Tengku Zafrul joining PKR may draw wider support for party's reformist agenda, says Youth chief
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — The entry of Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz into Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) could attract support from various quarters to join PKR in building a more progressive, just and inclusive nation, says Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
He said this aligned with PKR's commitment to continue offering politics based on ideas, expertise and integrity.
'His experience is seen as capable of bringing added value to KEADILAN (PKR),' he said in a post on X yesterday.
Muhammad Kamil, who is also the political secretary to the Finance Minister, believes PKR's openness in accepting professional figures proves that the party is constantly evolving as a mature platform and is ready to lead Malaysia's future.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Kamil said the application process to join PKR must follow established procedures, as outlined by the party's secretary-general.
Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an UMNO Supreme Council Member, UMNO Kota Raja Division Chief, and an UMNO member to join PKR.
His decision, however, has drawn various reactions, including from Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, who urged that UMNO's quota of seven ministerial posts be reinstated following Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party.
Ahmad Zahid confirmed today that UMNO executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan had received the official resignation letter from Tengku Zafrul.
However, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh said earlier today that the party had yet to receive any official membership application from Tengku Zafrul. — Bernama

He said Google's RM9.4 billion investment to set up its first data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia could generate up to RM15 billion in long-term economic impact and create 26,500 jobs by 2030. Tengku Zafrul, who is currently on a working visit to the US said he met Google representatives to discuss how the company can continue to drive AI development in Malaysia, strengthen cybersecurity and invest in digital skills. 'The government is committed to providing full support and ensuring a conducive investment climate for high-quality investments,' he said in a Facebook post. Last week, Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to a RM10.5 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia, including the development of hyperscale data centres in the Klang Valley. The announcement came in the wake of a 24% tariff on Malaysian goods announced by the US in April, before a 90-day pause was declared a week later.

222 Johor projects worth RM10b yet to start, says MB
JOHOR BARU: Johor has 222 projects scheduled between 2016 and 2024 that have yet to commence. The projects, worth around RM10 billion, include various public facilities such as roads, mosques, hospitals and clinics, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. "When I ask in meetings, they say, 'Don't worry, we'll check with the respective ministries, we'll get it approved.' "All these projects are for the people, but they still haven't started," he said in his speech at the 2025 Umno Tebrau division delegates' meeting here on Saturday. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno liaison chairman, said Umno leaders in the state risk incurring public anger if the projects are not implemented. "Council members, village heads, community leaders – don't just attend meetings to look good. "If the projects don't go through, if the allocations are not used properly and appropriately, let me ask – who will the people be angry with? "At the agency? Or at the Umno leaders? They will be angry with us. That's why we need to go down to the ground and inspect things ourselves," he said. The Machap assemblyman said the federal government should place its trust in the state leadership to approve and implement projects in Johor. He suggested that the federal government initiate a pilot programme with Johor to evaluate the proposal's effectiveness. "If you don't want to implement it nationwide, make Johor the pilot state. "Insya-Allah, the Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders in Johor can be trusted and will shoulder these responsibilities for religion, race and homeland," he said. Onn Hafiz expressed disappointment at the lack of implementation. "I don't like making people angry. "But when it comes to the welfare of the people, don't test me. I will fight all the way for the people – for the people of Johor. That is the spirit of Johor Umno. "What we say is not just rhetoric. If we say it, Insya-Allah, we will deliver it," he said. Also present at the event were Johor Umno liaison deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Johor Umno secretary Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman, who is also Tebrau Umno division chief.

It's WhatsApp to the rescue for stranded hikers

(JPBM pic) BUKIT MERTAJAM : Two youngsters who got lost while hiking in the Cherok Tok Kun forest near here were swiftly rescued by the fire brigade, thanks to a handy smartphone. State fire and rescue assistant director John Sagun Francis said the two 18-year-olds sent their location via WhatsApp to his department at 1.16pm. 'A team from the Bukit Mertajam fire and rescue station was deployed to the location.' The state recreational forest is home to Bukit Cherok Tok Kun and Penang's largest tree, with its enormous buttress roots. Five personnel, aided by members of the public, were involved in the search and rescue operation. He said the two hikers were found and brought down safely three hours later.
