Lyon predicted XI v Angers: Alexandre Lacazette to start in final game for the club

Yahoo17-05-2025

As has already been confirmed, Alexandre Lacazette will leave Olympique Lyonnais this summer, upon the expiry of his contract with the club.
Against SCO Angers, Lyon's captain is expected to lead the line. There is still an outside chance of OL earning UEFA Champions League football, although that chance is highly remote. Currently seventh, they will have to rely on results elsewhere going their way if they are to move any higher.

For Les Gones' finale against Angers, Paulo Fonseca has a large squad to pick from. Ernest Nuamah suffered a major injury last month and will be absent for much of 2025, whilst Clinton Mata came off during last weekend's match against AS Monaco. He has not recovered and will miss out for OL.
Lyon likely line-up v Angers
Lucas Perri; Nicolás Tagliafico, Moussa Niakhaté, Duje Caleta-Car, Ainsley Maitland-Niles; Tanner Tessmann, Jordan Veretout; Malick Fofana, Thiago Almada, Rayan Cherki; Alexandre Lacazette. (L'Éq)

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Botafogo upsets PSG, Messi leads Inter Miami over Porto

The 2025 Club World Cup continued to bring some excitment on Thursday. As Groups A and B completed the second of three group stage games, the round brought four wins, including a key comeback and one stunning upset. After a pair of ties to kick off the stage, Group A remains up for grabs with wins for Palmeiras and Inter Miami on Thursday. Group B, meanwhile, was also thrown into chaos: Though Atlético Madrid cruised to a win over the Seattle Sounders to keep their hopes alive, Botafogo shocked PSG with a narrow win to move ahead in the group. Thursday's FIFA Club World Cup results Palmeiras 2, Al Ahly 0: An own goal opened up the scoring for Palmeiras and allowed them to take the lead in Group A with four points. After Al Ahly's Wessam Abou Ali unintentionally grazed the ball past his keeper in the 49th minute, Jose Manuel Lopez padded the lead with a goal in the 59th. The Brazilian side scored with their only shot on target (10 total). Al Ahly failed to get on the scoreboard, despite having eight shots with two in-frame. Advertisement Inter Miami 2, Porto 1: Lionel Messi's magic left foot sealed the deal for Inter Miami as they overcame Porto to secure their first win of the Club World Cup. A beautifully placed free kick from just outside the box broke the deadlock from Porto's Samu Aghehowa in the 8th minute and Miami's Talasco Segovia in the 47th. The Argentine curled the ball over the Porto wall and past Claudio Ramos to take three points for the Herons. Atlético Madrid 3, Sounders 1: It only took 11 minutes for Atlético to break through on the lopsided matchup, with midfielder Pablo Barrios giving the team a 1-0 lead off a strong, bouncing strike. But for a while, the Sounders stayed in the game, thwarting several key opportunities to keep Atlético from adding to the score in the first half. Just a few minutes into the second, another bouncing shot gave Atlético the 2-0 lead, as halftime substitute Axel Witsel hit a header off the rebound. Though the Sounders struck right back, with Albert Rusnák getting a goal to cut into Atlético's lead, Barrios hit his second of the game to take a 3-1 lead. Seattle may have put up a fight, but in the end, Atlético was simply the better team. Advertisement Botafogo 1, Paris Saint-Germain 0: Group B is quickly turning into the wildest group in the tournament, as Botafogo picked up a thrilling upset over PSG to throw the standings out of order. Botafogo stunned PSG with an early 1-0 lead, with striker Igor Jesus scoring in the 36th minute. PSG, the reigning UEFA champions, spent the rest of the game desperately trying to equalize, but could not break Botafogo's back line. The Brazilian club held on to secure the brilliant 1-0 win — the first real upset of the tournament so far — and move to the top of the group. PSG stunned by Botafogo in Club World Cup upset

Botafogo players celebrate after beating Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup on Thursday (Frederic J. Brown) Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 1-0 Club World Cup defeat against Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday in a hardfought battle between the reigning champions of Europe and South America. A first-half goal from Brazilian international Igor Jesus proved the difference as Botafogo all but sealed a place in the knockout rounds at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. Advertisement French champions PSG are widely regarded as one of the favourites for FIFA's 32-team tournament after a dazzling season which culminated with a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last month. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side to reach the last 16 were stymied by a resilient performance from their opponents from Rio de Janeiro. Paris Saint-Germain picked up where they had left off in Sunday's 4-0 Group B rout of Atletico Madrid, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia testing Botafogo goalkeeper John with an early curling effort after just two minutes. But that early effort was as close as PSG came to scoring in a scrappy first half punctuated by a series of niggling fouls that prevented the European champions from settling into their passing game. Advertisement Botafogo's midfield trio of Marlon Freitas, Gregore and Allan worked tirelessly to close down Vitinha, denying the skilful PSG playmaker time and space to launch attacks despite dominating possession. Instead it was Botafogo who took the lead with a goal against the run of play on 36 minutes. Jefferson Savarino's perfectly weighted through ball split the PSG defence and sent Jesus racing through on goal. The Botafogo striker did brilliantly to wrongfoot the covering Willian Pacho before sweeping a shot that took a slight deflection past PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on its way into the net. Advertisement PSG continued to dominate possession through the second half, and spent long periods camped in the final third. But Botafogo's defence held firm and the result leaves the Brazilians firmly on course for the last 16, with a final group game against Atletico Madrid to come in Pasadena on Monday. rcw/as
