World's 50 best restaurants 2025: Lima's Maido takes the crown

Representational image The 2025 list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants just dropped, and let's just say—it was a big night in Turin, Italy. Maido, a Japanese-Peruvian hotspot in Lima, Peru, officially snagged the No. 1 spot, becoming the second restaurant from Lima to ever top the list. Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, who's been blending Japanese precision with bold Peruvian flavors, gave a heartfelt shoutout to something we don't talk about enough in the food world—human sustainability. 'We talk a lot about sustainability of the environment, but we rarely talk about human sustainability,' Mitsuhura Tsumura, Maido's chef, told NYTimes. 'I think this industry can be an example of how we can bring people together with the power of food.' In U.S. news, Atomix in NYC dropped to No. 12 (it was No. 6 last year) but still earned bragging rights after winning a James Beard award for hospitality earlier this week. Other American spots on the extended top 100 include SingleThread in California (No. 80), Le Bernardin (No. 90), Atelier Crenn (No. 96), and César (No. 98). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Spain's grill master Asador Etxebarri held strong at No. 2, while Mexico City's Quintonil, Madrid's edgy DiverXO, and Copenhagen's futuristic Alchemist rounded out the top five. The list this year leaned further away from old-school European fine dining and spotlighted places doing wild, creative things with hyperlocal ingredients and eye-popping presentation. A big surprise came from Bangkok's Potong, which debuted at No. 13, and its chef, Pichaya Soontornyanakij, won the 'World's Best Female Chef' award—a title that's been stirring up controversy for years. The World's 50 Best list is voted on by 1,100 'gastronomic experts,' many of whom are chefs, PR folks, or food writers, the media outlet reported. The Best Restaurant in the World? It's the Peruvian-Japanese Maido in Lima

Drumroll, please, for the best restaurant in the world: It's Maido, in Lima, Peru. The annual ranking of the World's 50 Best Restaurants was announced this evening at Lingotto Fiere in Turin. The top pick is a 16-year-old restaurant led by chef Mitsuharu Tsumura that specializes in a singular style of Nikkei cuisine, the combination of Peruvian and Japanese flavors and influences. Tsumura's menu prioritizes seafood, with dishes like raw razor clams in a ponzu emulsion with truffle oil and tuna nirigi with shoyu-infused cured egg yolks and toasted quinoa. The Maido experience starts at 1190 Peruvian sols, or around $331. In an exclusive first interview with Tsumura, the chef said: 'This is not for my, this is for the country, this is for Peru, this is for the Pervian restaurants, This is for Latin America, and this is also for the whole industry.' He also paid tribute to the influence of the organizers on the culinary community. 'Before 50 Best, the community of chefs didn't get together as they do right now. And this is important because from there, we have built together many, many beautiful connections and this should be an example for all the industries in the world. There is competition, this is like a football game, but when you finish, you shake hands, you have a beer. There's so much differences in the world right now. We don't agree in so many things. Maybe food will be there, the tool to fix.' Maido stands in sharp contrast to last year's No. 1 spot, the fantastical Disfratur in Barcelona, where dishes have names like Fear: The Prawn. Spain was the big winner in 2024: three of the top five restaurants on the list were located there. This year, it was the host country Italy's turn. It had five restaurants in the top 50. The city of Bangkok did even better: It had six. The No. 2 spot on the 2025 list went to Asador Etxebarri in Spain's Basque country, where chef-owner Victor Arguinzoniz uses custom-made grills to prepare seemingly simple, yet outrageously flavorful dishes like grilled baby squid and ink with caramelized onions and pan-fried white truffles. The tasting menu goes for 280 euros . If you'd asked ChatGPT what the winners would be, you would have gotten a very different answer. Atomix came out as their pick for top recommendation; the platform also saw top contenders in Table by Bruno Verjus and the Alchemist in Copenhagen . Atomix was the top-ranked US dining room, and fell 6 spots from last year. It was also the only American restaurant to appear on the top 50 list. The UK had two spots in the top 50: the forward-thinking Mexican restaurant Kol at No. 49, which prioritizes local ingredients over imported ones, even avocados, and the dynamic Ikoyi, which, at No. 15, won the title of 'highest climber' moving up 27 spots from last year's spot. The 50 Best awards are owned and operated by the UK-based William Reed media company, which also publishes regional restaurant rankings in as well as ones for bars and hotels. The ranking is based on the votes of 1120 panelists around the world. The preamble to this years list, by William Drew, the director of content for 50 Best, included a tribute to Bloomberg's former chief food critic Richard Vines, who died this year. The 50 Best also doles out special awards. They included the World's Best Pastry Chef award went to Maxime Frédéric, from Plénitude. The Best Female Chef in the World is Pichaya Soontornyanakij, known as Pam, runs the modern Thai-Chinese dining room Potong in Bangkok; it was also the highest new entry on the list, at No. 13. The rankings for places 51-100 were published earlier this month. Among the notable US inclusions are César, the year-old modernist dining room in New York, which broke onto the list at No. 98; Atelier Crenn, the San Francisco boite from star chef Dominique Crenn, a re-entry at No. 96; and Single Thread in Sonoma County, which dropped to No. 80 from its No. 46 spot last year. Other noteworthy new entries included the innovative Chef Tam's Seasons in Macau, at No. 72 ; and the highest new entry, the elevated street food spot Arca in Tulum, Mexico at No. 67. Here are this year's winning restaurants. Last year's rankings are listed in parentheses; restaurants that are new to the list this year are marked with an asterisk. 2. The World's 50 Best Restaurants Announces Its 2025 List

The 2025 recipients of the restaurant world's most influential global awards, the World's 50 Best list, were announced last night at a ceremony in Turin, Italy. Maido became the second restaurant in Lima, Peru, to reach the top spot. Asador Extebarri in the Basque region of Spain held onto its place at No. 2. Quintonil in Mexico City, DiverXO in Madrid, and Alchemist in Copenhagen filled out the top five. 'We talk a lot about sustainability of the environment, but we rarely talk about human sustainability,' said Mitsuhura Tsumura, Maido's chef, who has helped redefine the centuries-old Japanese-Peruvian culinary tradition for a modern fine-dining audience. 'I think this industry can be an example of how we can bring people together with the power of food.' Overall, the list continued to recognize restaurants outside of the European fine-dining tradition, with innovative presentations, experimental flavors and hyperlocal ingredients. The highest-ranking U.S. restaurant was Atomix, which reached No. 6 in 2024 but came in twelfth this year, fresh off winning a James Beard award for outstanding hospitality on Monday. U.S. restaurants on the 'extended' list of 100 included Single Thread in Healdsburg, Calif. (80), Le Bernardin (90) and César (98) in Manhattan (90) and Atelier Crenn in San Francisco (96). Cosme in New York and Smyth in Chicago fell off the list. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

This South Indian Restaurant Has Been Ranked No. 1 In New York For 2025

An Indian restaurant in New York has just been named the best in the city for 2025. This is a historic achievement by Semma, a Michelin-starred establishment that serves diverse South Indian delicacies. Semma topped the prestigious annual list of 100 best restaurants by The New York Times. This year, only the top 10 restaurants in the city have been ranked. The remaining 90 have been named but do not have a specific ranking, unlike previous years. Following Semma on the 2025 list are Atomix, Le Bernardin, Kabaw, Ha's Snack Bar, King, Penny, Sushi Sho, Szechuan Mountain House and Tatiana by Kwame Onwuachi. In 2024, Semma occupied the 7th position. It was one of four Indian restaurants that made it to the list of 100 best. This year's list was curated by the New York Times' interim restaurant critics, Priya Krishna and Melissa Clark, along with editor Brian Gallagher. The trio revealed that they picked the final 100 from a total of more than 20,000 restaurants in the city. They noted, "Of course, there are more than 100 amazing restaurants in New York. But these best answered the questions: Where would we send our friends? Which places are worth a splurge? Worth an hour-long subway ride?" About Semma New York Semma in Greenwich Village is helmed by Chef Vijay Kumar, who hails from Tamil Nadu. The restaurant spotlights lesser-known dishes from different parts of South India in order to celebrate its rich culinary heritage. While describing Semma, The New York Times' food critic Priya Krishna states, "New York is teeming with Indian restaurants. Yet before Semma, a deeply personal tribute to the chef Vijay Kumar's upbringing in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the city's diners had never seen Indian food like this. Punctuated with chiles, coconut and earthy curry leaves, Semma's flavours are lingering and loud, yet restrained. Its dosa is the best in the city: a crisp specimen that's heady with fermentation and slicked with ghee and fiery gunpowder spice. Semma altered the course of Indian dining here, and four years on, Mr. Kumar's food continues to feel fresh." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Semma (@semmanyc) Semma has won several other accolades in the past. It currently holds its Michelin star for the third consecutive year. While there are several acclaimed Indian restaurants in New York, Semma is the only one in the city with a Michelin star at present. Semma is part of the Unapologetic Foods restaurant group, which also includes Dhamaka (another popular Indian restaurant in New York).

North America's 50 Best Restaurants List Will Launch At Wynn Las Vegas

Atomix was honored at the 2024 World's 50 Best Restaurants ceremony in Las Vegas. The 50 Best organization, which is behind the prestigious annual World's 50 Best Restaurants list, will debut North America's 50 Best Restaurants in September. The inaugural North America list, which covers the United States, Canada and parts of the Caribbean, will be unveiled during an awards ceremony at Wynn Las Vegas on September 25. The countdown of the list, sponsored by & Acqua Panna, at Wynn's Encore Theater will be part of a week of North America's 50 Best Restaurants programming that will also include panel discussions, an official press conference and a sumptuous chefs' feast that has been a highlight of many 50 Best gatherings. 'What prompted the launch of North America's 50 Best Restaurants was the feeling that the region has not been hugely represented in the World's 50 Best Restaurants list in recent years,' William Drew, director of content at 50 Best, says during an exclusive interview. 'But we know that there's an extraordinary array of great restaurants and great dining opportunities across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. So it felt like a really important thing to shine a light on those restaurants and those dining experiences and the great diversity that North America offers.' The only North American restaurants (not counting Mexico, which is categorized as Latin America in 50 Best lists) in last year's World's 50 Best Restaurants list were New York's Atomix (No. 6) and Healdsburg, California's Singlethread (No. 46). The extended 51-100 list included New York's Le Bernardin, Chicago's Smyth and New York's Cosme. Los Angeles got a nod when Kato was tapped as 'One to Watch' last year. Although World's 50 Best Restaurants skews toward fine dining establishments, North America's 50 Best Restaurants and its 300-plus voters will likely create a list that goes well beyond tasting menus. The goal is to recognize the wide range of top-tier food and service this continent has. 'There is no criteria in terms of style of a restaurant that we are looking for,' Drew says. 'It's not designed to be a list of fine dining restaurants. Great restaurants can be of any style or sort. I can't predict what it's going to comprise, what the geographical diversity is going to be. But I'm really optimistic that it's going to be at all sorts of different styles of restaurants. That's kind of the beauty of what we try to create.' Atomix and Singlethread collaborated on a wagyu and rice dish at Wynn Las Vegas during the week of ... More World's 50 Best Restaurants in June 2024. Last June's World's 50 Best Restaurants ceremony took place at Wynn Las Vegas. This year's announcement of World's 50 Best Restaurants will be in Turin, Italy, on June 19. The hope for 50 Best is that North America's 50 Best Restaurants also becomes an annual roving event. 'The plan would definitely be to move it around and not just host it in the U.S. but also host it in Canada and maybe one day in the Caribbean,' Drew says. 'Whether that it's in year two or year three or beyond has yet to be decided.' Las Vegas is a logical first step. 'Where better to hold our first North America party than in Las Vegas, where people from all over go to celebrate?' Drew says. 'Having worked in Vegas before, we knew what it had to offer. … Wynn is a good partner because they understand what we want to do. They're a premium resort and have strong food-and-beverage offerings and are committed to showcasing the diversity of dining across North America.' In addition to the official North America's 50 Best Restaurants programming, Wynn Las Vegas is bringing back its Revelry food festival as part of the week's celebrations. Revelry, which debuted during World's 50 Best Restaurants week last year, features a walk-around tasting extravaganza known as The Feast along with prominent guest-chef dinners, master classes and mixology pop-ups. 'We look forward to welcoming and celebrating North America's most renowned chefs," says Brian Gullbrants, COO of Wynn Resorts North America. "From the tremendous talent that will join us for North America's 50 Best Restaurants to the return of our annual food festival, Revelry, Wynn Las Vegas will play host to one of the most exciting culinary weeks of the year.'
