Government to consider public feedback in SST review

IPOH: The government will continue to consider feedback from various stakeholders in its review of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) rates and the expansion of its scope, according to political secretary to the Finance Minister Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim. He assured the public that the expanded scope of the tax would not apply to all goods, but only to specific segments previously announced by the government. 'Not all goods are subject to the expanded SST. For example, local products that are not manufactured or do not undergo industrial processing will remain zero-rated under the SST,' he explained. 'We acknowledge there will be concerns and complaints, but in implementing any policy, if there are elements that warrant reconsideration, I don't believe the government would hesitate to review them,' he added. He made these remarks during a Ziarah MADANI visit to the home of Sergeant Mazlan Mat, 50, a member of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) who was involved in a fatal accident in Teluk Intan on May 13 here today. On June 9, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan announced that the government will carry out a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and expand the scope of the Service Tax, effective July 1, in line with the 2025 Budget announcement made last October. According to a Finance Ministry statement, the measure aims to strengthen the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base, without placing an undue burden on the general public. Muhammad Kamil noted that public concern over tax policy changes is not uncommon, citing similar reactions during the recent rollout of targeted diesel subsidy rationalisation. 'At first, many questioned the diesel subsidy policy, but eventually recognised the benefits it delivered,' he said. Meanwhile, addressing the vacancy in the Economy Minister post following Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's resignation, Muhammad Kamil said the decision rests solely with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim discretion. 'We leave it to the Prime Minister's judgment and wisdom to decide who is best suited to shoulder the responsibility at this time,' he said.

SST expansion ‘not divine law', govt willing to fine-tune policy, says Anwar's political secretary

IPOH, June 17 — The expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) will proceed on July 1 as planned, but the government is open to revisiting the policy if necessary, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar's political secretary said today. Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim acknowledged growing public concern over the upcoming tax changes and assured that feedback would be taken seriously. 'Of course, there are bound to be concerns or dissatisfaction whenever a new policy is implemented. This is normal,' he told reporters here. 'This might not be the perfect policy. But if there are segments or sectors that require reconsideration, I believe the government will look into those concerns seriously. 'This is not divine law, it's human legislation. So, there's no issue if adjustments or improvements are needed. What's important is that the majority of the people are not burdened by this expansion,' he added. Muhammad Kamil also gave an assurance that the SST expansion will not affect essential goods and is aimed at strengthening Malaysia's fiscal base. 'Malaysia has one of the lowest tax bases in the region, and the move to widen the SST coverage is aimed at enhancing fiscal sustainability without causing hardship to the public,' he said. He was speaking after visiting a victim of last month's FRU truck crash in Taman Desa Tambun here. His remarks came in response to concerns raised by six major business groups, which urged the government to delay the tax hike. The groups warned the broader SST scope – including 8 per cent tax on commercial rental and leasing – could hurt investment, raise costs and dampen consumer sentiment amid economic headwinds.

Tengku Zafrul joining PKR may draw wider support for party's reformist agenda, says Youth chief

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — The entry of Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz into Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) could attract support from various quarters to join PKR in building a more progressive, just and inclusive nation, says Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim. He said this aligned with PKR's commitment to continue offering politics based on ideas, expertise and integrity. 'His experience is seen as capable of bringing added value to KEADILAN (PKR),' he said in a post on X yesterday. Muhammad Kamil, who is also the political secretary to the Finance Minister, believes PKR's openness in accepting professional figures proves that the party is constantly evolving as a mature platform and is ready to lead Malaysia's future. Meanwhile, Muhammad Kamil said the application process to join PKR must follow established procedures, as outlined by the party's secretary-general. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an UMNO Supreme Council Member, UMNO Kota Raja Division Chief, and an UMNO member to join PKR. His decision, however, has drawn various reactions, including from Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, who urged that UMNO's quota of seven ministerial posts be reinstated following Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party. Ahmad Zahid confirmed today that UMNO executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan had received the official resignation letter from Tengku Zafrul. However, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh said earlier today that the party had yet to receive any official membership application from Tengku Zafrul. — Bernama

PKR Youth chief calls for clear nepotism definition, insists Nurul Izzah earned post through votes rather than Anwar's influence

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 – PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim has urged the party to clarify the meaning of nepotism, after Nurul Izzah Anwar's victory in the party's recent internal election. Kamil, who also serves as Anwar's political secretary in the Finance Ministry, said if family ties alone constituted nepotism, then many political parties would be equally guilty, not just PKR. 'All parties, without exception, have this. So, it's unfair to label only this case as nepotism while ignoring others. This is a malicious propaganda campaign meant to smear PKR,' he was quoted saying by Malaysiakini. 'The continuous nepotism attacks against PKR are mischievous attempts by political rivals, especially the opposition, to create negative perceptions.' Kamil said that true nepotism involves misuse of power for personal gain, such as awarding contracts or posts to relatives or cronies, which was not the case here. He stressed that Nurul Izzah was chosen by party members through an open election, not installed by Anwar or the party leadership, highlighting her long record of activism and public service. 'Nurul Izzah has been active from the start. She fought for justice, ran in elections, received public support, became an MP, and was elected and supported by party members, all through democratic processes,' he told the news outfit. Nurul Izzah recently won the deputy president post, defeating incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. Her father, Anwar, is the party president. 'I think the nepotism issue is outdated. It was played decades ago, then faded,' he reportedly said. 'Now with this election, it's being raised again. This is nothing more than an attempt to create a negative perception among the public.'
