disciplines too. Stating that the country needs administrators who are tech savvy policy makers, he said engineering graduates should also take up civil service. KN Satyanarayana, director, IIT Tirupati stressed the country needs more engineers in the core fields at present. 'There is a big vacuum in the battery, semiconductor sectors which are the sunrise sectors. A chemical engineer, or a material scientist is the need of the hour,' said Satyanarayana. Shreepad Karmalkar, director, IIT Bhubaneswar said many students opt for computer science over core engineering courses due to the parity in pay packages at entry levels. 'This herd mentality needs to be get rid of,' he added. BS Murty, director, IIT Hyderabad appealed to the youth to put the country first over their personal aspirations. Venkappayya R Desai, director, IIT Dharwad urged students to use their creativity in making society a better place to live in. The panelists also shared their vision on how engineering education must evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century, stressing the need for interdisciplinary learning, integration of emerging technologies like AI and sustainability, academia-industry collaborations, and improving access and inclusivity for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, CN Chandrasekaran, chairperson of PALS, also spoke.

In a major development aimed at addressing the escalating water crisis, the Punjab State Farmers' & Farm Workers' Commission (PSFFWC) has launched a science-driven initiative to study and conserve water resources in the state. This comes after a comprehensive report commissioned from the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, was presented to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and a six-member legislative committee — formed under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann — in 2021. Acknowledging the significance of the report, the committee has now tasked the PSFFWC to expand the study to micro-level, employing advanced techniques like carbon dating, isotope technologies, and seepage pattern analysis. To galvanise expert insights, the PSFFWC also hosted two back-to-back workshops — first, featuring a team from the University of California, USA, led by Sharron Elizabeth Benes and Dr G S Brar; and the second involving water experts from the Punjab Agricultural University, the Panjab University, and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare. On Friday, PSFFWC chairman Professor Sukhpal Singh convened a high-level meeting, which was attended by eminent scientists including IIT Ropar's Pushpendra Pal Singh (Dean) and Sarbjot Kaur (Radioactive Tools Expert), IIT Mandi's Harshad Kulkarni and Ranjeet K Jha, NIH Roorkee Scientist-E Gopal Krishan, and Horticulture Department's former director Dr Gurkanwal Singh. The session, coordinated by PSFFWC's administrative officer-cum-secretary Ranjodh Singh Bains, focused on a 15-point agenda, addressing immediate and long-term water management challenges. Key recommendations included advanced isotopic studies and carbon dating to track groundwater depletion, heliborne surveys to identify paleo-channels for aquifer recharge, feasibility studies for a 5-billion cubic metres (BCM) reservoir on Ujh river, scientific aquifer characterisation to establish sustainable extraction limits, use of salt-tolerant and heavy metal-absorbing crops including bamboo species, revival of traditional water bodies and wells for recharge, and flood-resilient agricultural strategies. 'These insights would underpin a state-wide Water Conservation Mission involving top research institutions,' Bains said. The participating institutions — IIT Ropar, IIT Mandi, and NIH Roorkee — gave in-principle approval for collaboration, while a consortium memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed soon, with the PSFFWC to operationalise a comprehensive state-level project focused on groundwater sustainability and pollution prevention. Expressing confidence in the consortium's potential, PSFFWC chairman Sukhpal Singh said: 'This collaboration represents a turning point. With the collective expertise of our scientists and the commission's policy platform, we are poised to deliver transformative solutions to Punjab's water challenges. This initiative is expected to safeguard Punjab's agricultural future, and elevate its stand on the global stage as a model for sustainable water management.'

Lucknow: When RBI governor, Sanjay Malhotra, returns to his alma mater, IIT-Kanpur, on June 23 to address the premier institute's 58th convocation at its sprawling auditorium, the event will mark the institute's memorable journey from its humble beginnings. The event saw 66 members of the institute's first graduating class conferred the BTech degrees. Dr PK Kelkar, founder director of IIT-K, presided over the function and gave a report on the growth and prospects of the institute. Among the many speeches on the occasion, Kelkar's was the most memorable. IIT-K has come a long way since its inception in 1959. From its humble beginnings in a borrowed room at Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, it has grown to become a premier institution, now situated on a sprawling 420-hectare campus located on the Grand Trunk Road, around 15km west of Kanpur city. Land for the institute was gifted by the govt of Uttar Pradesh in 1960 and, by March 1963, it had shifted to its current location. Today, IIT-Kanpur is renowned for its academic excellence, research, and innovation. A visit to the campus back then would have revealed a serene landscape featuring standing crops, acacia woods, a picturesque line of stately mango trees, flocks of peafowl roaming freely, and a quintessential Indian countryside scene. This idyllic setting made a perfect blend of natural beauty and rustic charm. The campus is designed with a focus on environmental freedom, featuring halls of residence, faculty and staff houses, and community buildings. The institute's inaugural batch, the Class of 65, produced some illustrious technocrats and business honchos in the country like Abhay Bhushan, a computer scientist who has been a major contributor to the development of the internet TCP/IP architecture and is the author of the File Transfer Protocol, Suresh Pandey (former director, Bokaro Steel Plant), and Vinay Kumar Modi (Director of Modi Industries Limited). The batch members recall how they departed from the campus in May 1965 and were waiting to hear when the convocation would be held. Finally, they received invitations by India Post. By then many batchmates had left for studies abroad and some of the ones in India could not attend because of work or personal issues. A few of them, though, did make it to Kanpur to receive their degrees. IIT-K made arrangements for them to be picked up at the railway station and they were lodged at the Visitors' Hostel. Abhay Bhushan, chairman of Asquare Inc and part of IIT-K's 1965 batch, reminisces: "The convocation was planned for the afternoon, from 3pm to 5.30pm. We, the graduating students, were asked to arrive by 1.30pm to collect our gowns and caps and to get instructions on walking in the procession. In all, 67 BTech and 5 PhD degrees were awarded." "During the convocation, several speeches were given. Of note was Dr Kelkar's speech where he recalled what we, as the pioneer batch, had been through and how we were better educated to handle whatever our profession and life may have to offer. He said that the faith that they have shown in the future of the institute has been a real source of inspiration," Bhushan said. The Class of 1965 gifted IIT-K Rs 2.5 crore during its Diamond Jubilee Reunion celebrations in March. The batch pledged this amount towards creating a "Pioneering Research and Innovation Award" at the institute. Talking to TOI, the institute's present director, Professor Manindra Agrawal, said: "This year, we are celebrating the 58th convocation. Over the years, the institute has come a long way in contributing to the nation's technology and innovation landscape, as well as shaping bright minds. As an alumnus myself, every convocation here is nostalgic."
