The New York Yankees have to be happy with how their pitching staff has responded to a series of unfortunate injuries.
Following spring training setbacks, the team lost franchise ace Gerrit Cole for the season and reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil has remained sidelined. In their absence, the healthy arms have performed admirably, but now they've taken another blow.
Ryan Yabrough has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained right oblique, forcing a staff shuffle. In the immediate aftermath, the team called up rookie Allan Winans for his big-league debut. But that injury news could drive some bigger changes to the staff next.
"Winans isn't the only starter the Yankees have at their disposal from a depth perspective," Max Goodman noted for NJ.com. "Top pitching prospect Cam Schlittler is in Triple-A as well as vet Carlos Carrasco, who made eight appearances with the big-league club earlier this year. Lefty Brent Headrick has starting experience. He's back in Triple-A after spending some time with the Yankees. Even JT Burbaker, who is currently the long man in the Yankees' bullpen, could be stretched out to start in theory."

And, given those options, it could be time for the Yankees to part ways with Marcus Stroman.
After joining the Yankees on a $37 million deal last winter, Stroman has struggled in pinstripes. He made just three starts this year, posting a harsh 11.57 ERA, before suffering a knee injury. If the team is optimistic about its other depth options as replacements for Yarbrough, it might opt to cut ties with Stroman at this point.
"Being comfortable with that crew means getting rid of Stroman entirely becomes more of a possibility," Goodman added. "At this stage, it's easier to swallow his salary for the rest of the year, a sunk cost."
Going the rest of the year without a return to the rotation would be a disappointing end to Stroman's tenure with the Yankees, but a surprisingly effective pitching staff even amid several injuries might mean there's no room left for him.

Yankees Blockbuster 2-for-1 Trade Scenario Brings $70 Million All-Star to Infield

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees entered Monday with a 2 1/2-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East lead. However, their infield could use some upgrades. After Oswaldo Cabrera's injury, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has taken over at third base and DJ LeMahieu has seen most of the work at second base. However, LeMahieu's bat leaves plenty to be desired, his defense at second base is not the best and Chisholm is a better defender at second base than in the hot corner. LeMahieu is hitting .255 through 32 games, but his OPS is .684. Heavy's Cole Shelton proposed this trade that would bring All-Star third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies to the Yankees: Yankees receive: Ryan McMahon Rockies receive: Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (Yankees No. 6 prospect) and Henry Lalane (Yankees No. 9 prospect) CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 30: Ryan McMahon #24 of the Colorado Rockies celebrates in the dugout after scoring in the second inning from a balk from Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed... CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 30: Ryan McMahon #24 of the Colorado Rockies celebrates in the dugout after scoring in the second inning from a balk from Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on June 30, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. MoreMcMahon signed a six-year, $70 million deal with the Rockies in 2022. Coming into this season, he had hit 20-plus home runs in every full season since 2019. This year, he is hitting just .222, but his OPS is .737 and he has 12 home runs. He was an All-Star for the first time in his career last year, and could give the Yankees' offense a huge boost. Perhaps playing on a competitive team could help his batting average as well. McMahon would slot in at third base, allowing Chisholm to play at second base and LeMahieu to be on the bench. Those moves would upgrade the Yankees' offense, defense and bench, all by adding one player. He is under club control through 2027, so the Yankees would not have to worry about finding a new third baseman in the offseason. On the other hand, if they feel like infielder George Lombard Jr., the team's top prospect, is ready to play in the big leagues next year, McMahon's club control makes him a valuable trade chip. Highly Sought NL Slugger Would Bring Huge Upgrade to Yankees Lineup

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees desperately need to add an infielder this season. With Oswaldo Cabrera suffering a gruesome leg injury earlier in the season, manager Aaron Boone's been left with few options across the infield. It's very likely the Bronx Bombers will turn to the trade block to find a solid option at the hot corner this season. Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly recently suggested the Yankees could swing a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez to fill the massive hole at third base in the Bronx. TORONTO, ON - JUNE 19: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates a single against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June 19,... TORONTO, ON - JUNE 19: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates a single against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June 19, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. More"Jazz Chisholm Jr. plays an adequate third base (minus-2 defensive runs saved), but he grades out better at his natural position of second base (three DRS)," Kelly wrote. "Acquiring a third base upgrade that allows the 27-year-old to just play second base would be a wise move for New York general manager Brian Cashman. "To that end, the Yankees—and just about every other contending team in baseball—will be hoping the Arizona Diamondbacks decide to become sellers. Can you imagine how much of an upgrade having Eugenio Suárez in this lineup would be over late-career DJ LeMahieu or Oswald Peraza?" Suarez would be the dream option for the Yankees. Not only is he on an affordable contract, but he's in the midst of a great season. The slugger has 25 home runs and a 2.7 WAR through 77 games. He could eclipse 50 home runs and post a WAR over 5.0 on the season if he stays healthy and continues to crush the ball. Adding this kind of production alongside the talent in the Yankees' lineup would be devastating for the rest of the league, especially the American League East. Blue Jays' Max Scherzer Expected to Return From IL Wednesday

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for Toronto at Cleveland on Wednesday, manager John Schneider said after the Blue Jays' 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday. "He's ready to go," Schneider said of Scherzer, adding that the veteran right-hander will likely be capable of throwing as many as 90 pitches. Scherzer was declared ready to return after throwing between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday morning. "Really, really excited to have him back," Schneider said. "That's a huge, huge, obviously, addition to us. It's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week." At Columbus last Wednesday, Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4.1 innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo. The previous Friday, Scherzer struck out eight in 4.1 scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester. The 40-year-old Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. He left his Toronto debut against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of a separate injury: inflammation in his thumb. Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his troublesome thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29, two weeks before his first rehab appearance. He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts for Texas last season, starting the year on the injured list while recovering from lower back surgery. Scherzer said earlier this season that his sore thumb, which impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was also an issue in 2024. Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer has a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA in 467 games, including 458 starts. He has 3,408 strikeouts in 2,881 innings, second among active pitchers behind Justin Verlander and 101 strikeouts away from joining the top-10 all-time.
