Marvel Rivals' Galacta's Gift Event Introduces Chrono Shield Cards

Marvel Rivals' Galacta's Gift Event Introduces Chrono Shield Cards

CNET15-05-2025

There has been no shortage of criticism for Marvel Rivals' ranked competitive system since the game's launch in December. Players earn far more rank points from a win than they lose from a loss, leading players with sub-50% win rates to climb the ladder to Diamond or Grandmaster -- and in some people's eyes, the rank distribution has lost much of its meaning and prestige.
Now, Marvel Rivals' latest event risks further muddling the skill divisions of the competitive mode when it launches on May 15. The Galacta's Gift event pass will include eight consumable Chrono Shield Cards, which will prevent players from losing rank points after a competitive match loss -- at least, in lower skill brackets.

The decision to add further safeguards to the Marvel Rivals' ranked experience is puzzling. But it might be another way to retain high player engagement, especially as support players have gone on strike during Season 2.
Steam player counts are a flawed metric to measure a game's success, as player count naturally picks up and drops depending on what is going on in-game, and these charts account only for a subset of PC players among the broad console-inclusive playerbase. Even so, Marvel Rivals reportedly had more players at the end of Season 1 than at the beginning of Season 2. This event could be a quick way to scrape back some of those lapsed players, even if it harms the game's competitive integrity.
Whether the Chrono Shield Cards will be detrimental to the game's competitive environment, they're here to stay. Here's how to get them -- among the other rewards included in the new Galacta's Gift event.

Chrono Shield Cards will help boost Bronze, Silver and Gold players
Completing event challenges during the Galacta's Gift event will level up a free event pass, containing seven tiers with different rewards.
At tiers two and four, players will earn separate bundles of four Chrono Shield Cards. That means you're able to earn eight total Chrono Shield Cards during the item's debut.
Once you activate a Chrono Shield Card, it will remain active until you lose a competitive match. Upon that loss, your Chrono Shield Card will be consumed -- but you won't lose any rank points for that defeat.
You can have up to 20 Chrono Shield Cards at a time, and they are cleared from your inventory at the end of the season. This seems to suggest that the consumables will be plentiful enough for you to stack up on, though we don't yet know how players will be able to earn more outside of this event. We have confirmation from Marvel Rivals' official social media that these items will not be put into paid bundles -- though it's worth maintaining a healthy skepticism about this new change to the ranked points system.
Chrono Shield Cards will not remove the existing Chrono Shield system for Bronze, Silver and Gold players, which charges as they lose ranked games. After enough losses, lower-ranked players gain a Chrono Shield -- protecting them from a rank demotion for a single game. Instead, Chrono Shield Cards are meant to supplement the current system, serving as a way to "allow lower-ranked players to enter ranked mode with even less pressure."
Crucially, the Chrono Shield Cards are not usable by any players in Platinum rank or higher. If you're able to consistently reach these ranks without being demoted, the new consumables are essentially useless clutter in your inventory for the rest of the season.
There's definitely a conversation to be had about why these consumables are appearing in free events -- for myself and many other players, there are now for all intents and purposes empty reward tiers that provide nothing of value. I'm concerned about how fluff prizes could be used to force players to grind longer to get the good stuff in the future, especially since Marvel Rivals events are needlessly complicated as is.
The costume coins are used to unlock premium skins for launch characters -- including Jeff's Incognito Dolphin skin.

How to get a free costume during the Galacta's Gift event
The Chrono Shield Cards are likely going to be the most controversial event rewards in Marvel Rivals to date, but the juiciest prize in the new event is the costume coin on the final tier.
This special currency has only been obtainable during one other event -- the paid Hyper Orange Venom Pick Up Bundle. If you have a costume coin, you're able to trade it in for a premium skin from the costume shop.
Many of these skins cost 1,600 units, the standard premium currency in Marvel Rivals, which is roughly equivalent to $16. Spending $3 to earn the costume coin in the Pick Up Bundle was a very good deal. Being able to earn a costume coin for free during the new event is even better.
There are a number of caveats to the costume coin exchange, however. Only costumes for Season 0 heroes are available -- that means you can get a costume for a hero that was available at launch. That means costumes for the members of the Fantastic Four and Emma Frost will not be available in the costume coin exchange.
Once you have your costume coin, you can trade it in by navigating to the Exchange tab located under the Store menu. I highly recommend you nab the Incognito Dolphin skin for Jeff the Shark, so you can look cute and cuddly while you harass the enemy backline.

Watch These Bitcoin Price Levels Amid Volatile Trading After U.S. Strikes Iran

Bitcoin briefly fell below $99,000 on Sunday to its lowest level in more than six weeks as news that the U.S. had struck Iranian nuclear sites caused investors to reassess their appetite for risky assets. After trending sharply higher between early April and late May, the cryptocurrency has consolidated within a descending channel. Investors should watch crucial support levels on Bitcoin's chart around $100,000 and $92,000, while also monitoring resistance levels near $107,000 and $112, (BTCUSD) briefly fell below $99,000 on Sunday as news that the U.S. had struck Iranian nuclear sites caused investors to reassess their appetite for risky assets. The digital currency moved as low as $98,200 on Sunday afternoon, its lowest level since May 8, amid uncertainty about the geopolitical and economic outlook after the U.S. late Saturday entered a conflict between Israel that had intensified over the past week. In recent trading, bitcoin had rebounded to about $101,200 but was still well down from its high last Monday of near $109,000. Below, we take a closer look at bitcoin's chart and apply technical analysis to identify crucial price levels worth watching out for. After trending sharply higher between early April and late May, bitcoin has consolidated within a descending channel. Over the past week, the cryptocurrency's price has retraced toward the pattern's lower trendline, an area on the chart that closely aligns with the psychological $100,000 level. Moreover, recent selling has coincided with the relative strength index falling below its neutral threshold, signaling weakening price momentum. Let's identify crucial support and resistance levels on Bitcoin's chart. Investors should initially monitor the $100,000 level. This area on the chart is likely to gain significant attention near the descending channel's lower trendline and a range of corresponding trading activity stretching back to last November. A decisive close below this level could see the cryptocurrency's price revisit lower support around $92,000. Investors may seek buying opportunities in this area near a horizontal line that links a series of price action on the chart between November and April. The first resistance level to watch sits around $107,000. The cryptocurrency could face overhead selling pressure in this location near the descending channel's top trendline, which also closely aligns with prominent peaks that formed on the chart in December and January. Finally, buying above this level could see BTC bulls push the price toward $112,000. Investors who have accumulated bitcoin during its recent retracement could decide to lock in profits near last month's high, which also marks the cryptocurrency's all-time high. Bill Skarsgård's ‘Nosferatu' Gets Prime Video Streaming Date

"Nosferatu" partial poster featuring Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård. Nosferatu — the 2024 horror hit starring Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult — is coming soon to Prime Video. Directed by Robert Eggers, Nosferatu opened on Dec. 25, 2024. The official logline for the movie reads, 'A gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.' Skarsgård stars as the vampire Count Orlok in Nosferatu, while Depp plays Ellen Hutter, whom the vampire has been haunting in her dreams. Hoult plays Ellen's husband, Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent who is trying to thwart Orlok from preying on his wife. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney, Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe. Prime Video has announced that Nosferatu will join its streaming video on demand lineup on Friday, June 27. Viewers who don't have Prime Video can get the streaming service as one of the benefits of being an Amazon Prime subscriber for $14.99 or $139 per year. Prime Video-only subscriptions are also available for $8.99 per month. According to streaming tracker When to Stream, only the theatrical version of Nosferatu will be available on Prime Video when the film makes its SVOD debut on the platform on Friday. The extended cut of Nosferatu, which includes four minutes of additional footage is only available on the Peacock streaming service. Robert Eggers Contacted Bill Skarsgård About 'Nosferatu' After Seeing Him In 'IT: Chapter Two' Nosferatu director Robert Eggers said it was because of another horror role — Pennywise the Clown— that led him to pursue Bill Skarsgård to play Count Orlok. However, it wasn't Skarsgård's portrayal as the clown that inspired Eggers. 'It was [Bill's role] as Pennywise, but in IT: Chapter Two, when he played Pennywise as a middle-aged human man instead of a clown,' Eggers said in a Zoom conversation prior to the film's theatrical release. 'It just had a kind of darkness and depth that I really believed. 'So, that's when I emailed or texted Bill and said, 'Let's talk about Orlok.' I really wanted to work with Bill since I met him almost 10 years ago,' the filmmaker added. 'I cast him in The Northman in a supporting role but because of COVID, it didn't happen. He was always on my mind.' Nosferatu received awards season recognition for films released in 2024, largely in the technical categories. The film earned nominations for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design for the 97th Academy Awards; and received nominations in the same four categories and a Best Original Score nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Nosferatu begins streaming on Prime Video on Friday.
