Danny Dyer admits 'I was slowly killing myself' before he begged for help

Daily Mirror4 days ago

Danny Dyer has spoken about the highs and lows of his career including when he was overdoing the partying and had to take time away from TV
Danny Dyer has revealed his moment of clarity to make a change to his life when he was 'slowly killing himself' after being 'off his head' after the National TV Awards.
The acclaimed actor, who has won rave reviews for his performance in the Disney+ drama Rivals, also looks back and said his Eastenders co-star Luisa Bradshaw-White was the only one who told him he had an issue and helped his sort his life out insisting 'No one else would say that to me.' Danny is now enjoying a blossoming career and has his life on track, having recently walked daughter Dani down the aisle to marry footballer Jarrod Bowen.

But looking back with interviewer Louis Theroux, Danny said previously he knew he was 'destroying himself' and his career. At the time he was on EastEnders playing Mick Carters since 2013, but he would head into rehab in Cape Town in 2016.

Danny, 47, said: 'I had a moment of clarity where I had been on it all night after the NTAs. I think I'd won and that's always on like a Tuesday or something and I had to go to work. There's another thing with EastEnders, is that they go, yeah, come celebrate NTAs, but you are up at seven in the morning. So anyway, I'd just overdone it again and I just could not work out how to get my jeans on.
'I was just sitting on my ensuite toilet trying to work out what leg goes in what, and I don't why. I've sort of had many of them moments over the years of me being completely off my head. But that one really resonated with me. It was more because I looked up, my wife was just watching me and she looked shattered and she looked ill.
'And of course, you know, the drug taking and the madness that comes with it, you're destroying yourself and your body and you're slowly killing yourself, but you also, you're really upsetting the people around you. I just looked at her, even through this moment, I was off my head. But everything seemed to just sort of go, what the f*ck are you doing to people around you that love you? And it was that moment and I could hear Artie, my son, who's now 11, he must have been 3. He was running around downstairs and I think I'd got rid of the last straggler out the house.
'Yeah, So I had a car picking me up to take me to work and it was just this moment I thought, sh*t, you're going to die. You're going to kill yourself. You're not happy. You're spanking all your money on drugs. You're destroying everything around you. It's weird, that moment, because I went straight to work that day and I was a bit off my head and I did say, 'Listen, I need help. I can't do this anymore. I need help. I don't know what it is, but this is a crossroads in my life where I need a gear change and I need it now and I don't think I'm going to survive this year'.
Danny made the decision to go to rehab in Cape Town after this awards show after-party at his house.

He added: 'And so, you know, I want give a shout out to Louisa Bradshaw White, who played my sister Tina, who really came to the front for me, more than anybody else.
'She'd always said that she thinks I've got an issue and problem. No one else would say that to me… I don't know, people don't want to busy themselves in your life either.
She would always say, 'whenever you're ready' you know, that was her vibe with me and then I was ready.

'She's had her issues like a lot of people have really, and a lot of people in my life, I've seen a lot of people go through some quite heavy stuff and always thought, oh f*cking hell, that's quite heavy, glad I'm not that bad. Actually, turns out I was, it just took me a longer route to get there.'
Danny, who is married with three children, previously told the BBC receiving a letter from his daughter Dani while at a rehab facility in 2016 was what convinced him to continue his treatment.
He shot to fame in the 1999 film Human Traffic, is now one of the most recognisable stars of British TV and film. Danny played Mick Carter in BBC soap EastEnders from 2013 to 2022 and has now starred in his own comedy series Mr. Bigstuff and big budget dramas like Rivals.

He told Louis Theroux he is 'proud' of his upcoming film 'Three Quick Breaths'.
On a lighter note he also talked about seeing a UFO and being convinced the exist.
It was an orb going through the sky. So then that's a UFO. So, whatever you want to make of that, that's the fact,' he said.

He also said he won't be trying to crack Hollywood anytime soon, despite being encouraged to try.
He explained: 'I understand that's where the work is and that's the ultimate, but can I be bothered to go and live out there on my own? Talking American all the time to everybody pretending I'm someone else.'

Emmerdale's Cain broken and bereft as more sad news hits the Dingles

As if he hasn't got enough going on, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) received even more bad news in tonight's episode of Emmerdale. After learning that Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) had been killed and thrown in a lake, Cain has tried to process his grief, but he's been regularly interrupted by Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh). Following the fight Cain and Nate had before he died, Tracy has now decided Cain killed his own son, and won't give the theory up. Yesterday, Cain arrived in the shop to speak with Tracy about Nate's funeral. He wanted to know what her plans were, but she said they involved not inviting him to the event. Cain was devastated. He tried to make himself feel better by judging Eric's (Chris Chittell) relationship with his own son, but the shop owner hit back and said that his son is alive, unlike Cain's. Eric knew that Cain was lashing out because he couldn't deal with the fact Nate died hating him. The comments made Cain tearful, it was obvious that Eric was right. Cain found solace in a bottle of Zak's homemade whisky, but then drank even more courtesy of John (Oliver Farnworth). He was looking for a high and needed to save someone, so he forced Cain to drink so much he passed out. Moira (Natalie J Robb) returned home just as John was putting Cain in the recovery position. He set him up with a drip, and told Moira that Cain just needs rest. Cain didn't leave the sofa in tonight's episode as he dealt with a hellish hangover. As a result, he got Sarah (Katie Hill) to sort the work that needed doing at the garage. When Charity (Emma Atkins) found out, she was annoyed at Cain. Charity now knows that Sarah has cancer, and knew she should be resting rather than doing her job. More Trending Charity marched over to Butlers and told Cain that Sarah wouldn't be at work for the foreseeable. He obviously wanted to know why and eventually, Charity revealed to him and Moira that Sarah has cancer…despite telling her granddaughter that she wouldn't tell them. The news hit Cain like a tonne of bricks. In the past few weeks alone, he's been told that his son is dead, his daughter Debbie (Charley Webb) moved to Australia without even telling him, and now his granddaughter has been diagnosed with cancer. Moira tried to comfort Cain, but it's certainly going to take him a little while to get his head around all of the upsetting news that keeps being thrown at him. Corrie's Sue Cleaver shares if she will move to rival soap after ITV exit

Sue Cleaver has played Eileen Grimshaw in Coronation Street for 25 years but quit the role earlier this year. She has now revealed if she will ever appear on a rival soap Former Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has revealed if she will ever appear on a rival soap following her final appearance as Eileen Grimshaw airing earlier this month. The 61-year-old actress announced her decision to bid farewell to Weatherfield at the start of this year, after an impressive 25 years on the ITV soap. At the time, she issued a heartfelt statement: "I've had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street," adding further, "The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly." ‌ Sue hasn't been idle during her tenure on the Street – she took a hiatus to tread the boards as Mother Superior in Sister Act before gracing our screens as a panellist on ITV's Loose Women in 2024. ‌ She also enjoyed a stint on I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Back in 2022. But now she has the time to commit to other projects, will Sue be popping up on a rival soap like Coronation Street or EastEnders? It's not unheard of for actors to pop up in multiple soap universes, with the likes of Denise Welch and Michelle Collins appearing on both EastEnders and Coronation Street. Speaking in a new interview, Sue says she is "chuffed" with her Corrie legacy, and believes she was given "a wonderful send off" but admits she is ready to "live fearlessly." "I think people forget that you either have courage or you don't, courage is a muscle, start really small and put yourself out of your comfort zone for a couple of minutes a day, enquire about a book club or evening class, because that muscle really does," the actress muses. Sue continues to recall to The Sun how filming her final scenes "was really weird feeling, but it felt right" and it was "the right time" to go. She is now ready to take advantage of her new found "freedom" after spending over two decades at ITV. ‌ "I love doing Loose Women, there are other things I want to do and there is a lot more of the world I want to see," Sue admits. But when it comes to going over to the dark side and popping into The Queen Vic or the Woolpack, Sue is adamant that she is still loyal to Corrie. She rules out appearing on another soap "at this stage" as she is still "very committed to Corrie", adding: "I've been incredibly fortunate and it gave me the opportunity that not many actresses have, to be at home, to be there for my son in the morning and put him to bed at night and to have a proper home life, whereas normally you have to go where the work is. I've been extremely fortunate, it's not lost on me how lucky I've been, it has a big place in my heart." ‌ Speaking to the Mirror in May, Sue opened up on her decision to have co-star Ryan Thomas return for her final episodes, as his character Eileen's son Jason Grimshaw makes a huge offer. Sue shared: "Ryan was there from the start, and he was inconveniently living in Thailand, and it wouldn't be too far of a jump to expect that if Eileen was going to make a leap, that she would involve her son. "And so when I decided to leave, like over a year ago, I rang Ryan, and I said, 'Ryan, I'm going to tell them that I'm going, and if they ask me about exits, I'd really like to say that you'd come back and take me out, but I don't know whether they'd go for it or not'. "And he just went, 'Oh my gosh, of course, I would', which was so lovely for me. And it was just so nice to have him back and filming those final scenes with him. It just felt like I'd come full circle really."
