World's 50 best restaurants 2025: Lima's Maido takes the crown
Representational image
The 2025 list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants just dropped, and let's just say—it was a big night in Turin, Italy.
Maido, a Japanese-Peruvian hotspot in Lima, Peru, officially snagged the No.
1 spot, becoming the second restaurant from Lima to ever top the list. Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, who's been blending Japanese precision with bold Peruvian flavors, gave a heartfelt shoutout to something we don't talk about enough in the food world—human sustainability.
'We talk a lot about sustainability of the environment, but we rarely talk about human sustainability,' Mitsuhura Tsumura, Maido's chef, told NYTimes.
'I think this industry can be an example of how we can bring people together with the power of food.'
In U.S. news, Atomix in NYC dropped to No. 12 (it was No. 6 last year) but still earned bragging rights after winning a James Beard award for hospitality earlier this week. Other American spots on the extended top 100 include SingleThread in California (No. 80), Le Bernardin (No. 90), Atelier Crenn (No. 96), and César (No. 98).

Meanwhile, Cosme and Smyth sadly didn't make the cut this time.
Spain's grill master Asador Etxebarri held strong at No. 2, while Mexico City's Quintonil, Madrid's edgy DiverXO, and Copenhagen's futuristic Alchemist rounded out the top five.
The list this year leaned further away from old-school European fine dining and spotlighted places doing wild, creative things with hyperlocal ingredients and eye-popping presentation.
A big surprise came from Bangkok's Potong, which debuted at No. 13, and its chef, Pichaya Soontornyanakij, won the 'World's Best Female Chef' award—a title that's been stirring up controversy for years.
The World's 50 Best list is voted on by 1,100 'gastronomic experts,' many of whom are chefs, PR folks, or food writers, the media outlet reported.
Here is the list of top 50 restaurants

Interestingly, the World's Best Restaurant is in Peru, offering a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. Gaggan, in Bangkok, by famed Chef Gaggan Anand, has been named the 6th Best Restaurant in the World and the Best Restaurant in Asia 2025. This is the restaurant's third consecutive year on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. Appreciating the restaurant, the World's 50 Best said, "Music, colours and creativity combine on the menu, which is anchored in progressive Indian, with French, Thai and Japanese influences. From using emojis to represent each of the courses to pushing diners to eat with their hands or even lick the plate, chef Gaggan Anand wants to disrupt and reinvent the traditional fine-dining experience." Tresind Studio in Dubai, helmed by Chef Himanshu Saini, became the 27th Best Restaurant in the World and The Best Restaurant in the Middle East 2025. The restaurant is led by chef Mitsuharu 'Micha' Tsumura and the name 'Maido' refers to a Japanese phrase used to greet people. It's the first thing diners hear when stepping into the restaurant. "Maido increasingly references ingredients and traditions from the vast Peruvian Amazon, with courses like the miniature jaune parcel of pork jowl and palm heart that nods to a rainforest staple, snacks of 'ham' made from sustainable paiche fish, and yucca served with Amazonian beans," the World's 50 Best notes. Diana Penty opens up on ‘Chhaava' success, says 'I'm a huge critic of my own work'
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Actor Diana Penty , who portrayed Mughal princess Zinat-un-Nissa Begum in the blockbuster 'Chhaava', says she welcomes both praise and criticism. The historical action drama, which stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, grossed over Rs 600 crore at the Indian box office, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. Despite its commercial success, 'Chhaava' also attracted backlash for its portrayal of certain historical events. "I'm a huge critic of my own work' Speaking about the mixed reactions, Diana told PTI, 'It's important to have both sides so that actors or makers can do better next time. I'm a huge critic of my own work.' 02:37 Detective Sherdil Trailer: Diljit Dosanjh, Diana Penty, Boman Irani, Chunky Panday and Banita Sandhu Starrer Detective Sherdil Official Trailer Diana Penty revealed that her role required minimal dialogue, which was a new challenge for her. 'There was so much power in the silences, and that's not easy to do,' she said. The actor focused on expressing emotions through subtle gestures and internalized feelings—something she hadn't done before. While some praised her nuanced portrayal, others were less convinced. Still, she found the experience enriching: 'I looked at the positive side of it.' Other projects On the professional front, Diana Penty will be next seen in the upcoming movie 'Detective Sherdil', which is directed by Ravi Chhabriya and starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The movie is scripted by Sagar Bajaj, Ravi Chhabriya and Ali Abbas Zafar. On the other hand, Diana Penty also played a pivotal role in 'Azaad' which earned a decent 3 star rating from ETimes with our official review reading, "'Azaad' struggles to maintain consistent tension. The film underutilizes the potential of depicting the British officers' brutality, which could have heightened audience investment in Govind's climactic horse-riding challenge. Director Abhishek Kapoor's restrained approach results in a film that feels partially realized, missing its full potential. While 'Azaad' has moments of grandeur, it is overshadowed by an overall lack of emotional and narrative payoff. It is a grand spectacle with noble intentions but leaves a muted impression."
