CBI Finds Losses Over Rs 4,200 Crore In JNPA Dredging Project Corruption Case

Financial losses of over Rs 4,200 crore have been flagged by the CBI in a corruption case linked to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority dredging project, NDTV Profit reported. The case has exposed deep-rooted corruption, inflated costs, and rigged contracts.
A huge network of criminal conspiracy involved manipulated tenders, suppressed competition, and collusion between officials and private firms.
The investigation centred around senior officials of JNPA and executives from Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE). It found a pattern of systemic irregularities and abuse of authority.
The CBI's complaint highlighted two main instances of over-dredging that led to wrongful losses of Rs 365.90 crore in Phase-I and Rs 438 crore in Phase-II. These figures are presented as key findings that initially surfaced during the enquiry.
However, the investigation goes much deeper. The CBI document explicitly notes that these losses are part of a broader web of financial misconduct and criminal conspiracy, which includes inflated estimates, tender manipulation, and rigged bidding processes.
Some of the most serious findings were:
Rs 1,163 crore was added to the project cost due to the choice of a deeper 15-meter vessel draft (Option II) over the originally proposed 14-meter draft (Option I), without reassessment or justification.
A Rs 557 crore loss resulted from the adoption of composite dredging rates for hard and weathered rock, along with unnecessary pretreatment costs, instead of using differential rates.
The violation of PIANC (Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses) guidelines led to Rs 964 crore in losses due to unauthorized channel widening in both phases.
An additional Rs 430 crore was paid for over-dredging during Phase-II, despite no supporting evidence of required depth.
Sources told NDTV Profit that CBI officials said all accused, including former JNPA Chief Manager Sunil Kumar Madabhavi and Devdutt Bose of TCE, will be summoned for questioning.
"The investigation is ongoing, with further financial and criminal liabilities likely to emerge," a source added.

ACB arrests AMC estate inspector in disproportionate assets case
The Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested an estate inspector of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for alleged possession of disproportionate assets (DA) to the tune of Rs 3.07 crore, according to a statement. The ACB said that the period of investigation ranged between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2022, during which the officer had allegedly used unlawful means to accumulate disproportionate assets. The investigation is being carried out by ACB Police Inspector VD Chaudhary. Further probe into the matter is underway.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a man from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, in a case involving the sexual assault of minors and the possession and circulation of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).The CBI registered the suo moto case on 17 June 2025, based on grave allegations against the accused. These include the creation, collection, storage, and online sharing of CSAM depicting minors in explicit and abusive 19 June 2025, the agency conducted searches on the accused's home in Mathura. During the search, officials seized several electronic devices containing objectionable content. Forensic analysis of these devices revealed a large amount of CSAM in the form of images and videos. The material was cross-verified with INTERPOL's International Child Sexual Exploitation Database and Cyber Tipline Reports (CTRs) generated by Google. These reports were shared with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home investigation uncovered disturbing evidence. According to officials, the digital content showed minors being raped, sexually assaulted, harassed, and threatened. The accused had also taken obscene photographs of the victims. All these incidents reportedly took place in CBI identified, located, and rescued the minors shown in the videos and images. Gujarat: 40-km detour for Chhota Udepur commuters after Bharaj river diversion closed
The commute to and from the tribal district Chhota Udepur would now require a detour of an additional 40 kilometers after the district administration ordered the closure of a makeshift diversion constructed on the Bharaj river and witnessed a partial washout due to heavy rains. The diversion made on the riverbed by making culverts in the riverpath has been the only connection for vehicular traffic to the tribal district after the dilapidated main bridge on NH56, over the river, collapsed in August 2024 due to heavy rains. On Saturday, District Collector Gargi Jain and officials of the district police department rushed to the spot as the diversion was washed out due to heavy rain. The diversion was ordered to be closed until the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) examined the same for structural stability. Instead, vehicular traffic was directed to take the old highway connecting Chhota Udepur to Vadodara, which means a detour of 40 km. Sharing more details, Jain said, 'The diversion that was created on the Bharaj bridge has shown several cracks. The NHAI is conducting a structural stability analysis and once the report is received, we will decide based on the strength of the structure assessed if it should be opened to traffic. For now, we are closing the diversion'. 'There is an old diversion road that can be used by motorists in the interim. We will decide after the NHAI report what should be done,' the district collector added. The Bharaj bridge has been a contentious issue since July 2023, when it was damaged due to flooding after water was released from the Sukhi dam. The bridge was subsequently closed for a long time. In August 2024, a major part of the dilapidated bridge had collapsed during the monsoon. The NHAI is currently working on constructing a new bridge over the river, the foundation stone for which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit on May 26 this year. The new bridge is estimated to be built at a cost of Rs 26 crore.
