Pete Alonso Had Words After Yankees' Loss to Mets
The New York Mets got their payback after losing 6-2 to the New York Yankees on Friday, defeating them 3-2 on Saturday thanks to RBI by Pete Alonso, Mark Vientos, and Francisco Lindor.
Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu opened the scoring with a solo homer to right in the bottom of the third inning before Alonso hit an RBI single to left in the top of the fourth. Vientos followed up in the same frame with a sacrifice fly, plating former Yankee Juan Soto.

Cody Bellinger then hit a 432-foot bomb to center in the sixth for the Yankees, tying the game at 2-2. However, Lindor hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, and Edwin Díaz secured the save for the Mets in the bottom of the frame.
Alonso sounded off about the possibility of a Subway World Series this season, via SNY.

"It'd be sick. That'd be probably the best postseason matchup ever because you don't have to go on the road," the four-time All-Star said. "You have seven home games."
"All in the same city, no cross-country flights, no travel, you don't have to worry about dealing with the great wall of traffic out of JFK," he continued. "You don't have to worry about going up there, waiting on the tarmac. You can just stay at home, which is great."
The Yankees defeated the Mets in five games during the 2000 World Series, which was their third straight championship and 26th overall. Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter was named World Series MVP.

Yankees Could Cut Ties With 'Sunk Cost' Marcus Stroman After Injury News
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have to be happy with how their pitching staff has responded to a series of unfortunate injuries. Following spring training setbacks, the team lost franchise ace Gerrit Cole for the season and reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil has remained sidelined. In their absence, the healthy arms have performed admirably, but now they've taken another blow. Ryan Yabrough has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained right oblique, forcing a staff shuffle. In the immediate aftermath, the team called up rookie Allan Winans for his big-league debut. But that injury news could drive some bigger changes to the staff next. "Winans isn't the only starter the Yankees have at their disposal from a depth perspective," Max Goodman noted for "Top pitching prospect Cam Schlittler is in Triple-A as well as vet Carlos Carrasco, who made eight appearances with the big-league club earlier this year. Lefty Brent Headrick has starting experience. He's back in Triple-A after spending some time with the Yankees. Even JT Burbaker, who is currently the long man in the Yankees' bullpen, could be stretched out to start in theory." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees looks on from the dugout during the fifth inning of the game against the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium on September 10, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by) More Satloff/Getty And, given those options, it could be time for the Yankees to part ways with Marcus Stroman. After joining the Yankees on a $37 million deal last winter, Stroman has struggled in pinstripes. He made just three starts this year, posting a harsh 11.57 ERA, before suffering a knee injury. If the team is optimistic about its other depth options as replacements for Yarbrough, it might opt to cut ties with Stroman at this point. "Being comfortable with that crew means getting rid of Stroman entirely becomes more of a possibility," Goodman added. "At this stage, it's easier to swallow his salary for the rest of the year, a sunk cost." Going the rest of the year without a return to the rotation would be a disappointing end to Stroman's tenure with the Yankees, but a surprisingly effective pitching staff even amid several injuries might mean there's no room left for him.
