BLERD ALERT! Is A 'White' Black Panther On The Horizon?

When it comes to Black superheroes, many tend to hold King T'Challa, aka the one and only Black Panther, to the highest of standards — he's right up there with Statik Shock, Blade, John Stewart's Green Lantern and his often-depicted wifey, Storm, just to name a few.
It's one of the main reasons why Blerds everywhere have been making quite a ruckus lately in reaction to the release of Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1, a polarizing plot that sees our beloved T'Challa dying on the throne and a whole white son named Ketema stepping up to take his place on the throne.

As the official description given by Marvel reads, 'With T'Challa gone, the future of the Marvel 616 Universe will be determined by a final tribal challenge for the Wakandan throne and the mysterious victor who will change Wakanda, and the Marvel Universe, forever.' With Earth-616 being the primary universe that most Marvel comics pass through, the events of Marvel Knights: The World To Come could prove to be permanent. With that said, many are wondering if art will imitate life and result in a white actor filling the role of Black Panther in place of the late Chadwick Boseman, who helped bring the character to the big screen back in 2018. In the five years since his untimely death due to colon cancer, which also led to his exclusion from the 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , the question has lingered as to whether BP will be recasted (likely), reworked in CGI form (very unlikely) or even retired to the bleachers as a tribute to Boseman (bittersweet). Could the introduction of Ketema be just what Hollywood execs were hoping for in order to get golden boys like Timothée Chalamet, Jacob Elordi or any of the many white counterparts to Michael B. Jordan and Jharrel Jerome a leading role in Wakanda?

'Having a white man under the Black Panther mask obviously won't sit right with many readers, and it would seem that is exactly Marvel's intention. Even without hints that Ketema's actions cause shockwaves through the future, his heinous actions should be enough to make people uncomfortable. The fact that the character is seemingly a Caucasion son of two Black parents only raises more questions. So the question now becomes, will the arrival of T'Challa's son mean a new king, or a new villain? Time will tell.'

The Newest Marvel/DC Crossover Will Have Some Fun Team-Ups
In May, Marvel Comics and DC finally confirmed they were doing a new crossover for the first time in over 20 years. At the time, we only knew it'd involve Deadpool and Batman teaming up in a pair of one-shots from Zeb Wells and Greg Capullo (Marvel) and Grant Morrison and Dan Mora (DC). Thanks to the latest Marvel solicitations for the month of August, we know the full scope of the crossover on its side of things. Along with the previously announced duo, Marvel/DC: Deadpool & Batman will feature stories pairing Daredevil and Green Arrow (from Kevin Smith and Andy Kubert), Captain America and Wonder Woman (Chip Zdarsky and Terry Dodson), and superpets Jeff the Shark and Krypto the Superdog (Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru). Each story also gets its own variant cover, and you can see most of them down below. That's a solid lineup of fan favorites and heavy hitters, helped by the fact none of the human characters spent time together in prior crossovers. Marvel and DC have already confirmed there's more hangouts coming: Batman/Deadpool is dropping in November, and there's another set of one-shots coming in 2026. DC's currently mum on whether its one-shot will have extra stories, and both are just as quiet on other heroes waiting in the wings in future installments, or if these are leading to something bigger on the horizon. Superheroes do tend to get caught up in multiverse problems on a frequent basis, after all. Marvel/DC: Deadpool & Batman #1 hits shelves on September 19. Want more io9 news? Jon Bernthal Lands Role in Major Marvel Film Alongside Tom Holland
Jon Bernthal is bringing the Punisher to the big screen—and this time, he's stepping into the world of Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Bernthal has officially joined the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the upcoming installment in Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man franchise. Directed by Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie begins filming in England this summer and is slated for release on July 31, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Plot details remain tightly guarded, but the return of Bernthal's Frank Castle hints at a darker, more street-level tone than recent Spider-Man entries. In the comics, Castle's brutal methods often put him at odds with other heroes, and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that tension may come to life as he crosses paths with Peter Parker. Bernthal first debuted as the Punisher in Netflix's Daredevil before headlining two seasons of The Punisher. He returned in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, and Marvel has confirmed plans to expand his presence with both a second season and a stand-alone R-rated Punisher film, one that Bernthal is co-writing. If The Punisher In ‘Spider-Man' Rumor Was True, Is Savage Hulk Next?
The Punisher/Hulk Back in 2019, it seemed up in the air whether we'd ever see Jon Bernthal's Punisher again, given the cancellation of all Netflix series and the absence of his character going forward. Now, he's everywhere. It's now been confirmed that Bernthal's Punisher will be coming to, of all places, the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth film in the series. It's the unusual blending of the most brutal, R-rated antihero in the MCU with one of its most family-friendly offerings in Spider-Man, raising questions about what's going on here. Yes, the two have paired up many times in the comics, but this is certainly the highest-profile instance of that ever now. There's one aspect of this that's also a bit eyebrow-raising. The rumors that The Punisher was joining Spider-Man in his film is an old one, going all the way back to January. But now in late May, insider Jeff Sneider and John Rocha discussed the report again, saying that trustworthy sources said that the plan was for The Punisher was to join forces with Spider-Man to fight against The Hulk. Spider-Man Yes, The Hulk, former Avenger, and with the last time we saw him being the 'smart' version training his cousin She-Hulk in the ways of Hulkdom, also revealing that he had a son out of nowhere, and his mini-plotline seemed to be leading to some sort of upcoming comic-based Planet Hulk/World War Hulk storyline that never materialized. This is, of course, not that. We have no idea what would have transformed chill Banner Hulk into some sort of monstrous Savage Hulk, another version. This is also in the wake of Captain America: Brave New World having Red Hulk as its antagonist (a film that almost felt like a Hulk sequel that did not contain Hulk). So, if the Punisher part of the rumor is true, the question is whether or not the rest of it is, and Hulk really may be the big bad in Spider-Man 4. The news also comes with the confirmation that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reportedly back as MJ and Ned in some capacity, despite the ending, which hinted the series was moving on from them. The other high-profile casting is Stranger Things' Sadie Sink in an unknown role that most guess is either 'real' MJ, Mary Jane, or perhaps Gwen Stacy. Bernthal went from nowhere in the MCU to one of its most prolific stars. He will be in both seasons of Daredevil: Born Again, he's starring in his own 'special' on Disney Plus later. Now he's in Spider-Man. Tom Holland and Bernthal have a long history. They helped each other audition for their respective roles way back then, and currently, they're starring in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey together. Now, this is going to be one hell of a team-up.
