Rally: 13 UMS students may be suspended or expelled under Auku

By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Thirteen Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students identified in a recent rally may face disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, under the Universities and University College Act (Amended) 2012 (Auku). UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said only two students were directly involved in burning a caricature of the Prime Minister, an act the university strongly condemns. He said a disciplinary committee comprising appointed academicians would be formed soon to investigate the matter and determine appropriate action under Auku. The committee will call each student individually to give their explanation regarding the incident that occurred during Sunday's rally. PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested another Sabah assemblyman in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. According to an MACC source, the man, in his 40s and serving as a state assistant minister, was detained around 9.30am today after giving a statement at the Sabah MACC office. 'The suspect, who also serves as an assistant minister, is believed to have committed the offence between 2023 and 2024. 'Investigations also found that he allegedly asked for and received around RM150,000 from an individual with a 'Datuk' title, purportedly to help facilitate mining licence applications in the state,' the source said. MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the arrest, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. He said the suspect had been released on RM50,000 bail without deposit and is expected to be charged soon. Advertisement The alleged scandal was reported in 2024 after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. RM8 million CBT trial of Fashion Valet founders to begin April 2026

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The sessions court has set 15 days for trial next year for the case of Fashion Valet Sdn Bhd founders Vivy Sofinas and her husband Fadzarudin Shah Anuar, who are facing charges of criminal breach of trust involving RM8 million in investment funds from Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Permodalan Nasional Bhd. Judge Rosli Ahmad set the trial dates for April 13 to 17, May 18 to 22, and June 8 to 12. 'The trial will run for 15 days, and the court has set the next case mention for Oct 27,' said Rosli. Lawyer M Athimulan is representing the couple. Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin asked the court to fix the trial dates agreed upon by both the prosecution and defence. Wan Shaharuddin also told the court that the prosecution would call 26 witnesses to testify. Advertisement The accused, both 37, were not present in court today as they were exempted from attending. On Dec 5 last year, Vivy and Fadzarudin pleaded not guilty to committing CBT in their capacity as directors of Fashion Valet. They were accused of misappropriating investment funds entrusted to them by Khazanah and PNB by transferring RM8 million from Fashion Valet's company account to 30 Maple Sdn Bhd without the approval of the board of directors. The offence was allegedly committed at Public Bank Bhd, Bukit Damansara Branch, 36-40 Medan Setia 2, Plaza Damansara, Bukit Damansara, here, on Aug 21, 2018. The charge, framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, provides for a minimum sentence of two years and a maximum of 20 years in jail, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. Israel says struck military sites in west Iran

The military said in a statement that more than 15 fighter jets had struck the Kermanshah area in western Iran, 'neutralising a number of surface-to-surface missile launch and storage sites aimed toward Israeli territory'. In an earlier statement, it said the air force was 'currently striking military infrastructure sites in Kermanshah in Iran'. Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran on June 13 targeting its missile and nuclear facilities, as well as military leaders and security services.
