Mets Make Trade Decision After Brutal Injury Setbacks: Report

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Mets relinquished the lead in the National League East division as their losing streak grew to six games, including two series sweeps in a row, on Thursday. Now the team will face the division rival Philadelphia Phillies with one of its biggest strengths becoming a sudden weakness thanks to a surge of brutal pitcher injuries. In recent weeks, the Mets have lost frontline starters Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill to the injured list, with Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea still working their ways toward season debuts and Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn suddenly struggling on the mound. "For months, the Mets enjoyed the benefits of an uncommonly deep cache of starting pitching depth," Anthony DiComo wrote for "They placed faith in a slew of offseason acquisitions and mostly succeeded in keeping them healthy. That depth is now being depleted at a rapid rate." The Mets can still hope that their healthy arms bounce back in effectiveness, that Manaea and Montas return with a vengeance and that Senga and Megill require minimum recovery before rejoining the rotation. But in the meantime, the team has reportedly made a decision about where it stands on adding another starting pitcher before the midseason trade deadline. The Brewers defeated the Mets 5-2. (Photo by) More McIsaac/Getty "The Mets still lead MLB in starter ERA (2.95) but expect to be looking at starters at the deadline," according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. At this point, it's hard to say what arms will be available on the market. Heyman noted that Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates are decidedly unavailable, while Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers is a "long shot." More questionable options, like Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins and Adrian Houser of the Chicago White Sox, seem likely to move for the right price. So, there are still some significant details to figure out, but it appears the Mets will be looking to add to what was recently a position of depth before it is too late. Free Agency Idea Sees Mets 4-Time All-Star Bolt for Red Sox

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox reportedly saved over $250 million by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. They could be very active in free agency now that they have some financial flexibility. Boston's top priority will likely be to keep Alex Bregman in a Red Sox uniform. He was slashing .299/.385/.553 before his injury and is reportedly likely to opt out. However, even after paying Bregman, the Red Sox will have money to go after some big names in free agency. They have a need at first base, and FanSided's Drew Koch suggested they go after Pete Alonso. "Pete Alonso's two-year, $54 million deal with the New York Mets contains a player option for next season," wrote Koch. "Seeing as how Alonso is hitting .293/.390/.570 with a 174 OPS+ this season, he's bound to opt out of his current deal. Alonso bet on himself after receiving little interest on the open market this past winter and should be on the Red Sox's radar." MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - OCTOBER 03: Pete Alonso #20 of the New York Mets rounds the bases after hitting a home run in the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers during Game Three of the Wild Card Series at American Family Field on October 03, 2024 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. MoreAlonso is having a phenomenal year at the plate, and like Bregman, will likely look for a better deal on the market. As much as the Mets would like to keep him around, they already showed they are unwilling to commit to him long-term, and their payroll is already high. However, the Red Sox can afford him thanks to Devers' contract being off their books. Since 2019, only Aaron Judge has hit more home runs than Alonso. He and Bregman manning the corners at Fenway Park next season could be a huge boost for the Red Sox. The Red Sox will also need to find some pitching before next season. However, they could use their surplus of outfielders to trade for some pitchers. More MLB: Poaching $80 Million Yankees Superstar Would Be Red Sox's Wildest Pivot Yet

Braves General Manager Sends Definitive Final Word on Chris Sale Trade Rumors

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. "Will. Not. Happen. Bold, italicize it, caps." Those were the words of Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos on the radio ahead of the team's win against the Mets on Wednesday when the rumors were brought up about the organization trading Chris Sale. Sale would certainly be a hot commodity, but Anthopoulos made it very clear the southpaw wouldn't be dealt away despite the team being several games under .500 this season. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 18: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves reacts during the ninth inning against the New York Mets at Truist Park on June 18, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 18: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves reacts during the ninth inning against the New York Mets at Truist Park on June 18, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia."Zero (chance)," Anthopoulos said on 680 "The Fan". "I've seen the speculation and that's why -- it's completely ridiculous to me. We're not selling, especially someone that has club control beyond the current year. Will not happen." Sale has recorded a 2.52 ERA this season for the Braves through his first 15 starts. Even at 36 years old, he's one of the best pitchers in the game and gives his team a chance to win every time he takes the mound. Anthopoulos doubled down and even gave Braves fans some insight into what may happen in the near future. "I never make definitive statements unless I'm going to stick to them," said Anthopoulos. "Because once you make definitive statements and then you go back on them, you're a liar and you're done. ... Will. Not. Happen. Bold, italicize it, caps. So much so, that I'm trying to make a trade now in June just to signal to everybody, 'Hey, we will not sell.'" It's not very often you see a general manager go as far as telling the fanbase they'll add someone to silence rumors about the team's ace being traded away. However, it's safe to say at this point any teams that got excited about Sale potentially being on the market need to go back to the drawing board and find a new deadline target.
