Florida softball's first-year standout named NFCA Freshman of the Year
Florida softball outfielder Taylor Shumaker was named the NFCA Freshman of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Tuesday night at the 2025 NCAA Women's College World Series banquet in Oklahoma City.
The first-year standout was honored with the award based on a unanimous decision, making her the second-ever Gator to win it. The other to achieve the same accolade was outfielder Amanda Lorenz in 2016.

Shumaker is batting .389 and leads the team with 22 home runs, 72 runs scored, 17 doubles, and an .818 slugging percentage heading into the Women's College World Series; her 86 RBI so far this spring are tied for the best mark in the NCAA. She has also drawn 40 walks and is 18-for-19 in stolen base attempts.
The outfielder from Fullerton, California, is currently tied for the Florida single-season record in both home runs and RBI.
The NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes.

Ohio State softball 2026 conference schedule unveiled
Looking forward to 𝐁𝟏𝐆 things in 2026.@OhioStAthletics | #GoBucks It was an overachieving year for the Ohio State softball team this past season. Despite losing a lot of key players, new head coach Kirin Kumar was able to lead the team to an offensive explosion in which the Buckeyes led the country in home runs, runs scored, and a few other categories. This past week, the Big Ten unveiled the conference schedule for the 2026 softball season, so we got a look at who the Buckeyes will play next season and where they will do it. Ohio State will host four home series in the conference and hit the road for four others. Here's how it'll all look next season. WATCH: Ohio State basketball guard Taison Chatman appears to be recovering well
TC comeback season 𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 🔋#GoBucks | #FightToTheEnd The Ohio State basketball team has been going through its summer workouts and showing some of the audio and video from the start of what it hopes will be the building blocks to a successful return to the NCAA Tournament this season after missing it for the third year in a row last year. Optimism seems to be abounding with the health of the team, and with the mixture of incoming talent through the transfer portal and returning scoring and athleticism, the Buckeyes were able to retain. One guy, however, OSU did not have the services of last year is guard Taison Chatman. He tore his ACL during spring workouts last season and has been recovering after surgery, taking a redshirt year last year. If he can come back healthy, he could add some needed shooting touch and ball handling that is sorely needed. And, but the looks of some video shared on the Ohio State X account, it sure looks like Chatman is getting around pretty good and scoring buckets in some of the controlled scrimmage sessions. Take a look at Chatman in some highlights that should give everyone some excitement for what he could bring to the floor this season. Many people forget about Chatman as an option, but if he can be another option to score, handle the ball, and provide depth, he could be a pleasant surprise this year. Florida Football Preview 2025: Billy Napier Has His Best Gator Team Yet - But Is It Enough?
Florida is supposed to be playing for national the program of Spurrier, and Urban, and Tebow, and fun, and 'n', and gun, and spread, and Wuerffel - and basketball national titles - and Billy Napier was and is supposed to be the guy who came in and got everything back to rough has it been? Starting with the final season under Dan Mullen, the 26 losses mark the worst four-year run of Gator football since 1978 to 1981, and there was a 0-10-1 campaign in that mix. And following a 49-17 loss to Texas in mid-November, Florida appeared to be destined for its first four-season losing run since the then the offense clicked, the defense didn't allow more than 17 points in any of the final four games, Napier came up with a strong recruiting class, and now there's hope again that the big production is about to first, Florida just has to get closer to the pin against the good teams. This is the best squad yet under Napier. It was rebuilt to this point with a strong combination of depth, youth, and talent. There weren't any major losses through the transfer portal that can't be fixed, and there weren't a ton of players coming in other than to patch a few lines are strong, there's a rising superstar at quarterback in DJ Lagway, and the kicking game might be the best in the SEC. But the team needs to be in more tight games to let the special teams be the of the 19 losses under Napier, 12 of them were by double-digits, including four of the five defeats last year. And that's where the bar should be set. Of course Florida needs to be good enough to be a regular in the College Football Playoff, and of course Napier needs to do more, but out of those 19 losses under Napier, 13 were against the elite of the elite that finished with ten wins or this year's schedule might be the toughest of the again, it's Florida. It's supposed to be one of those elites among elites that take down all of the other good programs. It might not happen this year, but 2025 has to be the final season before it does.
