LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a local fishing vessel off Kampung Bakapit waters for failing to report change of skipper. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said MMEA personnel conducting Ops Pluto Timur and Ops Tiris in the area intercepted the vessel and upon inspection found it failed to comply with the rules requiring it to report any change of skipper. 'MMEA views this non-compliance seriously as it is closely related to navigation safety and control of local fishing activities. 'Any change of skipper must be reported to ensure the licence and qualifications of the skipper are valid and recognised,' he said. The vessel was brought back to Lahad Datu Fishery jetty and handed over to the Lahad Datu Zone MMEA investigation officer for further action. The case is being investigated under the Sabah Ports and Harbour Enactment 2002. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: A youth-led assembly over the weekend drew concern after several participants engaged in actions that were deemed excessive and Sabah Community Club Deputy President Steve Johnny Mositun ( pic ) said while freedom of expression is a democratic right, the conduct of a few individuals unsettled members of the public. He criticised the burning of posters during the rally, calling it culturally inappropriate and damaging to Sabah's image as a harmonious state. Steve added the incident disrupted public order, caused traffic congestion, and hurt local businesses while potentially affecting tourist confidence. He thanked the police for maintaining control throughout the event and urged youths to channel their energy into unity and responsible civic action. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rally: 13 UMS students may be suspended or expelled under Auku
Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Thirteen Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students identified in a recent rally may face disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, under the Universities and University College Act (Amended) 2012 (Auku). UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said only two students were directly involved in burning a caricature of the Prime Minister, an act the university strongly condemns. He said a disciplinary committee comprising appointed academicians would be formed soon to investigate the matter and determine appropriate action under Auku. The committee will call each student individually to give their explanation regarding the incident that occurred during Sunday's rally. Kasim added that legal advice from the Higher Education Ministry's Legal Advisor will also be sought before any final decision is made. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
