Why weight loss can be so hard with thyroid issues — and what actually works

Time of India10-06-2025

We see a lot of patients who come in with a similar problem of not being able to lose weight. Even after regularly exercising and maintaining a diet, they face difficulty in losing weight.
In cases like this, we suspect the reason to be thyroid. In women, hypothyroidism can be a major reason why people may end up thinking that weight loss is impossible. But that is not the case, it is just that the usual 'eat less, move more' advice might not be enough.
The T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) hormones are which are very important for controlling the metabolic rate as well as the use of energy. These are released by our Thyroid glands.
Hence, when it lags, the metabolism drops and you burn very few calories. People who suffer from hypothyroidism might feel cold, fatigued and lethargic in addition to gaining weight or finding it impossible to lose weight. The symptoms are often subtle and weight gain happens mainly due to fluid retention, accumulation of fat and very little calorie burn.
Why weight loss feels impossible
Thyroid-related weight issues aren't just about a slower metabolism. There are other factors at play as well:
Fatigue: Hypothyroidism can leave you too exhausted to exercise consistently.

Mood changes: Depression or low motivation, common in thyroid disorders, can derail healthy habits.
Hormonal imbalance: Thyroid hormones are mainly involved with the production of insulin, cortisol, and sex hormones. These are in turn responsible for maintaining an individual's appetite, fat storage and weight. So, reduced thyroid hormones strike an imbalance in these as well.
Muscle loss: Slowed-down thyroid glands can also lead to muscle breakdown which in turn reduces the basal metabolic rate of the body, thus causing the rate of calories that our body usually burns to come down.
What's especially frustrating is that even after starting thyroid medication, many people don't immediately lose weight. That's because medication stabilizes hormone levels but doesn't automatically reset your metabolism. It still requires a strategic, consistent approach.
What actually works for weight loss with thyroid issues
The silver lining in this situation is that weight loss with thyroid problems is possible — but it requires a more informed and tailored strategy.
Get your thyroid properly treated
First and foremost, it is essential to consult a doctor and make sure that your thyroid levels are balanced. For this, synthetic thyroid hormone is recommended so that the TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) comes down to the required range. This, however, does not work for everyone and some people profit from getting their free T3 and T4 levels balanced.
Prioritize strength training
Practicing strength training at least 2-3 times a week can negate the effects of hypothyroidism.
Strength training helps the body develop lean and strong muscle mass. It also boosts metabolism and contributes to long-term weight control goals.
Choose the right carbs
There are specific forms of thyroid disease that are autoimmune in nature, like Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. People suffering from such conditions maybe prone to blood sugar imbalance. Hence, following a strict diet consisting of fiber and complex carbohydrates as well as one that is low in processed foods and sugar can help to control insulin levels and support weight loss.
Manage stress and sleep
There are certain hormones in the body that can worsen the condition even more. One of them is the stress hormone, cortisol. It can interfere with the function of the thyroid gland and make losing weight difficult. Engaging in destressing activities is the solution for it. Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night, practicing relaxing techniques like reading a book or yoga and avoiding overexercising are a few ways of not letting cortisol affect the thyroid gland.
Address nutrient deficiencies
For a healthy functioning of the gland, iodine, selenium, zinc, vitamin D, and B12 are a few of the major nutrients. A deficiency in any of these can impair hormone production and energy metabolism. It's worth checking your levels and considering supplements if needed, under your doctor's supervision.
It surely is hard to lose weight, especially if you are suffering from hypothyroidism. It's not about extreme diets or working out until you drop. It's about understanding what your body needs and giving it the right kind of support. Correct diagnosis and recognising the type of thyroid disorder that the individual suffers from is important, marking the first step towards recovery. The right medical support, appropriate diet and fitness plan are what will bring about change.
Your thyroid doesn't have to define your body or your health journey. You're still in charge and every small step counts.

72% drop in malaria cases in Bastar from 2015, says admin

Raipur: Bastar division has recorded a 72% drop in malaria cases compared to 2015, under state's disease control programme in one of the most challenging malaria-prone regions, officials said. According to a data released by the state health department, the malaria positivity rate in Bastar has fallen from 4.60% to just 0.46%, while the Annual Parasite Incidence (API) in the region has dropped from 27.4 in 2015 to 7.11 in 2024. At the state level, the API has gone down from 5.21 to 0.98 in the same period. Compared to 2023, malaria cases in 2024 have seen a further decline of 8.52%. Health department officials said that the 10th and 11th phases of the Malaria Mukt Chhattisgarh campaign in 2024 focused on enhanced surveillance and focused treatment, which played a critical role in pushing the numbers down further. The state is conducting the campaign in alignment with guidelines from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Malaria in Chhattisgarh is primarily concentrated in the tribal and forested districts, especially in Bastar division, due to dense forest cover, remote habitations, poor healthcare access, and favourable conditions for mosquito breeding. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The situation would get tense mostly when a number of security jawans would fall ill or succumb to malaria, after venturing out in forests during monsoon. Frequent incidents of malaria cases among jawans spotlighted the vulnerability of frontline forces and triggered a renewed push for preventive screenings and stricter bed-net enforcement among the troops. CM Sai said that it was a result of community-driven action, consistent fieldwork of health workers, Mitanins, and medical staff. Health minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said that the target is to get all districts of Chhattisgarh malaria-free, and sustained efforts are underway to realize this goal. He noted that activities such as distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, door-to-door testing, rapid treatment, and community awareness have been key drivers of this progress.

‘Inappropriate to claim man intentionally hid disease': Insurance firm ordered to pay

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed an insurance firm backed by a nationalised bank to pay Rs 50 lakh to Savitri Salam, whose husband's insurance claim was initially rejected. The commission found that the insurer failed to conclusively prove concealment of pre-existing diseases by the deceased. Savitri Salam, a resident of Surdongar village in Keshkal tehsil, filed a complaint after her husband's health deteriorated, leading to his demise on 16 June 2021. She sought a claim under a policy taken by her husband, but the insurance firm rejected it, alleging that he provided incorrect information about his pre-existing medical conditions and treatment in the proposal form. The insurance company argued before the district consumer commission that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease prior to taking the policy, and this was noted in his medical records from AIIMS, Raipur, as part of his medical history. Based on this, the claim was rejected due to misrepresentation of health information in the proposal form. The District Consumer Commission, Kanker, accepted Savitri Salam's complaint and directed the insurance company to pay the full claim amount within one month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The insurance company then challenged this order before the Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. During the appeal hearing, the bench of Justice Gautam Chourdiya, president, and Pramod Kumar Varma, member, determined that the claim was rejected solely based on a note in the AIIMS, Raipur, medical record. No other medical records were presented to conclusively prove that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease before applying for the policy, underwent any prior treatment, or was on continuous medication. The commission observed there was no evidence to suggest that the insured was aware of these conditions when he submitted the proposal. The state commission concluded that it was not appropriate to claim the insured intentionally concealed important facts about his pre-existing diseases in the proposal. The appeal was rejected, and the insurance company has been directed to pay Rs 50 lakh from the life insurance claim, after deducting the Rs 56,621 premium amount already refunded to Savitri Salam by the insurance company. This amount will also include 7% annual simple interest from the date the complaint was filed (27 Dec 2023).

IAF airlifts organs from Pune to Delhi, helps save three lives

Pune: A team of doctors from Army Hospital (Research and Referral) flew in on an Indian Air Force's Super Hercules aircraft on Friday night to collect and transport a liver and two kidneys from a 59-year-old brain-dead woman in Pune to New Delhi for transplantation, after her family generously consented to organ donation. The donor, mother of a serving soldier, was declared brain-dead at Command Hospital on on June 17. "The team retrieved a liver, two kidneys and two corneas in under four hours before taking off to Delhi, where the liver was transplanted into a civilian patient. The two kidneys were transplanted into two serving soldiers. The donor saved three lives," said a senior doctor from Command Hospital. A green air corridor was created for the aircraft to facilitate the airlift of live organs from Pune to Delhi. "Under the green air corridor protocol, the aircraft gets priority for take-off and landing. Besides, all ground clearances, including radars, get an alert in advance for the smooth flying of the aircraft," a senior IAF officer told TOI. "This humanitarian mission was enabled by seamless coordination between Armed Forces Medical Services and IAF, ensuring that the organs reached in time to save multiple lives. The noble act of the donor family stands as a testament to selfless sacrifice, even in the face of personal loss. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Over 40 and Struggling With Belly Fat?
