Bihar elections: CM Nitish Kumar hikes pension scheme to Rs 1100; move to benefit over 1 crore in state

on Saturday announced a significant hike in the state's Social Security Pension Scheme, increasing the monthly pension amount from Rs 400 to Rs 1100 for elderly citizens, persons with disabilities, and widowed women.
Taking to X, the CM said, "I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, disabled and widowed women will now get a pension of Rs 1100 instead of Rs 400 every month. All the beneficiaries will get a pension at the increased rate from the month of July. It will be ensured that this amount is sent to the account of all the beneficiaries on the 10th of the month. This will help 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries a lot…"
The revised pension scheme will take effect from July, and the state government has assured timely direct transfers to beneficiaries' bank accounts every month.
The announcement comes just months ahead of the crucial Bihar assembly elections. Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the opposition alliance, led by Tejashwi Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is joined by the Congress.

He said that poor performance in education quality, maternal and infant mortality rates, employment generation, weak scores on women empowerment, infrastructure, per capita income, alarming fiscal indicators, including debt management, interest payment ratio, fiscal deficit, severe deficiencies in electricity access, railway density, healthcare services, and school teacher ratios. He also said that the weak judicial efficiency, e-governance, investment environment, and environmental metrics are also poor, including air quality and renewable energy adoption. 'Bihar is now behind even Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh — states it once competed with. The figures speak for themselves, and corruption and poor governance are to blame,' Mishra said. He alleged that the government's much-publicised development narrative is hollow and lacks substance on the ground. Mishra added that even the Union government data contradicts the NDA's claims of progress. 'Bihar is in deep crisis, socially, economically, and administratively. The only way out is a change in government and a policy revolution,' he concluded. This marks a major strategic move by the Congress to build a data-backed campaign against the NDA ahead of the Assembly elections. With just four months to go, the party appears poised to corner the ruling alliance on its development record, particularly using central and global institutional reports as ammunition.

CBI Finds Losses Over Rs 4,200 Crore In JNPA Dredging Project Corruption Case

New Delhi: Financial losses of over Rs 4,200 crore have been flagged by the CBI in a corruption case linked to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority dredging project, NDTV Profit reported. The case has exposed deep-rooted corruption, inflated costs, and rigged contracts. A huge network of criminal conspiracy involved manipulated tenders, suppressed competition, and collusion between officials and private firms. The investigation centred around senior officials of JNPA and executives from Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE). It found a pattern of systemic irregularities and abuse of authority. The CBI's complaint highlighted two main instances of over-dredging that led to wrongful losses of Rs 365.90 crore in Phase-I and Rs 438 crore in Phase-II. These figures are presented as key findings that initially surfaced during the enquiry. However, the investigation goes much deeper. The CBI document explicitly notes that these losses are part of a broader web of financial misconduct and criminal conspiracy, which includes inflated estimates, tender manipulation, and rigged bidding processes. Some of the most serious findings were: Rs 1,163 crore was added to the project cost due to the choice of a deeper 15-meter vessel draft (Option II) over the originally proposed 14-meter draft (Option I), without reassessment or justification. A Rs 557 crore loss resulted from the adoption of composite dredging rates for hard and weathered rock, along with unnecessary pretreatment costs, instead of using differential rates. The violation of PIANC (Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses) guidelines led to Rs 964 crore in losses due to unauthorized channel widening in both phases. An additional Rs 430 crore was paid for over-dredging during Phase-II, despite no supporting evidence of required depth. Sources told NDTV Profit that CBI officials said all accused, including former JNPA Chief Manager Sunil Kumar Madabhavi and Devdutt Bose of TCE, will be summoned for questioning. "The investigation is ongoing, with further financial and criminal liabilities likely to emerge," a source added.

Punjab to amend Beggary Act to make stricter enforcement

Agency: PTI Chandigarh, Jun 21 (PTI) Punjab Women and Child Development Minister Baljit Kaur on Saturday said the government will make amendments to the Beggary Act to launch a stricter crackdown on racketeers. The amendments to the Punjab Prevention of Beggary Act, 1971, will carry heavy penalties against racketeers, guardians, or parents found forcing children to beg at traffic lights and other intersections, she said. Kaur said the state will form special teams to identify and act against those operating these rackets and rescue and rehabilitate children. The minister said that since July 2024, under the Jeevanjot project, 286 children have been rescued. She also said that this year, a pilot project 'Smile' will be launched in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, SAS Nagar, and Bathinda. Under the initiative, child beggars will be identified, and their families will be tracked through DNA tests, she said.
