Netflix fantasy series so good fans 'don't trust' streaming service

Daily Record5 days ago

Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone was cancelled in November after two seasons and fans of the show have been vocal about their frustration and disappointment
The Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone has captivated many, amassing a solid fanbase over its two-season run on the streaming service.
Adapted from Leigh Bardugo's fantasy novels and brought to life on Netflix by Eric Heisserer, Shadow and Bone made its debut on the platform in 2021. The series was met with high praise from both viewers and critics, leading to a second season in March 2023. However, by November of the same year, it was announced that the streaming behemoth had decided to cancel the show.

Set in the fantastical Grishaverse, Shadow and Bone tells the tale of Alina Starkov, an orphan turned cartographer, who uncovers her latent magical Grisha powers. As the narrative progresses, it becomes clear that Alina holds the key to salvaging her war-ravaged world, finding herself up against formidable dark forces.

The inaugural season adapted Bardugo's 2012 novel Shadow and Bone, while also incorporating an original plotline centred around the Crows - a lovable gang of criminals at the heart of Bardugo's Six of Crows duology, reports the Mirror US.
Despite escalating fan support, Shadow and Bone was axed after just two seasons, a decision that has undoubtedly left its followers devastated.
One Reddit user tried to rationalise the show's cancellation by stating: "Because it didn't have Stranger Things success. They cancel many expensive shows if they're not as popular as they want them to be. The show was first place in my country for at least a month (both seasons) so I don't get Netflix's choice."
Further observations were made with another comment: "It seems like it's one of the most viewed shows they ever canceled. The budget must be crazy."
Disappointed fans divulged how the axing of the show led them to cancel their Netflix subscriptions: "I had an HD Netflix account. I cancelled it as soon as I read that Shadow and Bone S3 and Six of Crows weren't getting made. When the exit survey asked why I was canceling, I selected 'other' and typed in 'Shadow and Bone canceled'."

Mistrust towards Netflix was also voiced as one Redditor explained their hesitation to invest in new series: "I mean, this isn't the first time Netflix has given us a fantastic S1 of something, an alright S2 and then used that as an excuse to cancel the series before it wraps up. It's gotten to the point where I don't trust them enough to start most of their original series. I know it probably won't do anything but I don't think it hurts to show them that people have noticed and that they're tired of being left hanging."
Amid disbelief, a user pointed out a seemingly illogical decision by the streaming giant: "Absolutely baffling that they dropped this show but renewed Emily in Paris for a fifth season."
Some ardent supporters of the series have launched petitions to contest its cancellation, with one newcomer to the Shadow and Bone fan community taking a stand: "I'm new to the Shadow and Bone fanbase. Even more new to the disappointment of no season 3. So I created a petition. I'm aware that many petitions were already made. But I haven't seen one from this year yet. Let's try again and see if we can change Netflix's mind. No mourners, no funerals!!"

Shoppers just realising ‘favourite ever' 80s sweet has been AXED leaving them gutted

SHOPPERS are just realising their "favourite ever" 80s sweet has been axed - and they're gutted. The sought-after Wonka Everlasting Gobstoppers, dubbed Heartbreakers, are no longer in stock across stores in the UK. The white, pink, and red heart-shaped treats changed in colour and flavour with each layer, making them a hit among sweet lovers. Originally imported from the US, these 340g 80s sweets scanned at tills for £3.50. However, some shoppers are only now discovering that the popular sweet treat has been discontinued. One user took to Reddit, writing: "I just learned this has been discontinued, correct me if I'm wrong. ps what's a good replacement?" The post attracted several comments from disappointed shoppers who were also unaware that the popular treat had been axed. This shopper wrote: "I was obsessed with these like 4 years ago. Why would they discontinue them?" "The spree hearts were my favourite ever," added another. A third said: "I keep hoping they'll bring them back." "I just found out the bad news too! I'm devastated," a fourth added. It comes after M&S confirmed it had axed a beloved snack - particularly popular with a pint. 6 ways to get the biggest bargains in B&M It came after a disgruntled shopper took to social media to inquire about its whereabouts. They said on X: "@Marksandspencer have you stopped selling the Sweet Chilli Combo Mix snack? "Been to several stores today and no sign of them. Please say they've not been discontinued!!" The Sweet Chilli Combo Mix was a selection of crispy potato and corn snacks - which came in the shape of tubes, wheels and flat crisps. Fans deemed them the perfect sweet and spicy morsel to enjoy alongside a cold drink. But their worst fears were confirmed when M&S employee Simon weighed in on the thread. He said: "It looks like we have discontinued this flavour, sorry about that." It follows Nestle confirming they pulled a new type of Rowntree's sweets just one year after launch. And B&M fans are in a frenzy after spying retro sweets back on shelves. Why are products axed or recipes changed? ANALYSIS by chief consumer reporter James Flanders. Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether. They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers. There are several reasons why this could be done. For example, government regulation, like the "sugar tax," forces firms to change their recipes. Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs. They may opt for a cheaper alternative, especially when costs are rising to keep prices stable. For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018. It has recently returned after six years away but as a sugar-free version. Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year. Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks. While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose.

'TV fans compare our show to Netflix's steamiest hit – ours stands out'

With the hit Apple TV Plus show The Buccaneers returning for a second season, the cast has addressed fan comparisons to other hit period dramas like Bridgerton The Victorian-era series, based on Edith Wharton's unfinished novel, follows a group of New York women in the 1870s sent to London to find husbands and high status. As Conchita (Alisha Boe), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), Mabel (Josie Totah), Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and Nan (Kristine Froseth) arrive on British shores, they encounter heartache, chaotic love triangles and scandals that could bring ruin to their families. Set to a modern soundtrack and centred around themes of female empowerment, it joins a growing ilk of period dramas with a 21st-century twist, the most widely known of which is no doubt Netflix's Bridgerton. Although the shows are regularly compared by viewers across social media, according to Mabel star Josie Totah, there's plenty to The Buccaneers that sets it apart from the crowd, as she told Metro. 'I love Bridgerton, I love Nichola Coughlan, but I think what our show does so well is it looks and feels like the perfect line between what feels period and also what's relatable to today. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'We do wear costumes, but it's not 'costumey'. We do have love story scenes, but it's not super 'fantasy-y'. It feels like these people are people you know and they feel reachable, and you're not watching a storybook just put on TV,' the actor explained. In The Buccaneers, Mabel is a lesbian battling against societal norms, navigating an illicit relationship with a woman and still showing up for their friends in their times of need – the perfect example of a multi-layered character. 'This period is beautiful, but it's also tangible and I think our relationships are really palpable and these characters are relatable and that's what separates it,' she concluded. Although the first season offered plenty of steamy scenes for viewers to sink their teeth into, which only heightened its comparisons to the Netflix series, the stars believe there could be a lot more action. Despite already being convinced by the show, the second season still managed to take me by surprise by never going where I expected it to. Instead, the show flies off in a completely different, often more refreshing, direction. It's clear in this second season that the show takes the responsibility of portraying both the joy and hardships that women faced in this period seriously. The Buccaneers allows those moments of solidarity and the celebration of womanhood in all of its glory to shine while still giving the space and depth to explore the tougher aspects, always ending on a hopeful note. 'I wish we had more steamy scenes,' Alisha admitted, joking that they'll report this request to 'Apple'. As for the show's ability to tell a nuanced story, it's a sentiment echoed by her co-star Imogen Waterhouse, who praised the storylines for their 'groundedness' and 'relatability'. She plays Nan's sister Jinny, who is forced to flee her abusive husband Lord Seadown (Barney Fishwick) with Nan's lover Guy (Matthew Broome) and her baby in tow. In season two, we see the fallout of this decision as Jinny and Matthew set up a new incognito life in Italy. As Imogen explained, there's plenty more to come for this plotline. '[In season one Seadown] was looking for a wife he could control… and you see it come to a boiling point in season two. 'Even though she's made this escape, it doesn't mean 'oh, everything's fine, it's over.' Actually, there is still something that really draws her back to him because, without him, she has no power, and she's in hiding forever. 'It's really hard even in these times for women to leave. Especially in the Victorian times, legally they couldn't, so it adds a layer.' As for what lies in store for Nan and Guy, right from the get-go, they are separated by an entire ocean, meaning they have 'less screentime together' than last season. How exactly things will pan out, however, remains to be seen. More Trending For now, the cast remains endlessly grateful to the loyal fanbase, many of whom enjoy making fan edits on TikTok with 8,000 videos and counting under the hashtag. 'I doomscroll on TikTok and sometimes it'll pop up and it's a bit strange,' Alisha said, 'When you make a show, you hope at least someone watches it cause that's six months of your life.' As Josie joked: 'I think it's only big on TikTok, I think that's where it shines.' The Buccaneers season one is available to stream on TikTok. The Buccaneers season two, episode one is out now, with new episodes airing every Wednesday. Got a story? Pride of Scotland hosts Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohli are gearing up for the biggest night of the year

The comedy duo can't wait to celebrate Scotland's unsung heroes at our People's oscars. With just one day to go until the Pride of Scotland Awards, hosts Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohli are getting ready to "gie it laldy" for the nation's unsung heroes. The comedy duo are taking the helm again at our People's Oscars and can't wait to give our inspirational 2025 winners a night they will remember forever. ‌ Despite being two of the biggest names in Scottish showbiz both admit when it comes to Pride's incredible unsung heroes, they are the ones who are left starstruck. ‌ Sanjeev, who is one of the standout stars of new Netflix hit Department Q, said: 'The Pride of Scotland Awards are massive and the number of big names who turn out to celebrate our nation's most inspiring people is phenomenal. 'But what the unsung heroes don't realise is that they are the ones who leave the celebrities starstruck because their selfless achievements are far greater. 'As a judge I already know their jaw-dropping stories of bravery and compassion so when you meet them in real life you can't help but be affected. 'They may have eyes like saucers when they see all the stars on the red carpet tomorrow night but mine will be the size of dinner plates when the winners join me and Elaine on stage.' The Still Game star added: 'This will be my third year as host and it's the most fantastic and heart-warming and uplifting event in my calendar. ‌ 'I feel we owe it to all the winners to give them as good a night as possible - it's the least we can do after what they do so selflessly for others." Sanjeev, who starred in BBC hit comedy Dinosaur, admitted he has lost count of all the stand-out moments over the years. He said: 'Last year it was Wilson the miniature Shetland pony in a kilt that really got me. He was wearing two wee pairs of shoes from Build-A-Bear. I truly never thought I would see a pony wearing Converse. ‌ 'His adorable outfit aside - the work Wilson and his owners Elaine and John Sangster do at Therapy Ponies Scotland is incredible. 'Elaine said their wee horses sense when someone needs a boost. I think we should send a whole herd of horses into war zones as everyone would instantly drop their weapons.' ‌ The former River City actor added: 'Another of the 2024 winners who struck a chord with me was John Aitchison, the firefighter who has helped set up the first fire service on Mount Everest. 'The world is getting more insular and intolerant. Just look at Trump deporting anyone who isn't American and then you have Scots guys like John going around the world saying humans are humans and it doesn't matter about the colour of your skin or DNA. That really speaks to me as the son of an immigrant.' From acts of kindness and selfless bravery to raising millions for charity the Daily Record Pride of Scotland Awards with P&O Cruises will salute the nation's unsung heroes. ‌ A host of stars from the worlds of TV, film, music, sport and politics will descend on The Hilton Glasgow tomorrow night to honour the winners. Rob C Nesbitt legend Elaine agrees with Sanjeev about it being one of the most uplifting nights of the year and an antidote to what is going on in the world right now. The gran-of-two, who was given the Freedom of Glasgow earlier this year, said: 'Pride of Scotland brings the light in dark times. ‌ 'There are so many horrific and heartbreaking events happening in the world just now from the situation in the Middle East to the terrible aeroplane crash in India. 'These awards are a reminder to everyone that there is still so much good in the world with folk looking out for their neighbours and going above and beyond to help others in their communities. 'I did a Sunday Mail column for many years and I used to include an 'Angel of the Week' section to highlight the ordinary Scots who are doing extraordinary things. ‌ 'The room tomorrow night will be full to the rafters with 'angels' who are quietly making a massive difference to the world which gladdens my soul and lifts my heart.' She added: 'This is my fifth Pride and like Sanjeev said there have been so many magical moments but one of my all time favourites was in 2023 when the hard man of football Graeme Souness started crying on stage while talking about his hero – Isla Grist. "The teenager has epidermolysis bullosa – a rare and painful skin disorder which causes her skin to burn and blister at the slightest touch. She inspired the football legend to swim the channel and raise £4.5million for drug trials – just incredible. ‌ 'Another standout came in 2022 when I spotted Lulu in the audience and started belting out the first few notes of Shout as a gag. Next thing I knew she was on stage singing her hit and getting everyone to join in - to this day I believe she only did it to stop me singing. 'Last year seeing wee Wilson trotting along the red carpet in his kilt will be something I will never forget - they really are awards like no other.' ‌ Elaine, who became a gran for the second time last year, admitted the Children of Courage get her every year and paid tribute to 2022 winner Zac Gunn who passed away a few weeks ago. She said: 'I have to gird my loins every year to stop myself from greetin.' The kids just melt my heart especially wee Zac who passed away this month just weeks after having a long-awaited lung transplant. I will never forget his huge grin when Paw Patrol came on stage and presented him with his award. 'That wee child fought so hard to live and his death is heartbreaking. My love goes out to his dad Gordon, mum Ashley and brother Jacob.' ‌ Dad-of-three Sanjeev added: 'As a daddy the kids' stories have me in bits every time. Picking the winners from a shortlist is so tough and I feel so guilty - it's like someone telling me I have to pick a favourite child from my own three. 'It's truly astonishing what the Children and Teenagers of Courage bring to this world - such huge altruism from such little people. 'Maybe if adults channelled their less jaded and cynical attitude to life the world would be a better place. Most of these kids are suffering yet they still strive to support and raise funds for others. They are truly remarkable.' ‌ We launched our search for our local heroes of 2025 back in January and were inundated with thousands of nominations from across the nation. Categories include The Emergency Services Award, Teenager of Courage, Young Fundraiser, Outstanding Bravery, The King's Trust Young Achiever, Special Recognition and The P&O Cruises Inspiration Award. One of the biggest names attending tomorrow night's glittering ceremony is Succession legend Brian Cox, who is getting ready to take the stage at the Dundee Rep in new play Make It Happen about the Bank of Scotland's role in the 2008 financial crash. ‌ Other stars who will be honouring the winners include Sheli McCoy aka Sabre, singer Susan Boyle, Star Wars actor Denis Lawson, singers Nathan Evans, Calum Bowie and Cammy Barnes and Strictly's JJ Chalmers and Dr Punam Krishan. Love Island's Paige Turley and Saint Phnx's Stevie Jukes will be going live from the red carpet and presenter Laura Anderson will be manning the Pride of Scotland bar. ‌ First Minister John Swinney will also be there to celebrate the best of Scotland and there will be a performance from Britain's Got Talent finalist Vinnie McKee. - The 2025 Pride of Scotland winners will be revealed in an 8-page pullout in tomorrow's Daily Record - You can catch all the red carpet action on the Pride of Scotland Facebook, Instagram and YouTube page from 5.30pm tomorrow night
