‘I prefer to remember him smiling': Flavio Briatore explains why he stays away from Michael Schumacher

Time of India4 hours ago

More than a decade after
Michael Schumacher
's life-altering skiing crash, former Benetton team boss Flavio Briatore has offered one of the few fresh glimpses into the F1 legend's closed world. Speaking to
Italy's Corriere della Sera
, and echoed in follow-up coverage across international outlets, the 74-year-old said he still speaks with Schumacher's wife, Corinna, but chooses not to visit the seven-time world champion at their Swiss home.
His reasons shed light on both a long, private friendship and the painful reality of Schumacher's condition.
A friend who keeps his distance
'If I close my eyes, I see Michael smiling after a victory. I'd rather remember him like that than see him lying in bed,' Briatore told the paper.
Those words capture a dilemma familiar to many who have watched loved ones suffer catastrophic injury: the pull between loyalty and the wish to preserve happier memories.
Schumacher, 56, has not been seen in public since the off-piste accident in Méribel, France, on 29 December 2013, which left him with severe brain trauma.
In steady touch with Corinna
Although he stays away physically, Briatore said the lines of communication remain open. 'Corinna and I talk often,' he revealed, underscoring the mutual trust that still links Schumacher's inner circle to the man who first spotted the German's talent in the early 1990s.

Corinna has famously guarded her husband's privacy, releasing virtually no medical detail beyond confirming that he continues rehabilitation at their Lake Geneva estate. Briatore's comment respects that secrecy while hinting at the solidarity friends maintain from a distance.
The Benetton bond that changed F1
Briatore's connection to Schumacher runs deep: as Benetton team principal he fast-tracked a 22-year-old rookie into the seat in 1991, then built the outfit around him.
Schumacher repaid that faith with back-to-back world titles in 1994 and 1995—championships that launched a career which ultimately tied Lewis Hamilton's record of seven crowns.

That shared history explains why Briatore's words carry weight; few others were as close during the German's meteoric rise.
A guarded legacy, a public yearning
Since the accident, official updates on Schumacher have been scant. Even small gestures—like fellow great Sir Jackie Stewart carrying a helmet bearing the initials 'MS' during a Bahrain GP lap earlier this year—make headlines because information is so rare.
Briatore's decision 'not to intrude,' as some supporters interpret it, reinforces the family's stance: Michael's recovery is private, and memories of his brilliance on track remain the picture they wish the world to keep.
Why Briatore's stance matters
Fans, sponsors and former colleagues still crave news of one of motorsport's biggest icons. Yet Briatore's comments remind observers that respect sometimes means restraint. By choosing memories of a champion lifting trophies over the reality of long-term care, he signals that Schumacher's competitive spirit—not his injury—should define his story.
As the F1 paddock rolls on without the driver who once owned its record books, that perspective may be the closest thing to an update the public receives—and, Briatore suggests, perhaps the fairest way to honor a friend.

Florida Panthers' Sam Bennett roasted online for ‘apology' following Stanley Cup antics

Sam Bennett (via Getty Images) Florida Panthers winger Sam Bennett ignited widespread outrage on Reddit after he apologized for previous dirty hits—offered as part of the team's Stanley Cup celebration—and went viral for all the wrong reasons. Quoting a speech pilfered from Conor McGregor, Bennett's divisive comments unleashed a torrent of criticism from hockey fans, reigniting controversies surrounding sportsmanship, violence in hockey, and how far is too far when celebrating a championship. Sam Bennett's speech in quoting Conor McGregor inspires mockery from fans as controversy breaks out regarding his 'dirty hits' Sam Bennett's on-ice reputation has been a long source of debate — as a gritty, physical winger, he's also been often criticized for straying from the right side of that line into endangering and dirty play. But after assisting the Florida Panthers in winning their first Stanley Cup, his moment on the mic didn't see him find redemption—it fanned controversy anew. In the victory parade speech, Bennett gave a speech that was widely seen as tone-deaf, an echo of an old Conor McGregor saying: "I just want to apologize. to absolutely nobody." It was meant to be sarcastic or defiant, but for many fans, it came off as tasteless — especially given some of the recent hits for which he's been criticized, such as the elbow to Anthony Stolarz and a hit on Matthew Knies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Sam Bennett Finally Apologizes One of the best Reddit comments captured the mood: "There will be no sympathy when some takes a liberty with Bennett." Another called out, "Sounds like he had a bit to drink before taking the mic. Like he had hiccups or something." Another said, "The league has had every opportunity to make a change, but they're showing his highlights on NHL Network instead. This is exactly what they want." Notably, even some of the Panthers fans were let down. One self-identified former season ticket holder penned, "The McGregor quotes were totally cringy and stupid by the players." Others complained about the departure from classy celebrations in past years, likening it to Alex Ovechkin's celebratory 2018 Cup night, which stayed upbeat without going after opponents. Randeep Hooda says Chris Hemsworth, John Cena rehearse for weeks while action is designed around Sunny Deol, Salman Khan: ‘They are more worshipped'

Over the last five years, Randeep Hooda has emerged as a formidable action star, whether it's in his Hollywood debut, Sam Hargrave's 2020 Netflix India action thriller Extraction or more recently, his antagonist turn in Gopichand Malineni's Bollywood directorial debut Jaat. Hooda has also worked with seasoned action stars across the globe, whether it's Chris Hemsworth and John Cena in the West, or Sunny Deol and Salman Khan back home. In an interview with Mid-day, Randeep said, 'The action is designed around them (Sunny Deol and Salman Khan). They're both great. When you see them, you feel they can do it.' He added, 'They're stars before the advent of the internet. They were rare commodities. Now, you know what every star is doing or eating, it's all available on their social media. They have their persona, and that's what I was trying to aim for.' Randeep Hooda also claimed that Sunny Deol and Salman Khan have reached a point in their careers when action is designed around them, instead of them trying to fit into the action choreography. He pointed out that Hollywood action stars like John Cena and Chris Hemsworth have a different approach in comparison. 'The difference is they come and rehearse for weeks and weeks before they do it. Me and Chris were rehearsing for six weeks before we did them. It looks real. That happens with rehearsals, like in theatre. They're not as worshipped as our Indian male stars are, and that's probably what keeps it somewhere real,' argued Randeep. When he went on the sets of Extraction and had a long action sequence with Chris Hemsworth, Randeep Hooda realized he's never even punched anybody on a film set despite his macho onscreen image. 'That was 2019. So for 19 years, I had the image of this tough guy in various roles, but I never punched anybody. I had to learn how to take and give a punch. It's much like dance. You feel like you've done a lot, and then one morning, you wake up and realize, 'Man, I haven't done anything (laughs),'' said Randeep. Randeep will soon reunite with Extraction director Sam Hargrave for the latter's action adventure comedy Matchbox, which also stars John Cena. It's slated to release in cinemas next year. Randeep recently locked horns with Sunny Deol in Jaat, whereas he's worked with Salman Khan in three films so far — Sajid Nadiadwala's Kick (2014), Ali Abbas Zafar's Sultan (2016), and Prabhu Deva's Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai (2021). 'He's very intelligent and creative, and I think a bit isolated now. He's given me a lot of advice over the years, which I haven't followed, on how to be nice and helpful to people. But he gives it to you in all earnestness and wants the best for you,' added Randeep.

Anushka Sharma reveals why she and Virat Kohli are keeping their children Vamika and Akaay away from the public eye: 'We don't want to raise brats'

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli have always kept thier children Vamika and Akaay away from the public eye. Their celebrity status and popularity make it difficult for them to hide their children but the couple has strived hard to maintain that. In a recent interview, Anushka opened up on parenting and their decision to keep children away from the public eye. She also spoke about the importance of raising kids with the right values. The actress said during a chat with Vogue, "Conditioning is the most important role in how we see the world. I come from a progressive background, so that will always be a part of our home. Love is the underlying factor in our home, and what's important to us is that our child be respectful of people. You have to create that value structure. We don't want to raise brats." She added, "Times have changed. It's important for children to look at their parents—they learn from you. And there is a sense of normalcy that both of us do work. Of course, one will have to manage things differently and more efficiently to work." Talking about parenting and how difficult it is, Anushka added, "You have to learn as you go; you can't pressurise yourself, but you have to be prepared because there will be curveballs." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo The 'Band Baaja Baaraat' actress also opened up on raising her children away from the limelight. She said, "We've thought about it a lot. We definitely do not want to raise a child in the public eye—we don't plan on engaging our child in social media. I think it's a decision your child should be able to take. No kid should be made to be more special than the other. It's hard enough for adults to deal with it. It's going to be difficult, but we intend to follow through. " The actress has largely been spending time away from movies, ever since she embraced motherhood and is being quite selective about her work.
