This AI system found a potential cure for blindness

People developing frontier AI models often speculate about how amazing the world will be once AGI and AI superintelligence are available. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's recent essay is the latest example of that. Once superhuman intelligence is reached, the AI will make scientific discoveries that are beyond our reach for now, significantly improving our lives and well-being. There's also the possibility of AI taking over the world, of course. But we don't like to entertain it too much.
Once that age of AI superintelligence arrives, we might see cancer eradicated, or a cure for diabetes and other types of illnesses that impact hundreds of millions of people. One can hope that AI will lead us there, at least.

But we don't have to wait for one AI firm or another to proclaim that AGI is here to see meaningful developments in the field of medicine driven by AI. AGI, by the way, is the intermediate AI step we need to reach before superintelligence.
Researchers from FutureHouse designed an AI system to automate scientific discovery. Called Robin, it's a scientist's companion that has several AI models to assist with the various stages of a discovery.
Robin AI helped the researchers find a potential cure for a condition called dry age-related macular degeneration (dAMD) that can lead to irreversible blindness in the elderly. As many as 200 million people suffer from dAMD. The Robin AI system helped the scientists come up with a potential treatment by repurposing a drug called ripasudil, which is also used to treat glaucoma.
Robin AI isn't just one large language model. It has three components, each made of separate LLMs that handle specific aspects of the research process:
Crow, Falcon, and Owl perform literature searches and synthesis
Phoenix is responsible for chemical synthesis design
Finch does complex data analysis
The way Robin works is actually brilliant. First, Crow analyzed the relevant literature for dAMD (around 550 studies) and proposed a hypothesis for the study. Crow suggested that enhancing retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) phagocytosis could be a potential treatment for dAMD.
Robin's Falcon then looked at candidate molecules that might be able to achieve the goal above. The RPE layer of cells eats debris from the photoreceptors. RPE failure leads to dAMD. Falcon found 10 candidates that the scientists tested in the lab.
Finally, Finch analyzed the data from the tests that humans ran in the lab. This AI agent found a Rho-kinase (ROCK) inhibitor called Y-27632 would increase RPE phagocytosis in cell cultures.
The research didn't stop here. The scientists had Robin look at the data and propose a new round of testing based on the previous findings.
This time, the AI co-scientist system proposed a genetic experiment. It suggested an RNA-sequencing test to see if the ROCK inhibitor found during the previous stage could induce gene expression changes that would convince the RPE layer to eat more of the debris that builds up.
The new experiment ended with Finch discovering that Y-27632 upregulated ABCA1, a gene that acts as a pump for lipids (cholesterol) in RPE cells. The ROCK inhibitor practically told cells to eject more fat.
Robin looked at the data from the first round of testing and then proposed a second set of drug candidates. The list included ripasudil, a drug that's already approved to treat eye conditions (glaucoma). Ripasudil raised phagocytosis 7.5 times. That is, the drug might increase the rate at which RPE destroys debris significantly. Preventing that accumulation would prevent blindness.
The entire process took only two and a half months, allowing researchers to discover a potential cure for blindness much faster than traditional methods that do not involve AI models.
The scientists picked the dAMD project to put the Robin AI to the test, but they could have used any disease that impacts a large number of people.
That's not to say that ripasudil will become the standard dAMD treatment to prevent blindness. But it's very likely that doctors will consider the therapy once additional tests prove the AI's hypothesis and solution are correct. Only after human trials are successful will the drug be used for dAMD.
What's great about this process is that Robin found a drug that's already approved for use rather than discovering a new molecule that might need years of additional testing.
The Robin experiment isn't the first to use AI for repurposing existing drugs to treat other conditions. But this system is more complex than having an AI read massive amounts of studies to find side effects in existing drugs that might treat illnesses other than the conditions they were made for.
Here, one of Robin's LLMs does the reading and suggests solutions. The other AI models in Robin come up with molecules and then analyze the data from lab experiments. The humans are needed only to run the experiments, verify the output from AI models, and tweak algorithms and prompts.
I wouldn't be surprised if similar research leads to the discovery of brand-new therapies for all sorts of conditions in the future.
Also important is the researchers' decision to release Robin as an open-source project. Others might use it to run similar experiments or build their own AI systems that can act as co-scientists.

'Personalised, bite-sized and quick – that's how younger audiences want their news, and AI tools are stepping in to deliver exactly that,' Mukherjee noted. Beyond reading headlines, many readers are turning to AI for more complex tasks: 27 percent use it to summarise news articles, 24 percent for translations, and 21 percent for recommendations on what to read next. Ford isn't going to love RAM's new warranty offering

Starting with the 2026 model year, RAM is doubling down on its comeback strategy by offering something no other full-size truck brand does: a 10-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. That's right-twice the current coverage on gas-powered RAM trucks, and a full five years longer than what Ford and GM currently offer. It's not just the half-ton RAM 1500 that's getting the extra protection. The new warranty extends to heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, chassis cab trucks, and even the ProMaster commercial van. Buyers of the off-road-ready Power Wagon and high-performance RHO also qualify. The only real exclusions? Fleet buyers and the all-electric ProMaster EV. That means for individual buyers, whether purchasing or leasing, this warranty could be a serious reason to reconsider a Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado. So why the sudden move? According to RAM CEO Tim Kuniskis, the answer is simple: consumer behavior has shifted. Today's truck buyers are financing over longer terms and holding onto their vehicles longer than ever-12.6 years on average. Yet no truck brand has changed their warranty to reflect that reality. "We think this gives people a real reason to switch," Kuniskis said. And he's not wrong. Truck buyers are famously brand-loyal, with roughly 75–80% sticking with the same make when they buy again. But loyalty can shift if one brand clearly takes better care of its owners-especially in the long haul. Offering a longer warranty also sends a strong message: RAM believes in the durability of its new powertrains. That includes the returning 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, now offered once again as an option on the 2026 RAM 1500, and the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six that debuted just last year. RAM is coming off a rocky year. The 2025 RAM 1500 launch hit production delays, early trims were priced too high, and removing the V-8 left a bad taste for longtime fans. But the brand is attempting to turn the page. Under new leadership, including Kuniskis' return from retirement, RAM has slashed prices, brought back the HEMI, and even announced a NASCAR comeback for 2026. The company has also rolled out a new marketing push with the tagline "Nothing Stops RAM". This warranty announcement isn't just a sales gimmick; it's part of a larger turnaround strategy designed to restore consumer confidence and boost conquest sales. Ford and Chevy now face a choice: match RAM's warranty or risk looking second-best in a segment where perception matters as much as specs. So far, neither has hinted at making a similar move. That leaves RAM as the sole brand offering a decade of peace of mind on core powertrain components: engine, transmission, transfer case, driveshafts, and axles. And in a world where trucks now cost as much as some luxury cars, that could be a powerful differentiator. If Ford and GM aren't worried yet, they probably should be. Is OpenAI's Deal With Alphabet a Game Changer?

For the last couple of years, OpenAI has relied heavily on Microsoft to supply compute power through the Azure cloud platform. Recently, OpenAI has been exploring new cloud partnerships with Oracle and now Google in an effort to migrate away from Microsoft. Teaming up with OpenAI could be a transformative move for Alphabet as its core search business continues to face pressure. 10 stocks we like better than Alphabet › For more than two years now, ChatGPT developer OpenAI has been at the center of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. The company has raised billions in funding from Microsoft, works closely with leading AI-focused cloud providers such as CoreWeave, and is among the key players pushing a $500 billion domestic AI infrastructure initiative called Project Stargate. Recently, OpenAI found itself in the headlines yet again following news of a major partnership with Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL). Let's explore how OpenAI and Alphabet are teaming up, and assess why this deal could be a game changer. Microsoft's investment in OpenAI wasn't just about raising capital. As part of their partnership, OpenAI became tightly integrated into Microsoft's cloud service, Azure. While Azure's infrastructure has been key to OpenAI maintaining explosive growth over the last two years, recent moves from the ChatGPT maker suggest it's looking to avoid vendor lock-in with Microsoft. For instance, as part of Project Stargate, Oracle is reportedly exploring purchasing several billion dollars worth of Nvidia's newest Blackwell GPU architecture and leasing access to these chips to OpenAI. According to recent reporting, OpenAI's partnership with Alphabet revolves around the same use case as the Oracle deal: accessing compute power through the Google Cloud Platform. As data workloads continue to rise, training and inferencing AI models becomes increasingly sophisticated and costly. Hence, broadening its cloud compute infrastructure beyond Azure is critical for OpenAI. While cloud computing has emerged as a fast-growing business for Alphabet, Google Cloud operates at a much smaller scale than Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). That said, working with OpenAI may look odd from the outside as the platform could be seen as both a technical competitor and existential threat to Google's search business and AI efforts. However, I think there is a more interesting aspect to this relationship whereby Alphabet is hedging the economic profiles of its various platforms. Since ChatGPT emerged, skeptics have been sounding the alarm on Alphabet's internet search business (Google). The bear narrative is that inputting a query into a chatbot such as ChatGPT and receiving a detailed response instantly will turn people away from the traditional search process of Googling something. Although Alphabet continues to own significant surface area on the internet thanks to properties such as Google and YouTube, some search trends are beginning to indicate that ChatGPT and other large language models may be encroaching on Google's dominance. In turn, Alphabet's search advertising empire may be about to crack. While the exact details about OpenAI and Google Cloud's relationship are under tight wraps, I have some ideas as to why this deal could actually make a lot of strategic sense for Alphabet. In a scenario where OpenAI and its peers begin to erode Google search -- thereby taking a toll on Alphabet's advertising revenue -- Alphabet is still able to capture some downstream monetization. What I mean by that is Alphabet's cloud infrastructure business captures revenue that is otherwise lost from the consumer-facing advertising segment of Google search. In turn, this new stream of cloud revenue can help tighten the gap with AWS and Azure. In addition, a far more lucrative opportunity for Alphabet could be to hone Google's own AI capabilities by gaining visibility into OpenAI's workloads. Granted, this last point may be wishful thinking for the time being, as it's not entirely known what Alphabet will be privy to with regards to accessing OpenAI's data flow. In the chart below, investors can see that Alphabet trades at a considerable discount compared to its cloud hyperscaler peers on a forward earnings basis. The valuation disparity between Alphabet and its cohorts could suggest an overly bearish narrative, rooted in two primary areas. First, some investors may be of the opinion that Alphabet entered the cloud computing race far too late and will never catch up to Amazon or Microsoft. Second, the rise of OpenAI has been labeled an existential threat to Google for years now -- and I think Alphabet's steep discount relative to its peers is pricing in such a narrative. As I outlined above, though, the irony from Alphabet's deal with OpenAI is that the company might actually have unlocked a backdoor channel to continue thriving even as its core search business faces mounting pressure. To me, the deal with OpenAI is a transformative game changer for Alphabet in the long run and I see the stock as a no-brainer buy right now.
