Tengku Zafrul sees Google's investment driving Malaysia's AI economy

Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who is on a working visit to the US, says he met Google representatives in Washington.
PETALING JAYA : Google's investment in Malaysia is expected to continue driving the country's artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing economy, according to investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.
He said Google's RM9.4 billion investment to set up its first data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia could generate up to RM15 billion in long-term economic impact and create 26,500 jobs by 2030.
Tengku Zafrul, who is currently on a working visit to the US said he met Google representatives to discuss how the company can continue to drive AI development in Malaysia, strengthen cybersecurity and invest in digital skills.
'The government is committed to providing full support and ensuring a conducive investment climate for high-quality investments,' he said in a Facebook post.
Last week, Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to a RM10.5 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia, including the development of hyperscale data centres in the Klang Valley. The announcement came in the wake of a 24% tariff on Malaysian goods announced by the US in April, before a 90-day pause was declared a week later.

Perlis MB fails to oust Arau PAS chief as allies suffer major defeats in state party polls

KANGAR, June 22 – Allies of Perlis Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli have reportedly suffered a series of defeats in PAS' party elections in the Arau division, including Shukri himself who failed to unseat the incumbent division chief. Malaysiakini reported that Shukri lost his bid for the division chief post to Solahhudin Azmi, the current officeholder and Perlis PAS election director. 'Shukri failed to win the post of Arau PAS division chief, losing to Solahhudin Azmi,' the report quoted an anonymous party source. Razali Saad, another ally of Shukri and a Perlis state executive councillor, also reportedly lost his position as division vice-chief to Nur Yusairy Mansor. Meanwhile, Perlis state assembly speaker Russele Eizan was unseated as division deputy chief by Ridzuan Hashim, a rank-and-file member. Russele also holds the role of Perlis Perikatan Nasional vice-chairman II, but his alignment with Shukri remains unclear. These losses come amid previous controversies involving Shukri's family, notably his son Syafeeq who was charged last year with submitting a false claim. In May 2024, Syafeeq pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur to a charge of submitting a false claim amounting to RM19,505.10. He was charged with submitting a document, 'Pesanan Kerajaan (Bekalan/Perkhidmatan) Kerajaan Negeri Perlis', containing a false claim to Nurul Nabilah Mohd Sukri, an Administrative Assistant at the District Administration Division, Perlis State Secretary's Office, on February 19 this year with an intent to deceive the latter. The charge was framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 (Act 694), punished under Section 24(2) of the same law, which provides imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher upon conviction.

Onn Hafiz urges Putrajaya to let Johor lead decentralised project approvals amid RM10b worth of stalled developments

JOHOR BARU, June 22 – Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has reportedly urged federal authorities to entrust state leaders with the authority to approve and implement development projects more efficiently, amid hundreds of stalled construction plans in Johor. Berita Harian quoted the Johor menteri besar proposing that his state be allowed to pioneer a decentralised model for project implementation, saying this could improve delivery and accountability. 'If they're not ready to implement this nationwide, let Johor be the pioneer,' he was quoted saying. 'God willing, Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders in Johor will uphold their responsibilities with integrity, for the sake of religion, race and country.' He said a total of 222 development projects worth an estimated RM10 billion in Johor, scheduled between 2016 and last year, have yet to begin. Onn Hafiz said the stalled projects, which include roads, mosques, hospitals and health clinics, were intended to benefit the public but remain unimplemented. 'When I asked about it in meetings, they told me not to worry, that they would check with the respective ministries and the projects would be approved. All these projects are meant for the people, and yet, to this day, not a single one has started,' he said. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno chief, warned that party leaders would be blamed by the public if the projects continue to stall. 'Councillors, village heads, community leaders — don't just attend meetings for show. If these projects are not moving, if the allocations are not properly utilised, let me ask you — who will the people be angry with? 'The agencies or the Umno leaders? They'll be angry with us. That's why we need to get on the ground and check,' he said. Onn Hafiz also voiced frustration over the persistent delays and the impact on public welfare. 'I don't like reprimanding others, but when it affects the well-being of the people, do not test my resolve. I will fight wholeheartedly for the people and the state of Johor — that's the spirit of Johor Umno,' he said.

Socso urges job seekers to look beyond home states for better job opportunities

KANGAR, June 22 — Job seekers have been urged to be more open to challenges, by considering employment opportunities beyond their home states, rather than limiting themselves to local job options. The Social Security Organisation's (Socso) Employment Insurance System (SIP) Office head, Datuk Asri Ab Rahman, said that job seekers should adopt a more flexible mindset, and be willing to accept suitable job offers, even if they are located in other states, as long as the positions offer long-term prospects and stability. 'Sometimes, job mismatches occur, not due to a lack of opportunities, but because candidates are unwilling to relocate. However, such cases are relatively isolated and tend to occur only in specific states,' he told reporters after attending the opening ceremony of the MYFutureJobs Career, Education & Entrepreneurship Carnival — Perlis 2025, here yesterday. The two-day career carnival, which began yesterday, was launched by Perlis State Secretary Datuk Rahimi Ismail. Meanwhile, Socso, in a statement, said that a total of 74,576 job seekers nationwide have successfully secured employment through placement programmes conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders. 'This achievement not only demonstrates the commitment of all involved in enhancing employment opportunities, but also offers new hope for job seekers to build a better future, through ongoing collaborative efforts,' it said. It also noted that between January and June 13, Perlis Socso organised 33 open interview programmes, resulting in 522 individuals successfully securing new employment. It added that a total of 14 individuals received Socso benefits, amounting to RM239,732.90, in conjunction with the carnival's opening ceremony yesterday. The benefits were provided under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) and the Self-Employed Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789), covering various categories, including temporary disability benefit, permanent disability benefit, Survivors' Pension, and Invalidity Pension. — Bernama
