Think beyond computer science engineering: IIT panel

CHENNAI: Students and their parents should get rid of the herd mentality of choosing computer science engineering courses over other streams, said directors of five IITs at a panel discussion organised on the IIT Madras campus here on Friday.
Speaking at the discussion organised under the banner of PanIIT Alumni Leadership Series (PALS), a voluntary initiative by IIT alumni, on the topic 'Engineering education for a new era', V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, said toppers should be encouraged to opt for disciplines other than computer sciences, since the country needs bright minds in other disciplines too.
Stating that the country needs administrators who are tech savvy policy makers, he said engineering graduates should also take up civil service.
KN Satyanarayana, director, IIT Tirupati stressed the country needs more engineers in the core fields at present. 'There is a big vacuum in the battery, semiconductor sectors which are the sunrise sectors. A chemical engineer, or a material scientist is the need of the hour,' said Satyanarayana.
Shreepad Karmalkar, director, IIT Bhubaneswar said many students opt for computer science over core engineering courses due to the parity in pay packages at entry levels. 'This herd mentality needs to be get rid of,' he added.
BS Murty, director, IIT Hyderabad appealed to the youth to put the country first over their personal aspirations. Venkappayya R Desai, director, IIT Dharwad urged students to use their creativity in making society a better place to live in.
The panelists also shared their vision on how engineering education must evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century, stressing the need for interdisciplinary learning, integration of emerging technologies like AI and sustainability, academia-industry collaborations, and improving access and inclusivity for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, CN Chandrasekaran, chairperson of PALS, also spoke.

The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position."At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. QS Rankings 2026: The QS World University Rankings, released on Thursday featured the best performing institutions around the world. A total of 54 Indian institutions made it to the QS Global Rankings with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi as the best performing Indian institution. The Sustainability Score evaluates how well an institution contributes to areas such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, student well-being, transparency, and ethical decision-making. Here are the top 10 Indian institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2026 with their sustainability scores: The best performing Indian institute is the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi with an overall rank of 123 among the top institutions around the world. IIT, Delhi earned a sustainability score of 79.9. The second Indian institution is the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) with an overall 129 rank. IIT, Bombay earned a sustainability score of 75.2. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) with an overall 180th position, earned a sustainability score of 73. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) secured the 215th position overall, earning a sustainability score of 77.8. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore acquired 219 rank among the top institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2025 with a sustainability score of 66.3. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) secured an overall rank of 222, earning a sustainability score of 74.7. University of Delhi got an overall rank of 328 and a sustainability score of 71.2. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) achieved the lowest sustainability score of 43 among the top 10 Indian institutions in QS World University Rankings 2026, with an overall rank of 334. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) with an overall rank of 339 earned a sustainability score of 57.5. Anna University, Chennai at 465th rank achieved a sustainability score of 64.5. A total of eight Indian universities debuted in the QS Global University Rankings this year, reflecting a positive growth in the overall quality of higher education institutions of the country.

IIT-Kanpur set to host 58th convocation on June 23, RBI guv Sanjay Malhotra to be chief guest

Lucknow: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is set to host its 58th convocation ceremony on Monday to celebrate the academic achievements of its graduating students as they begin a new phase of their journey. The momentous occasion will be graced by RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra, an IIT-Kanpur alumnus, as the chief guest. The chairperson, Board of Governors (BoG), IIT- Kanpur, and Prof. Manindra Agrawal, director, IIT-K, will preside over the ceremony. Malhotra completed his bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from IIT-K in 1989. He began his career as a bureaucrat in 2000 and held key roles across various ministries in Rajasthan and at the national level, including international experience with UNIDO. He served as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power and also served as the Chairman and MD of REC. In December 2024, he was appointed Governor of the RBI. The ceremony is being held in two sessions to ensure that all the graduating students can participate in this celebration of their academic accomplishments. The graduating students include 269 PhD recipients, 29 from MTech-PhD (Joint Degree), 2 from MDes-PhD (Joint Degree), 2 MS (by Research)-PhD (Joint Degree), 480 MTech recipients, 874 BTech and 204 BS recipients.
