MOVIE REVIEW: We decide if AI-themed sci-fi-thriller 'Renner' is worth switching on
Dull then mean-spirited, you'll want to pull the plug long before the end credits roll.
Sci-fi-thriller Renner sees the titular computer genius (Frankie Muniz) create AI life coach Salenus (voiced by Marcia Gay Harden) to help him find love.
But when next-door neighbour Jamie (Violett Beane) comes into his well-ordered life, things quickly begin to unravel.
Renner is a strange film that takes the topical AI technology and doesn't do much with it until the latter stages.
Salenus is a giant glass eye who turns out to be slightly manipulative but a long way off M3GAN or Skynet.
Most of the runtime in Robert Rippberger's ( Those Who Walk Away) flick is full of awkward conversations and, apart from brief ventures into a corridor, his characters never leave their apartments.
There is actually a five-minute story about the board game Monopoly - yes, really.
The nervy Renner has OCD and is a germophobe and Muniz proves capable of portraying this nebbish side but the incredibly forced angry rants that burst from his mouth at times just don't suit the former Malcolm in the Middle.
Beane was better in Drop and Truth or Dare, however, she deals with Jamie's character shifts very capably.
Rippberger's use of UV light in certain scenes feels like a feeble effort to make the movie look futuristic - truthfully it could be set any time from the past few years.
Shots of Renner's morning routine become supremely repetitive and as the film went on it entered my mind it would have worked better as a 40-minute Twilight Zone episode.
The final third 'reveal' is less surprising than another Love Island couple break-up.
Blood randomly starts flowing thick and fast which really jars with everything we've previously watched.
Dull and then mean-spirited, you'll want to pull the plug on Renner and its average AI long before the end credits roll.

Horror fans 'seriously creeped out' as unhinged gets Channel 4 premiere
It can be quite a challenging task trying to remember viral dance routines from TikTok. With every passing week, it feels like there's a new song and matching movement to learn. So, if you're struggling to remember why Universal Pictures' M3GAN sent the internet into a frenzy in 2022, then fear not—Channel 4 has you covered. Airing on Saturday night for the enjoyment of horror fans, this twisted film about a seemingly sweet AI doll became an instant success three years ago after it capitalised on viral attention. The meme in question was created after fans tried to recreate the doll's eerie dance routine. Writing on X tonight as the sci-fi flick launched on the small screen at 10pm, @WestBromEL said: 'I'm watching M3GAN on @Channel4, it's seriously creepy.' @Mixer4everx added: 'Watching m3gan on channel 4. I love this movie.' Written by Akela Cooper, the film follows an artificially intelligent doll who develops self-awareness and becomes hostile toward anyone who comes between her and her human companion. Designed by Gemma, who is played by Get Out's Allison Williams, M3GAN goes from simply being able to listen, watch, and learn to being a full-blown killing machine. In the first week it was released, the somewhat comedic horror grossed nearly £24.9million, well above its predictions of £14million. Since, M3GAN has acquired an impressive 93% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, with thousands flooding the site with glowing reviews. And for those keen for more, fear not, as last month, it was revealed that a sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is going to be released soon. The plot will follow M3GAN as she is being rebuilt to combat a humanoid military robot created using M3GAN's technology that is attempting an AI takeover. Its cast will star Williams once more, as well as Jenna Davis, Ivanna Sakhno, and Violet McGraw, hitting cinemas on June 27. Additionally, it has also previously been announced that M3GAN will be getting a further spin-off, but with a more sensual twist. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are joining forces for the third M3GAN instalment, a film that 'expands the universe' and is described as an 'erotic thriller'. A synopsis for the upcoming film reads: 'A man acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate. 'The film is in the tradition of the 90s domestic thrillers but with a modern, technological twist.' Set to be released on January 2, 2026, it will be directed by Kate Dolan, famed for the chilling Irish folk tale You Are Not My Mother. This comes after M3GAN star Williams spoke to the Metro about the film and her fear of scary movies, despite garnering status as a Scream Queen herself. More Trending She said: 'The truth is I have a really low tolerance for horror, meaning when I watch a scary movie, it affects my sleep for a while. 'For real. So some of my favourites are my favourites, but they're stuck in time because I've been too scared to watch them again.' View More » M3GAN is available to watch on Channel 4. Got a story? The Breaking Bad star played frazzled dad Hal in the 2000s show with Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield, Frankie Muniz and Erik playing his four sons and they are all returning for a revival of the series with the exception of Erik - who played youngest boy Dewey. Now Bryan has revealed the former child star, who is now 33, won't be returning because he's busy with his studies and hasn't acted since he was a child. During an appearance on the 'Fly on the Wall' podcast, Bryan explained: "I talked to Erik and I said: 'Hey, we got the show! It's gonna come back.' "He goes: 'Oh, that's fantastic!' And I go: 'Yeah, so we're looking forward to having you back.' He goes: 'Oh, no, no, I don't want to do it. But it's fantastic that you are'." He added of Erik's decision: "He's actually going to Harvard,. He's really, really smart, and I think he's getting his master's at Harvard right now. He said: 'Oh God, no, I haven't acted since I was nine or something. So I'm not into it'." The role of Dewey has been recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over from Erik. Article continues below Bryan went on to admit it's surreal to see his young co-stars grow up as they are now all around the same age he was when he started working on Malcolm in the Middle. He addeD: "It's amazing how these boys - who were my boys on that show - are now around the same age I was when we first started. They've got children of their own." The show originally ran from 2000 until 2006 and Bryan previously revealed he's relished the experience of playing Hal once again. He told People: "Slipping back into that character of Hal for me was so rewarding - I missed him. "It's been almost 20 years since we said goodbye. And he's a sweet, lovable man. He's really a lovable guy, and it was fun to see all my whole family back together. It was great." He went on to explain how his on-screen costume has helped him to get back into character. Article continues below Bryan explained: "It's a short-sleeve shirt that Hal would wear, a patterned short-sleeve shirt that screams out he's not going anywhere."
