Brazilians Flamengo scored twice and then Nicolas Jackson was sent off for a dreadful high tackle that left his team with a mountain to climb in searing afternoon heat.
Pedro Neto had put them ahead in the 14th minute with a classy solo goal and Chelsea looked set to go on and win the game and possibly the group to show their intent out here.
They should still go on to the next round but the manner of their undoing with less than half an hour to go and the reckless tackle by Jackson has tainted their previously flawless performances in the new expanded competition.
Jackson was sent off in the Premier League at Newcastle last month and still has one match to serve of his three domestic game ban.

He will miss the first weekend of the new season in August.
Even more alarming, he had only been on the pitch for four minutes, having replaced new striker Liam Delap from the bench.
Chelsea looked to have the edge over their South American opponents with their drive and purpose on the pitch making the difference.
But they failed to push on from Neto's goal and paid the price through slack defending and Jackson's incredible rush of blood.

Having narrowly avoided conceding just after the hour mark, as Flamengo missed a sitter when Gonzalo Plata was inches away from a cross across the face of goal, they let one in from exactly the same position in the 62nd minute.
A corner was headed back across goal by the same player and Bruno Henrique was on hand to prod the ball home from a yard out.

Maresca then swapped his strikers two minutes later but the buoyant Brazilians then took the lead through former Manchester City midfielder Danilo.
And as Chelsea scrambled to get their heads together, things took an even worse turn as Jackson flew at Flamengo left back Ayrton Lucas.
He is lucky the player was not seriously hurt as his studs up challenged connected with the left back's shin on 68 minutes.
And with ten men Flamengo sealed a memorable victory through Wallace Yan to compound Chelsea's misery.

Jackson is now facing an automatic one game ban but it could be upgraded once Fifa take a look at the evidence - and it doesn't look good.
At least it settles the issue of who plays up front in the decisive game against Club Tunis in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The one bright spot for Chelsea is the performance of Neto who has sent a clear message to Maresca that he should rethink his plans to buy a new left winger this summer.
He scored his second goal of the tournament and is showing little signs of the fatigue and heat exhaustion that is hampering some of his peers out here in the hot US summer.

Boss Maresca placed him in a fluid role, supporting main Delap up front but also drifting wide to his more familiar berth out on the left flank.
And it was a winger's instinct kicking into gear to nick the ball from Flamengo wing back Wesley on the halfway line near the touchline that set him free on a run at goal.
In the 30 degrees plus temperature it was some feat to barrel forwards at pace from distance with the ball at his feet and outpace the chasing pack.
But Neto kept his momentum and nerve to charge into the box and then slot a low shot past Rossi and put his team ahead to settle Chelsea who had been largely under the cosh up until that point.
Interestingly, just 24 hours before the game, Maresca talked openly about his need to strengthen the left side of his team.
A loan deal for Jadon Sancho last season did not go as planned and Mykhailo Mudryk is suspended while awaiting the outcome of doping charges.
It is a problem area for the head coach but it didn't look it on the evidence of this performance.

Transfer news LIVE: Nuno Espirito Santo signs new deal at Forest, Liverpool ‘eye huge Guehi move', Spurs want Semenyo

Seagulls target Elliot Brighton are set to enter the race for Harvey Elliott - and have identified the Liverpool star as their key summer target. The England international's future at Anfield is unclear, and his playing time last season was limited under Arne Slot. That's put him on the radar of several clubs in England, and abroad, who are keen to secure the services of a versatile player who can operate in midfield or out wide. SunSport understands Brighton are now tracking the 22-year-old and see him as a player who can help take them to the next level. And sources say the presence of James Milner, Liverpool's former vice-captain, could help persuade Elliott to make the switch to the south coast.

Nicolas Jackson says he is ‘so angry at myself' after red card in Flamengo loss

Nicolas Jackson apologised after his costly sending-off in Chelsea's Club World Cup implosion against Flamengo. The Senegal striker was shown a straight red card – just four minutes after coming off the bench – for an aggressive studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas in Friday's 3-1 defeat in Philadelphia. It came amid a calamitous six-minute spell in the second period in which the Blues also conceded two goals to surrender their half-time lead. It was also Jackson's second dismissal in just four appearances having also been given his marching orders for a forearm crack on Newcastle's Sven Botman in a Premier League match last month. 'I want to say sorry,' Jackson wrote on Instagram on what was a 24th birthday to forget. 'To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. 'Another red card… And honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. 'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a moment in football that went the wrong way. 'No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. 'Sorry. Sorry, Sorry.' 🔴⚫️ A comeback win for @Flamengo! #FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 21, 2025 Jackson's moment of madness, in which he forcefully caught Lucas on the shin, effectively ended Chelsea's hopes of getting back into the Group D contest at Lincoln Financial Field. Enzo Maresca's side were already reeling after Pedro Neto's well-taken 14th-minute opener was cancelled out by Bruno Henrique after 62 minutes and quickly followed by another goal for veteran Danilo. Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring seven minutes from time, putting Flamengo in charge of the group and potentially making Chelsea's route through the tournament complicated. Defender Marc Cucurella suggested discipline was an area Jackson needed to work on. The defender told DAZN: 'He is young player, he has a lot of quality, he maybe needs to improve this a little bit. We are here to improve, we are not perfect so it is part of the game.' Maresca did not deny the sending-off was damaging, though he tempered criticism by claiming it was not a clear-cut decision. Maresca said: 'Those six minutes completely changed the dynamic of the game. 'I'm not 100 per cent sure that it's a red card compared to the Newcastle one, but it can be and the referee decided it. 'It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in these things. He knows very well that both situations were not something good for the team.' Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, now the manager of Flamengo, backed Jackson to bounce back. 'It was a little mistake,' he said. 'It was a clear red for me but it is a small detail for a player who can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.'

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo signs new three-year deal

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has signed a new three-year contract to remain at the City Ground until at least 2028. The 51-year-old guided Forest to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season, securing European qualification for the first time since the 1995-96 season. For much of the campaign, it looked as though Forest were going to qualify for the Champions League, but they lost five of their last eight games. Evangelos Marinakis has handed Nuno Espírito Santo a new three-year contract until the summer of 2028. 🤝 — Nottingham Forest (@NFFC) June 21, 2025 However, that has not prevented owner Evangelos Marinakis from rewarding Nuno following the club's highest league finish for 30 years, while they also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Manchester City. Nuno said: 'I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. 'Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the Club, which helped us achieve great things last season. 'I would like to thank our owner, Mr Marinakis, for his constant support and backing. It is important to me to share a strong relationship with our ownership and we have thoroughly enjoyed working together ever since I arrived at Forest. 'Now is the time to work harder than ever as we strive for more special memories together.' The former Wolves and Tottenham boss arrived at the City Ground in December 2023 following the sacking of Steve Cooper, and helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season. Marinakis said: 'Nuno has made a great impact and performed very well during his time with us so far. 'He has demonstrated that he maximises player performance and is an expert at developing players, whilst also embedding our young talent into the first team set-up. 'We enjoy a strong and solid relationship together and, above all, we share the same dream and ambition of writing a new history for Nottingham Forest, competing in the Premier League and in Europe and winning trophies for our great club.'
