Philippines orders 12 more FA-50 combat jets from South Korea

Yahoo05-06-2025

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines' defense department sealed the order for 12 FA-50 light combat aircraft in a $700 million package with Korea Aerospace Industries, the company said in a statement released Wednesday.
The export contract includes 12 FA-50s set to arrive around 2030. The upgraded jets are capable of aerial refueling and will be installed with AESA radars.
The deal also includes an undisclosed number of air-to-ground and air-to-air weapons.
KAI had previously exported 12 FA-50s to the Air Force in a 2014 export order, which was fulfilled in 2017. One FA-50 aircraft crashed in early March during a counterinsurgency operation in Mindanao in the country's south.
The military grounded the FA-50s immediately after the crash but lifted the order after an internal investigation found no mechanical mishap occurred during the operation.
Manila has actively purchased frigates, corvettes, aircraft, and weapons from South Korean defense firms to modernize its armed forces. The Philippines was South Korea's second-largest global customer until 2021.
KAI expects the orders to open more interest in the aircraft among governments in Europe, the Middle East and South America.
The Philippine Air Force currently operates the FA-50 and A-29 Super Tucano turboprop light attack aircraft. The defense department has yet to decide on the country's multirole fighter jet program, which is estimated to be the most expensive acquisition under the final phase of the Horizons military modernization project.

McDonald's secures honor no restaurants wants

America's restaurant industry is at a post-pandemic crossroads, grappling with rising prices, shifting consumer habits, and the relentless march of digital transformation. Both independent eateries and well-known chains have been suffering and closing rapidly, and there doesn't seem to be one reason for failure or recipe for success. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Yet, as the latest 2025 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) Restaurant and Food Delivery Study reveals, the biggest names in the business often fall short where it matters most: customer satisfaction. While large chains dominate the landscape in terms of sales and visibility, their sheer scale doesn't always translate to happy customers. In fact, the ACSI study shows that many of the industry's largest players - especially in the quick-service and food delivery sectors - routinely fall behind smaller rivals in customer satisfaction scores. For example, the quick-service restaurant (QSR) sector maintained a customer satisfaction score of 79 out of 100. Chick-fil-A led the survey for the 11th year in a row, scoring 83. McDonald's, Wendy's, and Taco Bell failed to make the top tier, overshadowed by regional favorites and smaller brands that have made strides in customer service. McDonald's earned the worst ACSI score (70), but ACSI analysts believe the chain's new efforts to speed up research and development needed to drive faster technology and menu changes could reverse the company's slide. Raising Cane's and Wingstop, relative newcomers compared to some names on the list, are gaining ground by focusing on a limited menu, quality, and digital engagement even as they grow. The full-service segment tells a similar story. Texas Roadhouse, a chain that emphasizes local flair and attentive service, topped the list with an 84. Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse also performed well, but many other big names struggled. Chili's, for example, saw its score drop by 3%, while Buffalo Wild Wings and Denny's posted some of the lowest satisfaction ratings in the sector. Related: Trader Joe's rivals could learn a lesson from the cult favorite company What's driving the gap? "Large chains often face challenges maintaining consistency and personal touch as they expand. Customers notice when service feels impersonal or when digital experiences don't match up to expectations," said Associate Professor of Marketing at Michigan State University and ACSI's Director of Research Emeritus, Forrest Morgeson, in an announcement. Digital ordering and delivery have become critical to the restaurant experience, but the biggest brands are stumbling here, too. The nationwide chains rely on digital platforms for ordering and delivery, but the third-party services may make it difficult for them to provide a seamless or consistent experience. Satisfaction is highest among dine-in customers (83), but falls for carry-out (79) and drops even further for delivery (74). The complexity of scaling digital operations appears to be a stumbling block for many industry leaders. Perhaps nowhere are the challenges facing big brands more evident than in food delivery. While the sector as a whole improved slightly to a satisfaction score of 74, smaller delivery brands outperformed the giants. Uber Eats scored 75, while DoorDash and Grubhub each managed only 73. Chick-fil-A also led in the South and West and tied with Culver's in the Midwest, while Starbucks took the Northeast. In the burger category, Culver's edged out Burger King; in pizza, Papa Johns and Pizza Hut came out on top - demonstrating that even within categories, the biggest names don't always win. As the restaurant industry faces economic headwinds and changing consumer expectations, the ACSI survey makes one thing clear: being big isn't enough. Customers want quality, consistency and a personal touch. These are areas where smaller or regional brands can beat out the big nationwide chains. LGES, Toyota Tsusho in US battery recycling JV

South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) and Japan's Toyota Tsusho Corporation announced that they have agreed to establish a battery recycling joint venture in the US. The new company, to be called Green Metals Battery Innovations LLC, will focus mainly on recycling electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Under the agreement signed by LG Energy Solution Michigan and Toyota Tsusho America, the two partners will build and operate a pre-processing plant in Winston-Salem, in the US state of North Carolina. The facility, scheduled to go into operation in 2026, will carry out pre-processing operations to recover black mass containing raw metals such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium, by dismantling and shredding battery production scrap. The black mass will later undergo a separate post-processing stage to extract the valuable raw materials, thus establishing a 'battery-to-battery' closed-loop recycling system whereby the recycled materials are used to produce new batteries. The plant will rely initially on scrap materials generated by LGES in the production of EV batteries for Toyota Motor Corporation. The facility will have an annual processing capacity of 13,500 tons of scrap — equivalent to over 40,000 EV batteries. Chang Beom Kang, CSO of LGES, said in a statement: 'This joint venture will not only help secure a stable supply of key battery materials but also enhance the competitiveness of our recycling business in North America. We are fully committed to leading the recycling market through innovative and differentiated technologies.' Masaharu Katayama, COO of Toyota Tsusho, added: 'We are proud to partner with LGES to advance the battery recycling infrastructure in North America. This joint venture is a significant step toward realizing a circular economy for batteries, which is essential for building a sustainable mobility society.' Waffle House is testing an exciting new product

Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may already understand customers' love for Waffle House - especially if you're one of the people who feels a fondness for the chain. Waffle House is known for its fast service, reliable menu staples, and low prices. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter But another thing that makes the chain special is its friendly attitude toward customers. Visit just about any Waffle House, and you'll be greeted with a smile and offered consistent, friendly service with a personal touch. It's the same formula that makes lines wrap around your local Chick-Fil-A, so it's no surprise that Waffle House inspires a similar level of devotion, especially in the South, where it was founded. While Waffle House does introduce new items to its menu, it does so at a very different pace than other quick-service restaurants. Much like McDonald's, Waffle House leans on its classics. But now, Waffle House is debuting a new menu item that taps into trends - a very unusual move for a chain that relies on the tried and true. Imag source:If you live in the Atlanta area, you can now try something new if you go to the right Waffle House: Waffle House-branded cold brew coffee. The cold brew uses 100% Arabica beans roasted by Royal Cup Coffee, which is the same supplier you're sipping when you get a hot coffee in those comforting white cups. The new cold brew, which is blended with sweet cream, comes in a can and retails for $3.95. Waffle House got its start in 1955 in Avondale Estates, Georgia, so it's no surprise that the chain has decided to focus on its home state with this test run. It seems as if Waffle House is considering selling its products in a new way, based on some of the choices it's made this year so far. Aside from the new cold brew offering, Waffle House also announced on social media last week that it now sells its cult-classic sweet cream waffle mix on Amazon. The mix is available in single, two-pack, and four-pack options. While the single pack is sold out, you can still get the double for $24.99 and the four-pack for $44.99. Waffle House also offers a gift box option that comes with a four-pack of the waffle mix and Waffle House-branded waffle syrup for $48.99. The chain has also leaned into branded merch, offering shirts and hats, mugs, tumblrs, and even a night light that looks like the iconic Waffle House sign.
