Dy CM KV Singh Deo meets ex-UK PM Tony Blair, signs pact on sustainable energy solutions

BHUBANESWAR: Deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo on Thursday met former prime minister of the United Kingdom and executive chairman of Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), Tony Blair, in New Delhi and discussed collaborations for implementing sustainable energy solutions in Odisha. The state government signed a tripartite letter of intent (LoI) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and TBI. As per the LoI, Odisha will take the leadership for setting up a community of practice for energy ministers from various states of India. A conference of energy ministers of all the states is scheduled to be held in Odisha later this year. Praising Odisha for pioneering reforms in the electricity sector, Blair said the state has attracted significant investments in renewable energy in the last one year. He also noted that Odisha faces typical challenges because of mineral-based industries and thermal power plants, and expressed readiness for continued collaboration with the state to accelerate sustainable energy solutions. Singh Deo reiterated Odisha's commitment to a low carbon future and achieving net zero. The state will adopt a strategic approach aligned to best international standards, he said. The issue of distress migration, particularly from the western parts of Odisha was also discussed in the meeting. The TBI has supported the state government in formulating the artificial intelligence (AI) policy which has recently been approved by the cabinet. Country director of TBI, Vivek Agarwal, dean IIT-Kanpur Prof Sachidanand Tripathy and additional secretary in Energy department Debidutta Tripathy signed the agreement.

Professor Suman Chakraborty appointed Director of IIT Kharagpur

Professor Suman Chakraborty, institute chair professor in the Mechanical Engineering department, was appointed Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur on Thursday (June 19, 2025). His appointment will end after a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post. On December 31 last year, Professor Amit Patra, Director of IIT, Benaras Hindu University, had taken additional charge as the interim Director of IIT Kharagpur until the regular incumbent took over. Professor Chakraborty is a former student of Jadavpur University in Kolkata as well as of the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Currently a J.C. Bose National Fellow, he is also a visiting lecturer at Stanford University in the United States. His illustrious career as a scientist is centred around developing several 'affordable, simple-to-execute, and innovative diagnostic solutions' related to common clinical challenges like anaemia, cancer, COVID-19, tuberculosis etc. 'I sincerely appreciate the steadfast support of our IIT family and well-wishers. I eagerly anticipate our shared journey toward cultural transformation, innovation, and excellence as we work together to position our institute among the world's leading academic institutions,' Professor Chakraborty told The Hindu. Earlier this year, he was awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In his long career, Professor Chakraborty has been involved in the development of clinical diagnostic technologies like Covirap, a rapid COVID-19 detection test kit that was granted a U.S. patent for its rapid nucleic acid testing technology using DNA-RNA samples. He has also developed technologies that are currently available in the market commercially, like PrepapQR, a home test to accurately test vaginal Ph, and HemoQR, a simplified anaemia screening test.

PM Modi Welcomes QS World Rankings 2026 After Indian Universities Make Significant Advancements

QS World Rankings 2026: IIT Delhi has notably improved, moving up 27 positions to achieve the 123rd rank, a considerable leap from last year's 150th place. QS World Rankings 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed his approval of the QS World University Rankings 2026, highlighting significant advancements made by Indian institutes this year. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has notably improved, moving up 27 positions to achieve the 123rd rank, a considerable leap from last year's 150th place. 'The QS World University 2026 Rankings bring great news for our education sector. Our Government is committed to furthering research and innovation ecosystems for the benefit of India's youth," the prime minister posted on X. A total of 54 Higher Educational Institutions from India have been featured in the QS World University 2026 Rankings, marking a new high for the country, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced. The number of Indian universities in these rankings has increased from just 11 in 2014 to 54 in the latest list, he posted on X. This is a 390 per cent increase over the past decade. Pradhan expressed confidence that with the National Education Policy's focus on research, innovation, and internationalisation, even more Indian higher education institutions will achieve global excellence in the future. He added that India boasts the fastest-growing education system among G20 countries and ranks fourth in representation, following the US, UK, and China. Meanwhile, as per the QS rankings 2026, IIT Bombay slipped 11 places to 129th. In 2025, it was ranked 118th However, it remains the second-best ranked Indian institution globally. IIT Madras recorded one of the most dramatic improvements in 2026 – leaping 47 places to reach the 180th spot. This is the first time it has entered the global top 200. Muhilraj, a student who has been under the guidance of IGNITTE teaching club of National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T), has gained admission in the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering course at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. In April, Mr. Muhilraj, a student of Arignar Anna Government Higher Secondary School at Pachaperumalpatti village, Thuraiyur, had secured admission into NIT Silchar in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE) through JEE Mains 2024, scoring 91.23 percentile. According to an official release, he was encouraged to attempt the JEE Advanced to try for admission into Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with extra coaching from IGNITTE. With the help of IGNITTE mentors and special classes during the vacation, Muhilraj qualified for JEE Advanced by securing 95.88 percentile in this year's JEE Mains and achieved an All India Rank of 1751, earning him a seat in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras. IGNITTE is a team of NIT-T students who train economically disadvantaged students for competitive entrance exams and help them analyse career opportunities. Over 400 senior school-goers participate annually in the screening tests organised in collaboration with the district administration of Tiruchi and Tirunelveli. At the end of the two-day process, which includes a written test followed by a personal interview, only 20 students from each district have been selected for the coaching programme.
